CHAPTER 6: The Necklace That Was Never Lost

CHAPTER 6: The Necklace That Was Never Lost
The hospital room felt smaller than before.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Rafael De Santos stood beside Emily’s bed, holding the necklace in his hand.
A piece of metal.
A simple chain.

A family symbol.
But to him, it carried twelve years of unanswered questions.
Twelve years of anger.
Twelve years of believing he knew exactly how his father died.
The necklace was supposed to be gone forever.
Destroyed.
Lost with the man who once carried it.
Yet now it rested in Rafael’s palm.
Warm from Emily’s hand.
Waiting.
Like it had been hiding until the right moment.
Diego stared at it.
“Boss…”
Rafael did not answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the small symbol attached to the chain.
A silver crest.
The De Santos family mark.
Something only three people had ever owned.
His grandfather.
His father.
And Rafael.
Except now there was a fourth connection.
Emily Carter.
A nurse.
A single mother.
A woman who had nothing to do with his world.
Yet somehow, she had been protecting one of his family’s greatest secrets.
“How did you get this?”
Rafael finally asked.
Emily looked nervous.
Like she knew the answer would change everything.
“Your father gave it to me.”
The words were quiet.
But they hit harder than any weapon.
Rafael’s expression remained controlled.
“How?”
Emily looked at Nate.
Then back at him.
“Because he trusted me.”
Rafael took one step closer.
“My father trusted very few people.”
“I know.”
“Then why you?”
Emily looked down.
“Because I saved his life.”
Silence.
Diego looked confused.
“Your father?”
Emily nodded.
“Seven years ago.”
Rafael’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s impossible.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
“He survived.”
The room went completely still.
Rafael felt something inside him freeze.
His entire life had been built around one truth.
His father was dead.
Gone.
Buried.
A memory.
A painful chapter that could never be reopened.
But Emily was telling him something impossible.
Something that challenged everything he believed.
“My father died twelve years ago.”
Emily looked at him.
“That’s what everyone wanted you to believe.”
Rafael stared at her.
“Everyone?”
Emily nodded.
“The night he came to my apartment, he wasn’t running from an accident.”
“He was running from someone.”
Diego stepped forward.
“Who?”
Emily hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Rafael’s voice became colder.
“But you know something.”
She looked away.
Again.
Rafael noticed.
“You’re hiding something.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect Nate.”
“You think hiding the truth protects him?”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“I think knowing the truth gets him killed.”
That sentence changed the atmosphere instantly.
Because Rafael understood fear.
Real fear.
Not the kind people showed when they saw him.
The kind a mother felt when she believed someone could hurt her child.
“What exactly did my father tell you?”
Emily took a slow breath.
“He said there were people inside his organization who wanted him gone.”
Rafael looked at Diego.
Neither man spoke.
“He said he trusted only one person.”
“Who?”
Emily looked directly at Rafael.
“You.”
The answer should have brought relief.
Instead, it brought anger.
Because if his father trusted him…
Why did he disappear?
Why did he leave Rafael believing he was dead?
Why did he never return?
“What else?”
Emily hesitated.
“He said if he disappeared, I should wait.”
“Wait for what?”
“For you to become strong enough.”
Rafael’s expression changed slightly.
The words felt familiar.
Because his father had always said something similar.
A person could not lead until they understood loss.
A person could not protect others until they understood pain.
But Rafael never imagined those lessons were preparation.
Not for business.
For war.
The hospital lights flickered.
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
Then the power went out.
The room went dark.
Emily gasped.
Nate immediately grabbed Rafael’s hand.
The reaction was automatic.
The boy did not think.
He simply reached for the person he believed could protect him.
Rafael looked down.
Seven years old.
Terrified.
But still standing.
“Stay close.”
Rafael’s voice was calm.
Nate nodded.
A few seconds later, emergency lights turned on.
Red lights filled the hallway.
Diego looked outside.
“Something is wrong.”
Rafael knew.
Hospitals did not lose power randomly.
Especially not after someone had already attempted to enter Emily’s room.
A nurse suddenly ran past.
“Everyone stay inside!”
Diego looked at Rafael.
“That wasn’t normal.”
“No.”
Rafael opened the door slightly.
The hallway was chaos.
Doctors moved quickly.
Patients were confused.
Security guards were talking into radios.
Then Rafael saw him.
A man standing near the elevator.
Watching.
Waiting.
The same Falcon Shield employee from Emily’s apartment.
Rafael’s eyes narrowed.
“He came back.”
Diego immediately moved.
But Rafael stopped him.
“No.”
Diego looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because he wants us to chase him.”
The man turned.
And smiled.
A message.
Not an escape.
A warning.
Rafael stepped into the hallway.
The man spoke from a distance.
“You really thought the necklace was the secret?”
Rafael stopped.
The entire hallway seemed to disappear.
“What did you say?”
The man smiled.
“You found the piece your father left behind.”
A pause.
“But you still don’t know why he left it.”
Rafael moved forward.
“Who are you?”
The man laughed.
“Someone who knows what happened that night.”
“Who sent you?”
The man looked at Nate.
Then answered:
“Someone who knows the boy remembers more than he should.”
The elevator doors opened.
The man stepped inside.
Rafael reached the elevator too late.
The doors closed.
But before they disappeared completely, the man said one final thing.
“Ask your father why he chose Emily Carter.”
Then he was gone.
Rafael stood there.
Silent.
Because that question disturbed him more than any threat.
Not:
Who killed his father?
Not:
Who betrayed him?
But:
Why did his father trust a stranger more than his own son?
Behind him, Nate whispered:
“Mr. Rafael?”
Rafael turned.
The boy looked scared.
“Did my mom do something wrong?”
For the first time that night, Rafael’s answer came immediately.
“No.”
“Your mother protected a secret.”
He looked toward the elevator.
“And now we are going to find out why.”
Back inside the hospital room, Rafael opened the necklace carefully.
Something inside the metal compartment caught his attention.
A hidden piece.
A tiny folded paper.
Impossible to see unless someone knew where to look.
Diego watched as Rafael unfolded it.
Only six words were written.
Six words that changed everything.
“Trust no one from the old circle.”
Rafael stared at the message.
Because the old circle meant only one thing.
The people closest to his father.
The people closest to him.
And among those names…
One stood above all others.
A person Rafael had trusted for years.
A person who had been beside him through every battle.
A person who knew every secret.
Diego saw Rafael’s expression.
“Who?”
Rafael slowly looked up.
And whispered:
May you like
“Someone I never thought I would have to question.”
