CHAPTER 14 The Enemy Who Claimed He Saved the Family

Ryan Whitmore stared into the darkness.
For a few seconds, his mind refused to accept what he was seeing.
The figure slowly stepped forward.
The dim light revealed an older man.
Gray hair.
A perfectly tailored suit.
A calm expression that looked almost friendly.
Almost.
Ryan had seen that face before.
In old photographs.
In documents.
In the evidence that had destroyed everything he believed about his family.
Victor Hale.
The man who had been hiding behind the Whitmore family for decades.
The man connected to his father's final investigation.
The man Nathan said had manipulated Evelyn.
Ryan's body tensed.
Nathan immediately stepped in front of him.
"Stay away from him."
Victor smiled.
A calm, almost disappointed smile.
"Still protecting him."
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
"After everything you did?"
Victor looked at Ryan.
"Your brother always had a dramatic imagination."
Ryan felt anger rising.
"Do not talk about him like you know him."
Victor looked amused.
"But I do know him."
He glanced at Nathan.
"I knew him before you did."
The words confused Ryan.
"What does that mean?"
Victor walked closer.
"I was there when your family began falling apart."
Nathan's voice became sharp.
"You destroyed it."
Victor looked at him.
"No."
He shook his head.
"Your family destroyed itself."
Ryan stepped forward.
"You were involved with my mother."
Victor smiled.
"That depends on what you mean by involved."
"You manipulated her."
Victor laughed softly.
"Everyone says that."
"Nobody asks why she listened."
Ryan froze.
Because that was the same argument Evelyn always used.
The idea that she had reasons.
That she was pushed.
That someone else was responsible.
Victor continued.
"Your mother wanted control."
"I simply understood her."
Ryan's expression hardened.
"Understanding someone doesn't mean using them."
Victor looked at him.
"Maybe."
"But sometimes people like Evelyn don't need to be controlled."
"They need permission."
The words were disturbing.
Because they sounded true.
Evelyn had not been forced into every decision.
She had chosen.
But someone had encouraged the worst parts of her.
Ryan looked at Nathan.
"You knew he would come."
Nathan shook his head.
"No."
Victor smiled.
"He knew I would eventually."
Ryan looked back at Victor.
"What do you want?"
Victor looked around the warehouse.
"Actually, Ryan..."
"I want the same thing your father wanted."
Ryan narrowed his eyes.
"The truth."
Victor nodded.
"The complete truth."
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the one thing everyone claimed to want.
The truth.
But every person seemed to have a different version.
Ryan crossed his arms.
"Then tell me."
Victor smiled.
"You really think it is that simple?"
"Yes."
"No."
Victor looked toward Nathan.
"Because your brother has already lied to you."
Nathan's expression changed.
Ryan turned.
"Nathan?"
Victor continued.
"He told you he was abandoned."
"He told you your mother erased him."
"That part is true."
Ryan looked at Victor.
"Then what are you saying?"
Victor stepped closer.
"I'm saying Nathan is not telling you why."
The warehouse became silent.
Ryan looked at his brother.
"Nathan."
Nathan didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Ryan felt something break.
Not because he believed Victor.
Because he was tired of discovering that everyone had hidden something.
"Explain."
Nathan looked down.
"I was waiting for the right moment."
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"Again?"
His voice echoed.
"Everyone says that."
Nathan looked at him.
"I didn't tell you because I was ashamed."
"Of what?"
Nathan took a breath.
"Because I wasn't just a witness."
Ryan waited.
Nathan finally said:
"I was part of it."
The words hit like a punch.
Ryan stared.
"What?"
Nathan looked devastated.
"When I was younger..."
"I made a mistake."
Victor smiled slightly.
"There it is."
Nathan ignored him.
"I trusted the wrong people."
Ryan stepped closer.
"What mistake?"
Nathan looked at him.
"I gave Victor information."
Silence.
Ryan felt his chest tighten.
"What information?"
Nathan looked away.
"About your father."
Maya's voice echoed in Ryan's mind.
Trust no one.
Ryan stared at Nathan.
"You helped him?"
Nathan immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Not like that."
"Then how?"
Nathan's eyes filled with regret.
"I thought I was protecting my family."
Ryan closed his eyes.
The same words.
Again.
Protection.
Everyone used it.
Everyone hid behind it.
Nathan continued.
"I was young."
"I didn't understand what Victor wanted."
"What did you tell him?"
Nathan swallowed.
"I told him when my father planned to expose the company."
Ryan felt sick.
"So you warned him."
Nathan nodded.
"Yes."
A painful silence followed.
Then Ryan asked the question he didn't want to ask.
"Did you cause my father's death?"
Nathan looked horrified.
"No."
His answer came immediately.
"No."
Victor interrupted.
"Your brother didn't kill Thomas."
Ryan looked at him.
"Then who did?"
Victor's smile disappeared.
For the first time...
He looked serious.
"Your mother knows."
Ryan turned toward the warehouse entrance.
Because that answer created another question.
Where was Evelyn?
And why had she disappeared?
Victor continued.
"Your mother spent twenty years protecting herself."
"She lied."
"She manipulated."
"But she never told the entire story."
Ryan looked at him.
"And you will?"
Victor nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Victor smiled.
"Because I want something."
Ryan knew it.
There was always a price.
"What?"
Victor looked directly at him.
"The Whitmore company."
Ryan stared.
"There it is."
Victor smiled.
"I don't pretend."
"Unlike your family."
Ryan looked at Nathan.
Then back at Victor.
"You expect me to trust you?"
"No."
Victor answered.
"I expect you to investigate."
The honesty surprised Ryan.
Victor continued.
"Find out what happened that night."
"Then decide who deserves your anger."
Ryan didn't move.
Because despite everything...
One thing was becoming clear.
Victor Hale was dangerous.
But he was also telling them things nobody else wanted revealed.
Victor turned to leave.
Before walking away, he stopped.
"Ryan."
"What?"
"Your mother didn't hide your brother because she hated him."
Ryan looked at him.
"Then why?"
Victor answered quietly.
"Because Nathan was the only person who knew she was capable of destroying everything."
Then Victor disappeared into the darkness.
Ryan stood there.
His entire life had become a question.
His mother.
His brother.
His father's death.
Everyone had played a role.
Everyone had a secret.
But one truth remained.
Someone had caused the collapse of the Whitmore family.
And now Ryan was closer than ever to finding out who.
When he returned home that night...
The first thing he noticed was the open front door.
His heart stopped.
"Maya."
No answer.
He rushed inside.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Then he saw something on the floor.
A small piece of paper.
Written in a familiar handwriting.
Evelyn's handwriting.
Only three words.
"She knows everything."
Ryan felt cold.
Because the question was no longer who knew the truth.
May you like
The question was...
What had happened to Maya?
