Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Photographs.

Noah pulled Lily away from the wall so quickly that her bare feet slid across the polished floor.

They stood frozen beneath the amber sconce, listening for another sound.

Nothing came.

The mansion settled around them with old pipes, distant wood creaks, and the whisper of wind against the windows.

"You heard her," Lily said.

Noah wanted to deny it because denial still offered a normal explanation.

Instead he nodded.

"I heard something."

Lily gripped his sleeve.

"It was Mom."

Noah looked at the torn wallpaper.

The opening was barely wider than his thumbnail, but beyond it was unmistakable darkness.

Hawthorne House had been built in 1912, and his mother used to joke that half the mansion was probably hidden inside the other half.

There were sealed servant stairs, dumbwaiter shafts, and rooms that appeared on old blueprints but not on modern floor plans.

Claire loved the history of the house.

Vanessa hated it.

She had ordered contractors to close several unused passages within days of moving in.

At the time, Noah had assumed she wanted the place renovated.

Now he wondered what she wanted sealed.

He led Lily back to her bedroom and locked the door.

The family photographs covering her dresser made his stomach turn.

Vanessa had replaced one image after another with newer pictures taken after Claire’s funeral.

Daniel and Vanessa beside the lake.

Vanessa holding Lily’s birthday cake while Lily looked as though she wanted to vanish.

Noah crossed the room and picked up a silver frame.

Behind the newer photograph, another picture had been left hidden beneath it.

Claire stood in the garden with Noah and Lily wrapped around her waist.

Her red hair blew across her laughing face.

The picture had been taken fourteen days before the fire.

Noah remembered the afternoon because Claire had received a phone call that changed her mood completely.

She had walked away from the children and said, "You cannot keep changing records and calling it medicine."

At the time, Noah thought she was arguing with someone from the hospital where she volunteered.

He remembered something else now.

Vanessa had been standing inside the kitchen doorway, listening.

"Why did Dad let her take Mom’s pictures down?" Lily asked.

Noah had no answer that would not hurt her.

Daniel Mercer had once been the kind of father who attended every soccer match and burned pancakes on Sundays.

After Claire died, he became a voice on a phone and an expensive car arriving after Lily was asleep.

He said work kept the Mercer Foundation alive.

Noah thought grief had made him run.

But lately every call ended the same way.

"Listen to Vanessa."

"Take your sister’s medicine seriously."

"Stop turning this house into a mystery."

Noah looked again at the hidden photograph.

Claire’s hand rested over a small gold locket at her throat.

Noah suddenly remembered seeing that locket after the fire.

Not in the coffin.

Not at the funeral.

On Vanessa.

She had worn it beneath a black silk blouse when the lawyers read Claire’s will.

A floorboard creaked outside Lily’s room.

The siblings went silent.

A shadow stopped beneath the door.

The handle turned once.

Then Vanessa’s voice drifted through the wood.

"Noah, open the door."

He slipped the photograph under Lily’s mattress.

"Why?"

He also noticed that Vanessa had removed every photograph showing Claire near the west hallway, as if even the background of those pictures contained something dangerous.

That was no longer decoration to Noah; it was evidence of a careful replacement.

There was a long pause.

"Because," Vanessa answered softly, "someone has been walking where they do not belong."
