CHAPTER 10 The Video That Evelyn Tried to Erase

CHAPTER 10 The Video That Evelyn Tried to Erase

Ryan Whitmore had faced anger.
He had faced betrayal.
He had faced the painful truth that his own mother had spent years manipulating the people around him.
But nothing prepared him for the look on Evelyn's face when she stood in the doorway.
She wasn't surprised.
She wasn't confused.
She wasn't asking questions.
She looked terrified.
For the first time in Ryan's life...
His mother looked afraid.
Ryan slowly closed the laptop.
The damaged video file remained on the screen.
A message that seemed almost impossible to ignore.
FILE CORRUPTED.
But Ryan knew better now.
Nothing in the Whitmore family happened by accident.
Not the documents.
Not the hidden camera.
Not the lies.
And definitely not this.
"You knew."
Ryan's voice was quiet.
Evelyn didn't answer.
Maya stood beside him.
Her eyes never left Evelyn.
"You knew we found her."
Evelyn finally stepped into the room.
"I knew you would look for answers."
Ryan stared at her.
"That isn't what I asked."
A long silence followed.
Then Evelyn sighed.
"You don't understand what you are getting yourself into."
Ryan almost laughed.
Almost.
Because those words sounded exactly like everything she had said before.
Every warning.
Every excuse.
Every attempt to make herself the only person who knew the truth.
"No."
Ryan shook his head.
"I understand now."
Evelyn looked hurt.
"You think you understand me?"
Ryan looked at her.
"I think I spent my whole life refusing to."
The words hit harder than anger.
Because Evelyn had always controlled arguments through emotion.
Through guilt.
Through memories.
But Ryan wasn't that little boy anymore.
He was a husband.
A father.
A man who had finally seen the damage caused by silence.
Maya looked at the laptop.
"The video."
Evelyn's eyes moved toward it.
Only for a second.
But Ryan noticed.
She wasn't looking at them.
She was looking at the evidence.
"You tried to delete it."
Evelyn immediately responded.
"No."
Too quickly.
Ryan noticed.
"You did."
"I was protecting this family."
Ryan stepped forward.
"Stop."
His voice was firm.
"Stop using that excuse."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Excuse?"
"Yes."
Ryan pointed toward the laptop.
"Every time you hurt someone, you call it protection."
"You controlled me."
"Protection."
"You destroyed Maya's reputation."
"Protection."
"You hid Oliver's inhaler."
Evelyn looked away.
And that was the first time she had no answer.
Ryan's voice became colder.
"How many times do I have to say it?"
"That wasn't protection."
"It was control."
The room went silent.
Then Evelyn sat down.
For the first time...
She looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not perfect.
Just tired.
"I never wanted things to go this far."
Maya looked at her.
"But they did."
Evelyn looked at Maya.
"You don't know what I lost."
Maya's expression hardened.
"And you don't know what you took."
The words stayed in the room.
Because both women had lost something.
But only one of them had chosen to hurt others because of it.
Ryan looked at Evelyn.
"Tell me about the video."
She didn't answer.
"Mom."
A tear rolled down her face.
"Your father was going to leave."
Ryan frowned.
"What?"
"Not me."
She looked at him.
"The company."
Ryan waited.
"He wanted to expose everything."
She swallowed.
"And I knew what would happen."
"What?"
"Everyone would hate me."
There it was.
The truth.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Evelyn had been afraid of losing the image she created.
Ryan shook his head.
"You were afraid of people knowing who you really were."
Evelyn looked down.
"Yes."
The honesty shocked everyone.
Even Maya.
Because it was the first real confession Evelyn had given.
But Ryan wasn't finished.
"What happened that night?"
Evelyn remained silent.
"I deserve the truth."
She looked at him.
"You think the truth will make you feel better?"
"No."
Ryan answered immediately.
"But lies have already destroyed enough."
Evelyn looked toward the window.
Then she whispered:
"Your father confronted me."
Ryan's body became still.
"He knew everything."
"What happened?"
"I begged him not to do it."
"Not to expose me."
Ryan stared.
"And?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"He said he couldn't protect me from the consequences anymore."
Maya watched carefully.
"Then what?"
Evelyn's hands tightened.
"Then he left."
Ryan frowned.
"He left?"
"Yes."
"So how did he die?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"I don't know."
Nobody moved.
Ryan studied her face.
Trying to decide if she was telling the truth.
Then Evelyn said something unexpected.
"Your father didn't die because of me."
Ryan froze.
"What?"
"He died because someone else wanted those files."
Maya looked confused.
"Someone else?"
Evelyn nodded.
"There were people involved that I never knew about."
Ryan stared.
"You're saying someone framed you?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"I'm saying I made mistakes."
A pause.
"But I wasn't the only person hiding something."
Before Ryan could respond...
The laptop suddenly turned on.
Everyone turned.
The corrupted video file had reopened.
A single frame appeared.
Thomas Whitmore.
His father.
Ryan stopped breathing.
The audio crackled.
Then his father's voice filled the room.
"Ryan..."
Everyone froze.
"If you are seeing this..."
Static interrupted.
Then another sentence.
"Trust no one in this house."
The screen flickered.
Ryan looked at Evelyn.
Then Maya.
Then the video.
His father's warning echoed through the room.
Trust no one.
The file continued.
A few more seconds.
Then Thomas said something that changed everything.
"The person who betrayed me is not the person you think..."
The video cut off again.
This time completely.
Ryan stood frozen.
Because suddenly he realized something terrifying.
They had spent all this time investigating Evelyn.
But maybe...
They had only been looking at one piece of the story.
And somewhere inside the Whitmore family...
Someone else was still hiding.
Someone who had escaped every accusation.
Someone who had been watching them uncover the truth.
Ryan looked at Maya.
"We need to find out who else was involved."
Maya nodded.
But before they could move...
Ryan's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
A voice spoke.
This time...
A woman's voice.
"Ryan."
He froze.
Because he recognized it.
Even after twenty years.
It was a voice from his childhood.
A voice he thought he would never hear again.
His aunt Claire.
But Claire wasn't supposed to have his number.
She whispered:
"Ryan, listen carefully."
"There is someone inside your house who knows everything."
Ryan looked toward the hallway.
His face changed.
"Who?"
Claire's voice became urgent.
"Your mother isn't the only person you need to fear."
The call ended.
Ryan slowly lowered the phone.
Because the nightmare had changed.
The enemy was no longer outside the family.
It was inside.
And this time...
May you like
The truth wasn't hidden in a drawer.
It was living under the same roof.
