Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Family Vault

Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Family Vault
Rain continued to fall over the city long after midnight.

Emily lay awake in her hospital bed, unable to close her eyes for more than a few seconds. Every time she drifted toward sleep, she relived the fall—the rush of cold air, the screams below, and Margaret's emotionless face staring down at her.
The baby kicked gently.
Emily rested a hand on her stomach.
"I'm here," she whispered. "I'm not leaving you."
A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts.
Detective Brian Keller stepped into the room.
"I hope I'm not disturbing you."
Emily forced a tired smile.
"I wasn't sleeping anyway."
Keller pulled a chair beside her bed.
"I've spent the last four hours interviewing everyone who attended the gala."
"And?"
"Nobody claims to have seen what happened on the balcony."
Emily wasn't surprised.
"The balcony was almost empty."
"Almost?"
She nodded.
"There was a waitress nearby about ten minutes before it happened."
Keller wrote it down immediately.
"Do you remember her name?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"Anything about her?"
"She looked nervous... like she wasn't supposed to be there."
Keller closed his notebook.
"That's more than I had five minutes ago."
As he stood to leave, Emily stopped him.
"Detective..."
"If someone wanted to hide evidence... how easy would it be?"
Keller looked at her carefully.
"Depends on who's trying."
"What if they were extremely wealthy?"
His expression grew serious.
"Then I'd advise keeping any important evidence somewhere no one knows about."
Emily instinctively glanced toward her handbag.
Keller noticed.
He didn't ask what she was hiding.
Instead, he simply said,
"Whatever you're protecting... don't tell anyone unless you're absolutely certain you can trust them."
Then he walked away.
The following morning, Blackwood Manor appeared calm from the outside.
Inside, it was anything but.
Margaret stood in the dining room while her son paced furiously.
"Mother, the police think you tried to kill Emily."
Margaret calmly sipped her coffee.
"They're doing their job."
Daniel slammed both hands onto the table.
"Did you push her?"
Margaret looked directly into his eyes.
"What do you believe?"
Daniel hesitated.
"I... don't know."
She stood and gently adjusted his crooked tie, just as she had done when he was a little boy.
"I've protected this family your entire life."
"I know."
"Everything I have ever done has been for you."
Daniel looked away.
"You always taught me family comes first."
"Exactly."
She placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"And right now, your wife is accusing your own mother of attempted murder."
Daniel's face filled with conflict.
Margaret leaned closer.
"Ask yourself one question."
"If I truly wanted Emily dead..."
She paused.
"...would she still be alive?"
Daniel had no answer.
Across town, Ethan Cross sat in his apartment studying Charles Blackwood's journal.
Emily had reluctantly allowed him to borrow it for a few hours after he promised to make copies.
The journal was far more disturbing than either of them had expected.
Charles had documented years of suspicious business deals.
Bribes.
Shell companies.
False property transfers.
Payments to public officials.
Every page contained dates, signatures, and account numbers.
Then Ethan reached the final section.
His breathing slowed.
One sentence was circled three times.
The money isn't the real secret.
He turned the page.
Another handwritten note followed.
The vault contains proof of everything.
Ethan frowned.
"What vault?"
The next page had been ripped out.
So had the one after it.
Someone had deliberately removed them.
He continued reading.
The final entry was dated just three days before Charles died.
If anything happens to me, don't trust Margaret. And whatever you do... never let Daniel discover the truth before he's ready.
Ethan stared at the sentence.
Ready for what?
Later that afternoon, Emily was discharged from the hospital.
Doctors insisted she avoid stress, but stress seemed impossible to escape.
As Ethan drove her away from the hospital, she looked out the passenger window.
"I can't go back to the mansion."
"I know."
"I don't even know where to go."
"You can stay at my sister's guesthouse."
Emily turned toward him.
"You barely know me."
"I know enough."
"You could get dragged into this."
Ethan smiled.
"I think that happened the moment I caught you."
For the first time since the gala, Emily laughed.
It felt strange.
Almost unfamiliar.
Meanwhile, Detective Keller received a call from the forensic lab.
"The fabric matches Margaret Blackwood's gown."
"I expected that."
"But there's something else."
"What?"
"We found skin cells underneath Mrs. Blackwood's fingernails."
Keller straightened in his chair.
"Whose?"
"They belong to Emily."
"So they struggled."
"It certainly looks that way."
Keller thanked the technician before hanging up.
Attempted murder was beginning to look far less like an accident.
That evening, a black SUV quietly pulled into the underground parking garage beneath Blackwood Corporation.
Margaret stepped out alone.
She entered a private elevator requiring both a keycard and fingerprint scan.
The elevator descended far below the building's public floors.
When the doors opened, she entered a concrete corridor lined with steel security doors.
At the very end stood an enormous reinforced vault.
She placed her hand on a biometric scanner.
ACCESS DENIED
Margaret frowned.
She tried again.
ACCESS DENIED
"What?"
A security screen flashed another message.
SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED
Margaret's face lost all color.
Only two people had ever possessed the second authorization.
Charles...
and Daniel.
She whispered under her breath.
"He changed it before he died."
At the same moment, Ethan's phone rang.
It was Detective Keller.
"I think Charles left more than a journal."
"What do you mean?"
"I searched old construction permits."
"And?"
"When Blackwood Tower was built twenty years ago..."
"There was an underground level that doesn't appear on any official blueprint."
Ethan looked down at the journal.
His eyes stopped on the sentence about the vault.
"You found it."
"I found evidence that it exists."
Keller lowered his voice.
"But here's the strange part."
"The hidden level was registered under a completely different company."
"What company?"
Keller slowly read the name.
"'Hawthorne Holdings.'"
Ethan's eyes widened.
He had seen that name before.
Not in the journal.
On the business card of the man who had invited him to the gala.
Charles Blackwood's former business partner.
Suddenly, another memory surfaced.
The man had left the gala...
less than five minutes before Emily was pushed.
Ethan's pulse quickened.
Maybe the attack hadn't been planned by Margaret alone.
May you like
Maybe someone else had been watching from the shadows all along.
And somewhere beneath Blackwood Tower, behind a vault no one could open, lay a secret powerful enough to destroy an empire—and perhaps expose the true mastermind behind Charles Blackwood's death.
