CHAPTER 11: The Secret Written in Blood

CHAPTER 11: The Secret Written in Blood
The abandoned church remained silent.
Not peaceful.
Silent.
There was a difference.
Peace came from safety.
Silence came from waiting.

Rafael De Santos stood in the center of the old building, staring at the photograph in Adrian’s hand.
A photograph that should not exist.
A photograph that changed everything.
His eyes moved between the image and Nate.
The boy stood frozen beside Adrian.
Confused.
Afraid.
Trying to understand why every adult around him suddenly looked like they had seen a ghost.
Rafael noticed something immediately.
Nate was not looking at the photograph.
He was looking at him.
Waiting for an answer.
Waiting for someone to tell him that he was still safe.
That was what mattered.
Not the secrets.
Not the family history.
Not the years of betrayal.
The child came first.
“What is that?”
Rafael’s voice was controlled.
But everyone inside the church felt the anger underneath it.
Adrian held the photograph tighter.
“The truth.”
Rafael stepped forward.
“I did not ask for a dramatic answer.”
His eyes became colder.
“I asked what it is.”
Adrian looked at Nate.
Then back at Rafael.
“Your father took this picture the night before he disappeared.”
Rafael’s expression changed slightly.
“The night before?”
“Yes.”
“That makes no sense.”
Adrian nodded.
“That is because your entire life has been built around a lie.”
The words struck harder than Rafael expected.
Again.
Another person telling him the same thing.
Another person claiming they knew what was best for him.
Rafael looked at Nate.
“Did they hurt you?”
Nate shook his head quickly.
“No.”
“Did anyone touch you?”
“No.”
Rafael studied him carefully.
Children lied differently than adults.
Adults tried to hide fear.
Children tried to hide disappointment.
Nate was telling the truth.
At least about that.
Rafael looked back at Adrian.
“Explain.”
Adrian slowly placed the photograph on the table.
“Your father discovered something about the De Santos family.”
“What?”
“A secret older than Falcon Shield.”
Rafael waited.
“The family fortune was never built the way you believed.”
The room became colder.
Adrian continued.
“Your grandfather created a private network.”
“Not just businesses.”
“Connections.”
“Information.”
“People who owed the family favors.”
Rafael frowned.
“That is not a secret.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“The secret was how that network was used.”
Rafael looked toward Mateo.
His father remained silent.
That silence bothered him.
Because Mateo had always been the man with answers.
Now he looked like a man carrying regret.
“What did my father find?”
Adrian took a breath.
“He discovered someone had been using the family network to manipulate events.”
“Money.”
“Contracts.”
“Disappearances.”
Rafael’s eyes narrowed.
“And Nate?”
Adrian looked at the boy.
“That is where everything changed.”
Nate stepped back slightly.
Rafael immediately noticed.
He moved closer to him.
Not too close.
Just enough.
A silent reminder.
You are not alone.
Adrian continued.
“Your father met Emily Carter because of one reason.”
“He needed someone outside the family.”
“Someone nobody would suspect.”
Rafael looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because he knew the betrayal came from inside.”
A pause.
“He knew someone close to him was watching.”
Rafael’s mind returned to the necklace.
The note.
The warning.
The old circle.
“Who was he afraid of?”
Adrian did not answer.
Instead, he looked at Mateo.
Mateo finally spoke.
“Me.”
Everyone turned.
Rafael stared at his father.
“What?”
Mateo lowered his eyes.
“I was afraid of what would happen if I told you everything.”
Rafael’s jaw tightened.
“You were afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
Mateo looked at him.
“Of what the truth would make you become.”
The words confused Rafael.
“What does that mean?”
Mateo stepped closer.
“When I disappeared, I knew the person who attacked me would eventually come after you.”
“Because you were the next leader.”
“But there was another reason.”
“What reason?”
Mateo looked at Nate.
“Because of him.”
The church became silent.
Rafael looked down at the photograph again.
The baby.
The date.
The connection.
“What are you saying?”
Mateo sighed.
“Nate is not just a witness.”
“He is part of the secret.”
Rafael felt anger rising.
“Do not speak about him like he is an object.”
Mateo immediately nodded.
“You’re right.”
A pause.
“He is a person.”
“An innocent child.”
“But his existence proves something.”
“What?”
Mateo looked at Rafael.
“That night, I did not only escape with information.”
“I escaped with someone who could expose everything.”
Rafael looked at Nate.
The boy’s face showed confusion.
“My mom said I was just a baby.”
“She was right.”
Mateo’s voice softened.
“You were.”
“Then how do I remember?”
Mateo looked at him.
“Because you saw something.”
Nate became quiet.
“What?”
Mateo took a slow breath.
“You saw the person who started the fire.”
The room froze.
Rafael looked at Nate.
The boy’s face changed.
Like a door inside his memory had suddenly opened.
A small hand.
A frightened expression.
A voice.
A smell of smoke.
Nate grabbed his own head.
“I…”
Rafael immediately moved.
“Nate?”
The boy closed his eyes.
“I remember the hallway.”
Everyone became still.
“What hallway?”
Nate’s breathing became faster.
“The apartment.”
“The fire.”
“My mom was crying.”
Rafael crouched down.
“Look at me.”
Nate opened his eyes.
“You’re safe.”
The boy nodded.
Then whispered:
“There was a man.”
Rafael waited.
“What man?”
Nate swallowed.
“He was wearing a ring.”
“What kind of ring?”
The boy looked at Rafael.
Then slowly pointed.
At Adrian.
Everyone froze.
Adrian looked down at his own hand.
At the ring he had worn for decades.
A black stone.
A silver design.
The same symbol.
Rafael immediately stepped between Adrian and Nate.
“Adrian.”
The older man looked shocked.
“No.”
His voice changed.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“That’s not what you think.”
Rafael’s eyes hardened.
“Then explain why a seven-year-old boy remembers your ring at a fire connected to my father’s disappearance.”
Adrian said nothing.
And that silence was the answer.
Outside, thunder shook the sky.
Inside the church, twelve years of lies finally began collapsing.
Then Adrian whispered something that made Rafael freeze.
“I didn’t start the fire.”
A pause.
“But I know who did.”
Rafael stared.
“Who?”
Adrian looked toward the church doors.
“They are closer than you think.”
At that exact moment…
The lights outside the building disappeared.
Every vehicle engine stopped.
Someone had cut the power.
Again.
Diego’s voice suddenly came through Rafael’s hidden earpiece.
“Rafael.”
The signal was weak.
“There’s a problem.”
“What?”
A pause.
Then Diego said:
“We were betrayed.”
Rafael’s expression changed.
“By who?”
The answer came seconds later.
And it was the last name Rafael expected.
“Your mother.”
Rafael froze.
May you like
Because his mother had been dead for fifteen years.
