CHAPTER 13 The Brother Who Came Back From the Shadows

CHAPTER 13 The Brother Who Came Back From the Shadows

Ryan Whitmore arrived at the abandoned warehouse twenty minutes earlier than planned.

He didn't know why he came alone.

Every instinct told him not to.

After everything he had learned, trusting anyone felt impossible.

But Nathan was different.

Not because Ryan trusted him.

Because Nathan was the one person who had the answers Ryan needed.

A brother he never knew existed.

A man who claimed he had witnessed the truth.

A man who was now connected to the night their father died.

The warehouse was nearly empty.

Broken windows.

Dust-covered floors.

Old equipment abandoned in the corners.

It felt like a place where secrets belonged.

Ryan stood in the center of the building.

Waiting.

Then he heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Nathan appeared from the darkness.

For a moment, Ryan simply stared at him.

Because the resemblance was impossible to ignore.

The same eyes as Thomas Whitmore.

The same serious expression.

The same way of standing.

It felt like looking at a piece of his father that had been hidden away.

Nathan stopped several feet away.

"You came."

Ryan crossed his arms.

"You knew I would."

Nathan nodded.

"Yes."

"Because you know me?"

Nathan looked down.

"Because I know what it feels like to want the truth."

Ryan studied him.

"Tell me everything."

Nathan took a deep breath.

"Before I do..."

He looked around.

"We need to leave after this conversation."

Ryan frowned.

"Why?"

Nathan looked at him.

"Because someone has been following me."

Ryan immediately became alert.

"Who?"

Nathan didn't answer.

That worried him more.

"Nathan."

The older man looked at him.

"I don't know."

Ryan stared.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Nathan sighed.

"I know how it sounds."

"It sounds like everyone else."

Ryan's voice became sharper.

"Everyone says they are protecting me."

"Everyone has a reason for hiding things."

Nathan nodded.

"You are right."

The agreement surprised Ryan.

Nathan continued.

"And that is why I came back."

"Because you deserve the truth."

Ryan waited.

Nathan looked toward the broken window.

"When I was seven years old, my mother sent me away."

Ryan froze.

"She sent you away?"

Nathan nodded.

"She told everyone I was sick."

"She told people I needed special care."

"But the truth was..."

Nathan swallowed.

"She didn't want me around."

Ryan felt anger rising.

"Why?"

"Because I knew too much."

Nathan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out an old notebook.

"This belonged to my father."

Ryan recognized it immediately.

The handwriting.

The style.

Thomas Whitmore.

Nathan handed it to him.

"He gave this to me before he died."

Ryan looked shocked.

"Why would he give it to you?"

Nathan looked away.

"Because I was the first person he trusted with the truth."

Ryan opened the notebook.

Inside were pages of notes.

Dates.

Names.

Financial records.

And one sentence circled repeatedly.

"Evelyn is not acting alone."

Ryan looked up.

"Nathan..."

"I know."

Nathan nodded.

"She wasn't the only one."

Ryan continued reading.

Then he found something.

A name.

Victor Hale.

The same name Daniel mentioned.

Ryan's expression changed.

"You knew about him."

Nathan nodded.

"My father discovered him."

"Who is he?"

Nathan looked serious.

"The man who controlled my mother."

Ryan frowned.

"Controlled?"

Nathan nodded.

"Evelyn always wanted control."

"But Victor knew how to give her what she wanted."

"What?"

"Power."

Ryan looked at the notebook again.

Nathan continued.

"Victor convinced her that the Whitmore family belonged to her."

"That everyone needed her."

"That anyone who challenged her was an enemy."

Ryan shook his head.

"Why?"

Nathan looked at him.

"Because Victor needed someone inside the family."

The words made everything colder.

Ryan slowly understood.

"Evelyn wasn't using Victor."

Nathan nodded.

"She thought she was."

"But he was using her."

Exactly.

The pattern.

Everyone believing they were in control.

Everyone actually being controlled by someone else.

Ryan looked up.

"What happened the night my father died?"

Nathan became quiet.

"I saw Victor."

Ryan froze.

"You saw him?"

Nathan nodded.

"He came to the house."

"When?"

"Before your father collapsed."

Ryan's heart raced.

"What did he do?"

Nathan looked away.

"I don't know."

"Then why are you sure he was involved?"

Nathan hesitated.

Then he answered:

"Because I heard them arguing."

Ryan waited.

"My father said he was going to expose everything."

"And Victor said..."

Nathan stopped.

"What?"

Nathan looked directly at Ryan.

"He said he would make sure nobody believed Thomas."

Ryan felt a chill.

Because those words sounded familiar.

The same strategy.

The same method.

Destroy the person's reputation.

Make them look unstable.

Make the truth impossible to believe.

The same thing Evelyn did to Maya.

Nathan continued.

"After that night, Mom told everyone Dad died naturally."

"She told me to forget what I saw."

Ryan stared.

"And you did?"

Nathan's face changed.

"No."

A long pause.

"I tried to tell someone."

"Who?"

Nathan looked down.

"Claire."

Ryan froze.

"My aunt?"

"Yes."

"She believed me."

"Then why didn't she say anything?"

Nathan looked at him.

"Because Victor threatened her."

Ryan felt anger.

"How?"

Nathan looked away.

"He threatened you."

Ryan stopped.

"Me?"

Nathan nodded.

"He told Claire that if she spoke, you would lose everything."

Ryan closed his eyes.

All these years.

People had been protecting him.

But every act of protection had created another layer of lies.

He opened his eyes.

"What happened to you after that?"

Nathan smiled sadly.

"Mom erased me."

Ryan looked at him.

"She told everyone I didn't exist."

"She changed records."

"She moved me away."

"She built a new life."

Ryan whispered:

"With me."

Nathan nodded.

"Yes."

The pain between them was impossible to ignore.

Two brothers.

Both victims of the same person.

Both shaped by the same secret.

Ryan stepped closer.

"Why come back now?"

Nathan looked at him.

"Because Victor is back."

Ryan froze.

"What?"

Nathan pulled out a photograph.

A recent photograph.

A man standing outside the Whitmore mansion.

Victor Hale.

Ryan stared.

"When was this taken?"

"Three days ago."

Ryan felt his stomach drop.

Three days.

The same time everything started falling apart.

Nathan continued.

"He didn't come back because of your mother."

"Then why?"

Nathan looked at him.

"Because he knows you found the truth."

Ryan looked toward the exit.

Suddenly every instinct screamed danger.

Because if Victor Hale had been watching...

Then he knew about Maya.

He knew about Oliver.

He knew about the investigation.

Nathan grabbed Ryan's arm.

"Listen to me."

Ryan looked back.

"You cannot trust anyone right now."

Ryan almost laughed.

"That's what everyone keeps telling me."

Nathan's expression became serious.

"Because this time it's true."

Before Ryan could answer...

A loud crash echoed through the warehouse.

Both men turned.

Someone was there.

Someone had been listening.

Nathan's face changed.

"He found us."

Ryan looked toward the darkness.

"Who?"

Nathan whispered:

"The man who destroyed our family."

A shadow moved between the broken walls.

And then a voice spoke.

"Actually..."

Everyone froze.

"I was the one who saved it."

Ryan recognized the voice.

His blood went cold.

May you like

Because the person standing in the shadows...

Was someone he never expected to see again.
