Chapter 5 - The Passage With No Door.

The map led to a wall behind the old music room.
Noah waited until midnight, when the housekeeper’s wing went quiet and Vanessa’s bedroom light finally disappeared.
He and Lily crept downstairs carrying a flashlight, Claire’s map, and a screwdriver stolen from the garage.
The music room had not been used since the funeral.
A white sheet covered the piano.
Dust softened every surface except the floor beside the bookcase.
Someone had walked there recently.
Noah pushed the case exactly where Claire’s drawing indicated.
It did not move.
Lily crouched near the baseboard.
"There’s air coming out."
Noah felt along the carved wood until his fingers touched a recessed metal catch.
The bookcase released with a muted click.
Behind it was a narrow opening no wider than a closet door.
Cold air breathed from the darkness.
Lily grabbed Noah’s hand.
"We should call Dad."
Noah showed her his phone.
Daniel had not answered eleven calls that day.
"First we find something he cannot dismiss."
They entered.
The passage smelled of plaster, damp stone, and something medicinal.
Old electrical wires ran beside newer camera cables.
That detail made Noah’s stomach tighten.
Someone had modernized the hidden corridors.
The flashlight beam revealed scratches on the wall at shoulder height.
Farther down they found a paper cup, a torn piece of gauze, and a strand of red hair caught on a nail.
Lily touched it with one trembling finger.
"Mom."
Noah slipped the hair into an envelope from his pocket.
They continued until the passage opened into a tiny hidden room.
A narrow cot stood against one wall.
Leather restraint straps hung loose from its frame.
A tray contained half a sandwich and a plastic cup of water.
On the floor lay Claire’s gold locket.
Noah picked it up and squeezed it in his fist.
He remembered Vanessa wearing it after the funeral.
She must have taken it from this room and later returned it.
Above the cot, someone had scratched dates into the plaster.
There were more than one hundred marks.
Lily whispered, "She was here all this time."
Noah noticed a small camera mounted in the ceiling corner.
A red indicator light blinked once.
Then went dark.
Someone had just stopped watching.
"We have to go," he said.
A sound echoed from the corridor behind them.
Not knocking.
Footsteps.
Slow and deliberate.
Noah switched off the flashlight and pulled Lily beneath the cot.
The hidden room went black.
A thin beam of light appeared beneath the passage door.
Vanessa entered with Dr. Hale.
Noah could see only their shoes.
"They found the letters," Vanessa said.
Hale cursed under his breath.
"Daniel was supposed to keep the boy under control."
"Daniel barely controls himself."
Hale moved closer to the cot.
"What about Claire?"
Vanessa answered with terrifying calm.
"She goes to Lantern House before sunrise."
Lily’s fingers tightened around Noah’s wrist.
Hale sighed.
"And if the children keep digging?"
On the far wall, Noah also found a child's crayon drawing of four stick figures holding hands beneath a blue sky.
Claire had written two names beneath the smallest figures: Noah and Lily.

Vanessa’s shoes stopped inches from Noah’s face.
"Then we change their story too."
