CHAPTER 14: The Recording That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 14: The Recording That Changed Everything

The hallway outside the abandoned building became completely silent.

Rafael De Santos stood frozen.

His hand rested against the door.

His mind refused to accept what his ears were hearing.

A voice from the past.

A voice he had spent fifteen years trying to forget because remembering it hurt too much.

His mother.

Elena De Santos.

Alive in a recording.

Speaking directly to him.

“Rafael…”

The recording continued.

“If you are hearing this, then something went terribly wrong.”

Rafael closed his eyes.

For a moment, he was not the man feared by the city.

Not the businessman.

Not the leader.

Not the person everyone expected him to be.

He was just a son hearing his mother’s voice again.

A son who never got a goodbye.

Inside the room, nobody noticed him yet.

Emily stood near the table.

Kell watched the doorway.

Victor looked at the recording device.

And Nate sat quietly in the corner, holding his backpack tightly against his chest.

The recording continued.

“I know you will have questions.”

“I know you will be angry.”

“You have every right to be.”

Rafael opened his eyes.

Every word felt like it was meant for him.

“I need you to understand one thing.”

“I never left you.”

A sharp pain crossed Rafael’s face.

Because that was the one thing he had never been able to forgive.

The belief that she left.

That everyone he loved eventually disappeared.

The recording continued.

“I was taken from you.”

“Not because I was weak.”

“But because I discovered something that could destroy people with power.”

Emily covered her mouth.

She had heard pieces of this story.

But never this.

“I discovered that someone inside our family had been building a second empire.”

“An empire based on fear.”

“Manipulation.”

“And control.”

Rafael looked toward the room.

Now he understood.

The family war was not new.

It had existed before him.

Long before him.

“Elena…”

Mateo whispered from behind Rafael.

Rafael turned slightly.

His father stood there.

He had followed him.

For once, Rafael did not get angry.

Not yet.

Because the recording had his full attention.

Then Elena said something that changed everything.

“The person who betrayed us was not Victor.”

The room froze.

Victor looked up.

“What?”

Everyone heard it.

Even from outside.

The recording continued.

“Victor made mistakes.”

“He was arrogant.”

“He wanted power.”

“But he was not the person who destroyed our family.”

Rafael slowly looked at Victor.

The man who had carried the blame for years.

The man everyone believed was responsible.

The man who seemed guilty.

Was not the real enemy.

“Then who was it?”

Rafael whispered.

As if his mother could answer him.

The recording continued.

“The person responsible was someone who knew us better than anyone.”

“Someone we trusted completely.”

A pause.

“Someone who knew every weakness.”

The recording stopped for a moment.

Then Elena said:

“Someone who knew Rafael would survive without me.”

Rafael felt his chest tighten.

Because his mother had known him.

Even from the past.

She knew exactly what kind of man he would become.

The recording continued.

“I left clues.”

“I knew I might not survive.”

“I knew Mateo might disappear.”

“So I created a trail.”

“The necklace.”

“The notebooks.”

“The people I trusted.”

Rafael looked at Emily.

She looked back.

Both understood.

Everything had been connected.

“I need Rafael to find the truth himself.”

“Because if I tell him too early…”

A pause.

“The person watching him will know.”

Rafael’s eyes narrowed.

Watching him.

The words repeated in his mind.

Someone had been watching him for fifteen years.

The recording continued.

“And Rafael…”

The voice became softer.

“If you are hearing this…”

“I need you to remember something.”

“You are not your anger.”

“You are not your pain.”

“You are not the things people did to you.”

A silence.

“You are my son.”

Rafael looked down.

For the first time in years, he felt something crack inside.

Not weakness.

Not fear.

Something he had buried.

Grief.

Then Elena spoke her final words.

“The person who betrayed us is someone who has always been close.”

“Someone who helped you build your empire.”

“Someone who knows where you are.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

The silence afterward was heavier than the recording itself.

Then Rafael pushed the door open.

Everyone turned.

Emily’s eyes filled immediately.

“Rafael.”

He walked inside.

Not toward Victor.

Not toward Kell.

Not toward anyone else.

Toward Nate.

The boy looked up.

“You found my mom.”

Rafael nodded.

“Yes.”

Nate stood.

“Is she okay?”

Rafael looked at Emily.

Then back at him.

“She is.”

The boy released a breath.

A small breath.

The kind a child makes when they have been afraid for too long.

Then Rafael turned.

His eyes moved across the room.

Victor.

Kell.

Mateo.

Emily.

Everyone connected to the secret.

“What was the last line?”

Nobody answered.

Rafael already knew.

Someone close.

Someone who knew where he was.

Someone who helped build his empire.

Slowly, he looked toward Diego.

Because one thought appeared in his mind.

A thought he hated.

A thought he did not want to believe.

But could not ignore.

Diego had known about Mateo.

Diego had hidden the truth.

Diego had access to everything.

Then Rafael’s phone vibrated.

A message.

From Diego.

Rafael opened it.

Only one sentence.

I’m sorry you found out this way.

Rafael stared.

Then another message appeared.

I never wanted you to know.

A third message.

But she forced me to choose.

Rafael’s blood ran cold.

Because there was only one question left.

Who was “she”?

Then Diego sent one final message.

A photograph.

Rafael looked at it.

And the world stopped.

The picture showed Diego standing beside someone.

Someone Rafael recognized.

Someone impossible.

A woman.

Older.

Alive.

His mother.

Elena De Santos.

And beneath the picture were five words.

Your mother is the enemy.

Rafael stared at the screen.

His entire reality collapsed again.

Because now he had to face the most painful possibility of all.

What if the person he spent fifteen years mourning…

May you like

Was the person who started everything?
