Chapter 6: The Detective's First Break

Chapter 6: The Detective's First Break

The echo of running footsteps thundered through the hidden passage beneath the Blackwood mausoleum.

"Stop!" Detective Brian Keller shouted as he rushed down the narrow stone staircase.

His flashlight cut through the darkness, revealing an underground tunnel lined with aged brick walls. Dust swirled in the air, disturbed for the first time in years.

But the man with the bronze key had vanished.

Keller slowed to a stop.

"Damn it."

The tunnel split into two separate corridors.

There wasn't a single sound.

No footsteps.

No breathing.

Nothing.

One of the officers caught up with him.

"Which way?"

Keller looked at the ground.

Only one corridor showed fresh footprints.

"This one."

The officers sprinted forward.

Back above ground, Margaret stood beside the open staircase with remarkable composure.

Emily, Ethan, and Rachel had just arrived at the cemetery after receiving Keller's location.

Emily froze the moment she saw the hidden entrance beneath Charles's crypt.

"So my father-in-law was telling the truth."

Margaret turned slowly.

"I see you've been solving riddles."

Emily ignored her.

"You knew this place existed."

Margaret smiled faintly.

"I suspected."

"You tried to get here before me."

"I came to visit my husband."

Emily's eyes hardened.

"With two armed bodyguards?"

Margaret didn't answer.

Instead, she looked directly at Ethan.

"You've inserted yourself into matters that don't concern you."

Ethan stepped closer to Emily.

"They concern me now."

Margaret studied him for a moment.

"So you're the man who ruined everything."

"I saved a life."

"You delayed the inevitable."

Emily felt a chill run down her spine.

Those words didn't sound like a threat.

They sounded like certainty.

Deep inside the tunnel, Keller's team reached a massive steel door.

It was old but incredibly well preserved.

A small keyhole sat in the center.

"The bronze key," one officer muttered.

Keller examined the lock.

"No key."

The fleeing man had beaten them here.

But something was wrong.

The door was still closed.

"If he unlocked it..."

Keller whispered.

"...why didn't he go inside?"

Suddenly, one of the officers pointed at the floor.

"There."

Fresh drops of blood.

A trail led away from the door and deeper into another narrow passage.

Someone had been injured.

Meanwhile, Ethan noticed something unusual about the mausoleum.

Every member of the Blackwood family had a marble plaque...

Except Charles.

His crypt displayed only his name and dates.

No inscription.

No memorial quote.

Nothing.

Emily walked over.

"My father-in-law loved poetry."

"He always said he wanted a line from Shakespeare on his grave."

"So why isn't it here?" Ethan asked.

Emily looked closer.

The marble around Charles's name appeared newer than the surrounding stone.

Someone had replaced it.

Rachel gently brushed away years of dust from the lower edge.

"There are scratches."

Ethan crouched beside her.

Hidden beneath the marble dust were tiny engraved letters.

Look behind me.

Emily's heart pounded.

"What does that mean?"

Back inside the tunnel, Keller followed the blood trail until it ended abruptly.

A man lay unconscious against the wall.

The bronze key rested beside his hand.

Keller cautiously approached.

The stranger had been shot in the shoulder.

His pulse was weak but steady.

One officer searched his pockets.

"No wallet."

"No identification."

"No phone."

Professional.

Keller picked up the bronze key.

"So who shot you?"

The unconscious man slowly opened his eyes.

He grabbed Keller's jacket with surprising strength.

"Don't..."

He coughed violently.

"...open..."

"What?"

The man's lips trembled.

"The vault..."

His eyes widened with terror.

"...isn't..."

Before he could finish the sentence, his body went limp.

"Medic!"

An officer checked his pulse.

"He lost consciousness."

Keller stared at the bronze key.

Whatever waited behind that steel door...

Even the man trying to steal it had been terrified.

Outside, Emily carefully examined Charles's crypt.

"Help me."

Ethan and Rachel pushed against the marble slab.

It didn't move.

"There has to be another mechanism."

Emily glanced back at the journal.

Charles had always loved puzzles.

Nothing he did was ever simple.

She looked at the family crest carved into the front of the crypt.

A lion.

An oak tree.

Three stars.

Something caught her attention.

One of the stars looked newer than the others.

She pressed it.

A quiet click echoed inside the crypt.

The marble panel slowly slid sideways.

Behind it rested a small fireproof box.

Emily's hands shook as she lifted it out.

Margaret's face turned pale.

"No..."

Emily opened the box.

Inside lay a sealed envelope.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten letter.

The envelope read:

For Emily. Only Emily.

At that exact moment, Daniel's car sped into the cemetery.

He jumped out and ran toward the mausoleum.

"Emily!"

She turned.

"What are you doing here?"

"I got your message."

"I didn't send you one."

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

He pulled out his phone.

The text message was from Emily's number.

Meet me at Father's grave. Come alone. It's urgent.

Emily stared at the screen.

"I never wrote that."

Ethan's expression darkened.

"Someone cloned your phone."

Before anyone could react—

A deafening gunshot shattered the silence.

The bullet struck the stone pillar inches from Daniel's head.

"Down!" Keller yelled from the mausoleum entrance as officers rushed outside.

Another shot rang out.

Then another.

Guests visiting nearby graves screamed and ran for cover.

Ethan tackled Emily to the ground, shielding her body with his own.

Rachel pulled Daniel behind a stone monument.

Keller searched the tree line.

"I can't see the shooter!"

A fourth shot echoed across the cemetery.

This one hit the fireproof box.

The metal lid flew open.

The flash drive tumbled across the ground.

Everyone watched in horror as it rolled toward a storm drain.

Emily lunged forward instinctively.

"No!"

The flash drive balanced on the edge...

Then disappeared into the darkness below.

Silence fell.

Margaret closed her eyes for just a second.

Not in relief.

In frustration.

Because whoever the sniper was...

They hadn't been trying to kill Emily.

They had been trying to destroy whatever Charles had hidden for her.

May you like

And somehow...

They had missed.
