Chapter 8 - Dead Children Keep Secrets.

Daniel ran toward the hallway, but Vanessa stepped directly into his path.
"You cannot go down there without security," she said.
"Move."
Something in Daniel’s voice made Dr. Hale retreat half a step.
Vanessa did not.
The scream did not come again.
Noah seized Lily’s hand and followed his father toward the music room.
The hidden bookcase stood closed.
Daniel stared at it in disbelief when Noah pressed the concealed catch.
The passage opened.
Cold air spilled into the room.
Daniel whispered Claire’s name.
Then every light in the mansion went out.
Lily screamed once before Noah covered her with his arms.
Emergency lamps glowed red along the baseboards.
Vanessa moved in the darkness faster than anyone expected.
She grabbed Lily and pulled her backward into the hallway.
Noah lunged after them.
By the time Daniel found his phone flashlight, Vanessa had dragged Lily against the floral wall near the staircase.
A heavy glass bottle from the console table was raised in Vanessa’s hand.
Her face no longer looked elegant.
It looked desperate.
"You should have stayed confused," she told Lily.
Noah stepped between them.
"Leave her alone."
Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward him.
"You have no idea what this family has protected."
"I know you lied about Mom."
"Your mother could have walked away."
"Then where is she?"
Vanessa lifted the bottle slightly.
"Quiet children survive complicated families."
Noah spread his arms in front of Lily.
"You already took Dad from us."
His voice shook, but he kept going.
"You’re not taking her too."
Vanessa seized his jaw with her free hand.
Her nails pressed into his skin.
"Say that again," she whispered, "and your mother disappears first."
Noah stopped breathing.
Lily stopped crying.
Daniel, several yards away, went completely still.
Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said only after the words left her mouth.
Noah stared at her.
"She’s alive."
Vanessa released him.
Daniel moved forward.
"Where is Claire?"
Vanessa backed toward the staircase.
"Daniel, listen to me."
"Where is my wife?"
A security alarm suddenly began shrieking through the mansion.
Dr. Hale ran for the side corridor.
Noah saw him carrying a small black remote.
Daniel shouted for security to stop him.
No one came.
Instead, the front doors opened and two uniformed police officers entered with the family’s longtime groundskeeper, Samuel Reed.
Samuel held up his phone.
"I called them when the cameras went dead."
Daniel pointed at Vanessa.
"Nobody touches my children."
Vanessa’s hand lowered.
For a moment, Noah thought the danger had ended.
Then Lily slowly stepped from behind him.
She pointed at the torn floral wallpaper.
"Dad."
Everyone turned.
A weak knock came from inside the wall.
Lily’s voice became barely more than a breath.
"Mom is still in there."
The officers tore away the damaged wallpaper.
Behind it was not Claire.
It was a steel door.
For months Vanessa had relied on the children sounding frightened, confused, and unbelievable.
Now one careless sentence had transformed their fear into a fact that every adult in the hallway had heard.

And on the door, someone had written one word in fresh red marker.
MOVED.
