CHAPTER 2: The Woman Behind the Secret

CHAPTER 2: The Woman Behind the Secret
The black SUV moved through the rain-covered streets faster than it should have.
But nobody inside the vehicle complained.
Nobody dared.

Rafael De Santos sat in the back seat beside Nate, his eyes fixed on the city passing outside the window.
For most people, the storm created chaos.
Traffic slowed.
People rushed for shelter.
Businesses closed early.
But Rafael saw something different.
He saw movement.
He saw patterns.
He saw opportunities for people to hide.
And tonight, someone had hidden something from him.
Something big.
Nate sat quietly beside him.
The oversized jacket still covered his small frame.
His hands disappeared inside the sleeves.
Every few seconds, he looked toward the hospital entrance getting closer.
Like he was afraid that if he looked away, something worse would happen.
Rafael noticed.
“You’re worried.”
Nate nodded.
“Yes.”
“About your mother?”
Another nod.
Rafael waited.
Usually, people filled silence because they were uncomfortable.
But Nate did not.
The boy understood silence.
He had lived inside it.
Finally, Rafael asked:
“What are you afraid of?”
Nate looked down.
“That she won’t wake up.”
The answer was honest.
Simple.
Painful.
Rafael looked away.
Because he understood that fear better than anyone.
Not because he had experienced it.
Because he had spent his entire life avoiding the possibility of caring enough to experience it.
Diego sat in the passenger seat.
He turned slightly.
“Boss.”
Rafael looked forward.
“Yes?”
“I checked Emily Carter’s records.”
“And?”
“She has no criminal history.”
Rafael waited.
“She works two jobs.”
Diego continued.
“Emergency room nurse during the day.”
“Night shifts at Mercy Valley three nights a week.”
Nate looked up.
“She helps people.”
The way he said it was almost defensive.
Like he needed Rafael to understand.
Rafael nodded.
“I know.”
Diego continued.
“She also refused several financial assistance programs.”
“Why?”
“She said she didn’t want charity.”
Rafael looked at Nate.
The answer did not surprise him.
A woman raising a child alone while refusing help was not someone who accepted weakness easily.
“She sounds stubborn,” Rafael said.
Nate almost smiled.
“She is.”
“When she’s scared, she cleans everything.”
Rafael looked at him.
“She cleans?”
“Yes.”
“The whole apartment.”
Nate nodded.
“She says if everything is organized, problems feel smaller.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Rafael looked out the window again.
He understood that sentence.
More than Nate realized.
Some people controlled their environment because they could not control their problems.
The SUV stopped outside Mercy Valley Hospital.
The moment the door opened, Nate jumped out.
Rafael immediately followed.
Security guards near the entrance noticed him.
Their expressions changed.
Everyone in the city knew Rafael De Santos.
But tonight, something was different.
He was not arriving with bodyguards.
He was not arriving to intimidate anyone.
He was arriving with a frightened child holding his hand.
The hospital lobby became quiet.
Nate pulled Rafael toward the reception desk.
“My mom.”
The nurse looked down.
“Name?”
“Emily Carter.”
The nurse typed quickly.
Her expression changed.
“She’s in the emergency department.”
“Can we see her?”
The nurse looked at Rafael.
Then Nate.
“Only family members are allowed.”
Nate’s face fell.
“She’s my mom.”
The nurse softened immediately.
“Are you her son?”
“Yes.”
The nurse looked toward Rafael.
“And you?”
A pause.
Rafael answered calmly.
“I’m here with him.”
The nurse studied him.
Something about his presence made her stop asking questions.
“Room 14.”
Nate ran.
Rafael followed behind.
When the door opened, Nate stopped.
Emily Carter was lying on the hospital bed.
A bandage wrapped around her forehead.
Her eyes were closed.
Machines monitored her heartbeat.
For a few seconds, Nate could not move.
Then:
“Mom?”
His voice cracked.
Emily slowly opened her eyes.
The second she saw him, tears filled her face.
“Nate?”
The boy rushed forward.
The nurse moved aside.
“I’m sorry.”
His mother tried to sit up.
“What are you doing here?”
Nate grabbed her hand.
“I found help.”
Emily looked confused.
Then she noticed Rafael standing near the door.
Her entire expression changed.
Fear.
Recognition.
Concern.
“You.”
Rafael stepped closer.
“You know who I am?”
Emily looked away.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
Nate looked between them.
“How?”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Because they used your name.”
Rafael’s expression became colder.
“Who?”
Emily hesitated.
“The men who came to our apartment.”
Nate squeezed her hand.
“Mom.”
She looked at her son.
Then back at Rafael.
“They said they were collecting money for Falcon Shield.”
Rafael said nothing.
Emily continued.
“They told me the company belonged to you.”
A dangerous silence filled the room.
“I told them I had no idea what they were talking about.”
“What happened next?”
Emily looked terrified.
“They told me nobody says no to Rafael De Santos.”
Nate stepped closer to his mother.
Rafael felt something change inside him.
Because now he understood.
Someone was not simply abusing his company.
Someone was using his reputation as a weapon.
They were making innocent people afraid of him.
And they were doing it intentionally.
“Who attacked you?”
Emily looked down.
“I don’t know.”
“Think.”
Her hands trembled.
“I heard one of them call the other man by a name.”
Rafael waited.
“Kell.”
The room went completely still.
Nate looked confused.
But Rafael and Diego understood.
The name was no longer a suspicion.
It was a confirmation.
Kell was not just involved.
He was close enough to use Rafael’s own organization.
Rafael stepped away from the bed.
His phone rang.
The screen displayed one name.
KELL MORGAN.
Everyone in the room saw it.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Nate looked up at Rafael.
“That’s him?”
Rafael stared at the phone.
The man who betrayed him was calling.
The man who terrified Emily Carter.
The man who made a little boy run through a storm.
Finally, Rafael answered.
“Hello, Kell.”
A nervous silence came through the speaker.
Then a voice replied.
“You found the woman.”
Rafael’s eyes became ice.
“You sound surprised.”
A pause.
Then Kell laughed softly.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.”
Rafael looked at Emily.
Then Nate.
“Explain.”
Kell lowered his voice.
“You were never supposed to meet that boy.”
Rafael’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Why?”
Another pause.
Then Kell said something that changed everything.
“Because Nate is the only person who knows what really happened.”
The call ended.
Rafael stared at the screen.
For the first time in years…
He had a question he could not immediately answer.
What did a seven-year-old boy witness?
May you like
And why was someone powerful enough to fear him?
