CHAPTER 11 The Person Living Inside the Secret

CHAPTER 11 The Person Living Inside the Secret

Ryan Whitmore stood completely still after the phone call ended.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Every sound suddenly seemed louder.

The ticking clock.

The quiet hum of the refrigerator.

Oliver's soft breathing from upstairs.

Everything reminded him of one terrifying possibility.

Someone inside his house knew the truth.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been waiting.

Maya noticed the change in his expression.

"Ryan?"

He looked at her.

"It was Claire."

Maya immediately stood.

"What did she say?"

Ryan looked toward the hallway.

"She said my mother isn't the only person we need to fear."

Maya's face changed.

"What does that mean?"

Ryan didn't answer.

Because deep down...

He already knew.

The Whitmore family had been hiding secrets for decades.

And secrets required people willing to protect them.

Evelyn had been exposed.

But maybe she wasn't the only one involved.

Ryan walked toward the stairs.

Maya followed.

"Where are you going?"

"To check something."

"Ryan."

He stopped.

Maya looked at him.

"You don't have to carry this alone."

For years, Ryan had tried to solve every problem by himself.

He believed protecting people meant keeping his pain hidden.

But that was exactly how Evelyn controlled everything.

Through silence.

Through fear.

Ryan nodded.

"You're right."

He reached for her hand.

"We do this together."

They walked upstairs.

The house looked peaceful.

Almost normal.

That was what made it worse.

Because Ryan now understood something.

Danger didn't always look dangerous.

Sometimes it smiled at you.

Sometimes it brought you dinner.

Sometimes it called itself family.

They entered the hallway.

Ryan looked toward the guest room.

Then toward his mother's room.

Evelyn had stayed in the house after the police investigation because she had nowhere else to go.

At least...

That was what she said.

Ryan stopped outside her door.

Maya whispered:

"Do you think she knows?"

Ryan looked at the door.

"I don't know anymore."

That was the hardest part.

Not knowing who to trust.

Ryan knocked.

No answer.

He opened the door slowly.

The room was empty.

The bed was untouched.

The window was open.

A cold breeze moved through the room.

"She's gone."

Maya looked around.

"Maybe she left."

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

Something caught his attention.

On the desk.

A piece of paper.

He picked it up.

Only three words were written.

"Ask your brother."

Ryan froze.

Maya looked confused.

"Your brother?"

Ryan slowly lowered the paper.

"I don't have a brother."

The room became silent.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

You do.

Ryan stared at the screen.

His heart began racing.

Another message appeared.

Your mother made sure you forgot.

Maya stepped closer.

"What is happening?"

Ryan didn't know.

And that terrified him.

Because he had spent the last twenty-four hours discovering secrets.

But this was different.

This wasn't about documents.

This wasn't about money.

This was about his identity.

"Call the number."

Maya said.

Ryan pressed the call button.

It rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

A man's voice.

"Ryan."

Ryan froze.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

Then:

"My name is Nathan."

Ryan frowned.

"How do I know you?"

The voice became quiet.

"Because I know you."

Ryan felt a chill.

"Who are you?"

The answer came slowly.

"I am your brother."

Ryan couldn't speak.

The world around him seemed to stop.

"No."

Nathan sighed.

"I knew you would say that."

"Because that's what Mom wanted."

Ryan's grip tightened around the phone.

"Don't call her that."

A painful laugh came from the other end.

"You still protect her."

Ryan said nothing.

Because he didn't know what to say.

Nathan continued.

"She told you I didn't exist, didn't she?"

Ryan looked at Maya.

Maya looked just as shocked.

"What are you talking about?"

Nathan's voice became emotional.

"Before you were born, my mother had another child."

Ryan's heart raced.

"Who?"

Silence.

Then Nathan answered:

"Me."

Ryan sat down on the edge of the bed.

His entire life was changing again.

Another secret.

Another person erased from the family story.

"Why would she hide you?"

Nathan didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because I knew what she did."

Ryan felt cold.

"What did she do?"

Nathan's voice became lower.

"Your father didn't discover her first secret."

"He discovered mine."

Ryan looked at Maya.

"What does that mean?"

Nathan continued.

"I was the reason your father started investigating."

Ryan couldn't breathe.

"What?"

"I saw something when I was younger."

"What?"

"My mother meeting someone."

"Someone from the company."

Ryan closed his eyes.

Another missing piece.

Another hidden story.

"Who?"

Nathan whispered a name.

A name Ryan had heard before.

A name connected to his father's death.

"Daniel Cross."

Ryan stood immediately.

"No."

Nathan's voice was calm.

"Yes."

Ryan's mind raced.

Daniel had helped them.

Daniel had provided evidence.

Daniel had led them toward the truth.

But now...

Could he have been part of the lie?

Maya looked at Ryan.

"What happened?"

Ryan ended the call.

He didn't know what to believe anymore.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had evidence.

Everyone claimed to be telling the truth.

But someone was lying.

Someone had been lying for twenty years.

The next morning, Ryan met Nathan.

The man standing in front of him looked strangely familiar.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

A face that carried pieces of their father.

Nathan looked at Ryan.

"I never wanted to come back."

Ryan studied him.

"Why now?"

Nathan looked toward the Whitmore mansion.

"Because Mom is losing control."

Ryan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Nathan looked at him seriously.

"It means she is desperate."

"And desperate people reveal everything."

Ryan crossed his arms.

"Tell me the truth."

Nathan nodded.

"I will."

A pause.

"But first..."

He looked directly at Ryan.

"You need to know something about the night your father died."

Ryan waited.

Nathan spoke quietly.

"I was there."

Ryan froze.

"You were there?"

Nathan nodded.

"And I saw who entered the room after your father collapsed."

Ryan's heart stopped.

"Who?"

Nathan looked at him.

And the answer destroyed the last bit of certainty Ryan had left.

"It was not Mom."

A long silence followed.

"Then who was it?"

Nathan looked toward the Whitmore house.

"The person who has been pretending to help you this entire time."

Ryan felt cold.

Because only one person matched that description.

The person who brought them evidence.

The person who guided their investigation.

The person they trusted.

Daniel Cross.

And suddenly...

May you like

The man who helped uncover the truth...

became the person they needed to investigate.
