Chapter 16 - Room Seven.

Daniel refused to explain Room Seven on the runway.
He waited until the family returned to Hawthorne House, where federal agents had transformed the dining room into an evidence station.
Claire sat beside Noah and Lily.
Daniel remained standing.
"I was twenty-six," he began.
Arthur Mercer was still alive, powerful, and impossible for Daniel to challenge without losing everything.
A young accountant named Thomas Bell discovered that Lantern funds were being moved through charitable accounts.
Thomas threatened to report the transfers.
Arthur told Daniel that Thomas had suffered a breakdown and needed temporary treatment.
Daniel believed him.
He personally signed the emergency placement order.
Thomas disappeared into Room Seven at Lantern House.
"How long?" Claire asked.
Daniel swallowed.
"Eleven months."
Noah stared at his father.
"Did you ever check on him?"
Daniel’s silence lasted too long.
"Not until it was too late."
Thomas was released after signing documents stating that his accusations were products of mental illness.
He lost his career, marriage, and custody of his daughter.
Daniel later learned the financial transfers were real.
Instead of exposing Arthur, he paid Thomas a confidential settlement.
"You buried the truth," Noah said.
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
There was no excuse in his voice this time.
Claire looked hurt but unsurprised.
"And that became the blueprint."
Daniel had shown Arthur that he could be manipulated through fear of scandal and loyalty to the family name.
Years later, when Daniel inherited the foundation, he told himself he was dismantling Lantern while continuing to use its secrecy agreements.
He closed rooms but protected records.
He fired doctors but paid settlements that kept victims silent.
He changed the machinery without destroying the system.
Eleanor simply rebuilt around him.
Agent Torres entered carrying one of the old ledgers.
"Thomas Bell is alive."
Daniel looked shocked.
Torres had located him in Ohio under another name.
He had agreed to speak with investigators after hearing of Eleanor’s arrest.
More importantly, Thomas still possessed copies of the original financial records.
Claire exhaled slowly.
"Then this can finally be proven."
Torres nodded.
"If he survives long enough to testify."
Noah felt the room change.
Thomas had received two anonymous threats within the last hour.
Someone outside the people already arrested was still protecting Lantern.
The encrypted drives from Hawthorne’s safe had also begun remotely erasing themselves despite being disconnected from the internet.
A forensic technician stopped most of the process, but one directory vanished completely.
The directory was labeled CHILDREN.
Lily tightened her hand around Claire’s.
Noah asked what had been inside it.
Torres did not know.
Then Samuel Reed approached from the doorway.
He looked as though he had aged ten years since the night before.
"I might."
Everyone turned toward him.
Samuel admitted Claire had asked him to make a copy of one drive before the fire.
He hid it somewhere no Mercer would willingly search.
"Where?" Noah asked.
Samuel looked toward the dark windows.
"In the grave."
"Whose grave?"
Thomas Bell's old case file contained a photograph of him smiling beside a daughter who was now almost thirty.
Noah imagined losing eleven months to a locked room and then spending the next twenty years trying to convince the world the room had existed.
May you like
Samuel’s eyes settled on Claire.
"Yours."
