Chapter 15 - Runway Thirty-One.

Rain covered Mercer Airfield in a silver haze.

Federal vehicles entered through the main gate while Daniel’s car approached from the service road.

Agent Torres had ordered the children to remain at Hawthorne House.

Noah ignored her.

So did Lily.

Claire refused to leave them behind again, and Daniel no longer had the courage to overrule her.

The private jet waited beside Hangar Three with its engines running.

Vanessa stood near the stairs in a cream trench coat, her blonde hair pulled beneath a scarf.

Beside her was an elderly woman in a wheelchair.

Eleanor Mercer looked frail from a distance.

Then she turned her head and Noah saw alert blue eyes studying every vehicle that approached.

There was nothing confused about her.

Agents spread across the runway.

Vanessa moved behind Eleanor and raised her hands.

"We are cooperating."

Eleanor laughed.

"You never cooperated with anyone in your life."

Daniel stepped from his car.

"Mother."

Eleanor looked at him as though he were late to dinner.

"You always were sentimental at the worst possible moment."

Claire moved beside Daniel.

"Why me?"

Eleanor’s gaze shifted toward her.

"Because Arthur was reckless, and you were curious."

She explained that Lantern began as a way to protect families from public scandal.

Arthur expanded it into extortion.

After his death, Eleanor decided the network was too valuable to destroy.

Claire’s investigation threatened decades of leverage over judges, executives, donors, and politicians.

"So you staged the fire," Noah said.

Eleanor looked at him.

"No."

Everyone went still.

"Vanessa staged the fire."

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Eleanor continued with obvious satisfaction.

"She believed Claire’s death would move her directly into Daniel’s life."

Vanessa snapped, "You approved it."

"I approved containment after you failed to finish what you started."

The alliance fractured in front of them.

Vanessa stepped away from the wheelchair.

"You told me Claire was the only problem."

Eleanor’s smile was thin.

"You became another one."

A gunshot cracked from inside the hangar.

Everyone dropped.

Agents shouted commands.

Noah pulled Lily behind a service vehicle.

Claire covered both children with her body.

A man in Mercer security uniform ran toward the jet carrying a handgun.

He was the same security chief who vanished from Hawthorne House.

Agents ordered him down.

He fired once toward the runway lights and sprinted for the hangar.

Daniel tackled him before he reached cover.

The gun slid across wet pavement.

Vanessa saw it.

She moved first.

Noah realized what she intended and shouted.

Claire turned.

Vanessa reached the weapon, but instead of aiming at the family, she pointed it at Eleanor.

"You made me disposable."

Eleanor did not flinch.

"You always were."

An agent struck Vanessa’s wrist before she could do anything else.

The weapon fell.

Within seconds, both Vanessa and the security chief were restrained.

Eleanor remained perfectly calm in her wheelchair.

Agent Torres approached her with handcuffs.

"Eleanor Mercer, you are being detained pending federal charges."

Eleanor looked past her at Noah.

"Ask your father about Room Seven before you celebrate."

Noah turned toward Daniel.

Daniel’s expression told him the danger was not finished.

"What is Room Seven?" Noah asked.

Rainwater ran down Eleanor's face, but she made no attempt to wipe it away, maintaining the strange dignity of someone who still believed arrest was merely another room she could control.

Noah understood why adults had obeyed her for decades.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"The first person I ever helped Lantern hide."
