CHAPTER 4: The Apartment That Held the Truth

CHAPTER 4: The Apartment That Held the Truth

The apartment building looked ordinary from the outside.

That was what made Rafael suspicious.

The most dangerous secrets were rarely hidden behind impressive doors.

They were hidden in places people ignored.

A cracked hallway.

A broken elevator.

A building where neighbors learned not to ask questions.

The kind of place where someone could disappear without anyone noticing.

Rafael stood inside the lobby of Emily Carter’s apartment building while rainwater dripped from his coat.

Diego stood beside him.

Two security men waited near the entrance.

But Rafael did not bring them inside.

This was not about intimidation.

It was about finding the truth before someone destroyed it.

“This place has been watched,” Diego said quietly.

Rafael looked around.

“How do you know?”

“Security camera near the entrance is broken.”

“Broken?”

“No.”

Diego looked upward.

“Disabled.”

Rafael studied the ceiling.

Someone had not wanted records.

Someone had planned ahead.

“How long?”

Diego checked his phone.

“About two months.”

Rafael’s expression changed slightly.

Two months.

That meant this was not a sudden decision.

Someone had been monitoring Emily long before tonight.

“Who had access to the camera system?”

Diego looked through the information.

“Building management.”

“Anyone else?”

A pause.

Then:

“Falcon Shield.”

Rafael became completely still.

Again.

His own company.

His own name.

His own people.

Being used against innocent civilians.

“Open the door.”

The apartment door had been forced once before.

The lock was damaged.

Diego examined the frame.

“They didn’t break in randomly.”

Rafael looked at him.

“They were searching.”

Diego nodded.

“They knew exactly what they wanted.”

Inside, the apartment was small.

But clean.

Extremely clean.

The furniture was old.

The kitchen appliances were outdated.

The walls needed repainting.

But everything had been arranged carefully.

A home built by someone trying to create stability with limited resources.

Rafael walked slowly through the rooms.

He noticed things most people would miss.

A child’s drawings attached to the refrigerator.

A stack of school papers on the table.

A small pair of shoes near the door.

A calendar filled with work schedules.

Every piece told the same story.

Emily Carter had spent years sacrificing everything for her son.

Diego opened a drawer.

“Boss.”

Rafael walked over.

Inside were documents.

Bills.

Medical receipts.

School forms.

Nothing unusual.

Then Diego lifted a folder.

“This.”

Rafael opened it.

The papers were empty.

Not blank.

Removed.

Someone had taken the contents.

“Someone already found it.”

Diego looked around.

“They searched this place before we arrived.”

Rafael’s jaw tightened.

“Not before.”

Diego looked confused.

“What?”

Rafael pointed toward the floor.

Small drops of water.

Fresh.

Near the bedroom.

Someone had entered recently.

Very recently.

“They’re still here.”

The words had barely left Rafael’s mouth when a sound came from the hallway.

A floorboard moved.

Diego immediately reached inside his jacket.

Rafael lifted one hand.

Stop.

He walked toward the bedroom.

Slowly.

Quietly.

The door was slightly open.

A shadow moved behind it.

Rafael pushed the door open.

A man jumped toward the window.

Diego reacted instantly.

The stranger reached the fire escape.

The same fire escape Nate had used.

But this time, he was not running from danger.

He was running from Rafael.

“Stop.”

The man ignored him.

He climbed down.

Rafael stepped onto the balcony.

The rain hit his face.

The stranger looked back.

For one second, their eyes met.

And Rafael recognized him.

Not personally.

Professionally.

The man wore a Falcon Shield jacket.

One of his own employees.

The stranger disappeared into the darkness.

Diego returned seconds later.

“He got away.”

Rafael did not answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the empty fire escape.

Because something bothered him.

The man had not looked afraid.

He looked desperate.

Like someone following orders.

Not someone making decisions.

“He was not the person in charge.”

Diego nodded.

“You think Kell sent him?”

“I know Kell sent him.”

The certainty in Rafael’s voice was absolute.

Inside the apartment, Rafael returned to Nate’s bedroom.

The room was small.

A child’s room.

A place where a seven-year-old should have felt safe.

But Rafael noticed something strange.

The bed was pushed slightly away from the wall.

He moved it.

Behind it was a small space.

And inside that space was a plastic container.

Diego looked surprised.

“Nate hid it.”

Rafael opened the container.

Inside were notebooks.

Several of them.

Emily’s handwriting covered every page.

Dates.

Names.

Locations.

Details.

Rafael began reading.

Then he stopped.

Because one name appeared again and again.

Falcon Shield.

But underneath it was something else.

A name Rafael had not expected.

A name that made everything more complicated.

Lucian De Santos.

Diego’s face changed.

“No.”

Rafael slowly looked at him.

“You know that name.”

Diego did not answer.

“Diego.”

The warning was clear.

Diego looked down.

“Lucian was your father’s business partner.”

Rafael stared at the notebook.

“My father has been dead for twelve years.”

“I know.”

“Then why is Emily writing his name?”

Diego had no answer.

Rafael turned another page.

The handwriting became messier.

More rushed.

Like Emily wrote these words while afraid.

Someone inside the De Santos organization knows the truth.

Rafael read the sentence again.

Then again.

Because it changed everything.

This was not only about Falcon Shield.

This was not only about Kell.

Someone had connected the current operation to Rafael’s own family history.

A history he thought was buried.

A history nobody was supposed to uncover.

The apartment suddenly felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Because Rafael realized something terrifying.

Emily Carter had not accidentally discovered corruption.

She had discovered a secret someone had protected for more than a decade.

Diego looked at him.

“What do we do now?”

Rafael closed the notebook.

His expression became unreadable.

“Now?”

He looked toward the hallway.

“Now we find out why they were willing to hurt a nurse…”

“Threaten a child…”

“And risk everything…”

A pause.

“For a secret that started before Nate was even born.”

At that exact moment, Rafael’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“You should stop looking through those notebooks.”

Rafael’s eyes narrowed.

“Kell.”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“You really should have listened.”

Rafael looked down at the evidence in his hand.

“Tell me something.”

“What?”

“Why are you afraid of a seven-year-old boy?”

Silence.

Then Kell answered.

“Because that boy remembers the night your family was destroyed.”

The call ended.

Rafael stood motionless.

Because for the first time in twelve years…

May you like

He questioned everything he believed.
