Chapter 16: The Arrest

Chapter 16: The Arrest
Smoke lingered over the warehouse long after Victor Sloan disappeared.
Federal agents searched every nearby street, warehouse, and alley.
Nothing.
It was as if Victor had vanished into thin air.
Agent Laura Bennett lowered her radio in frustration.

"He had an escape route."
Detective Brian Keller nodded.
"He planned this meeting from the beginning."
Ethan, nursing a bruised shoulder, walked over to Michael.
"You all right?"
Michael looked down at the sealed envelope in his hands.
"I don't know."
"It has my name on it..."
"...but I've never met Charles Blackwood."
Ethan placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You may not have met him."
"But he spent twenty-six years trying to find you."
An hour later, everyone gathered in a secure conference room at FBI headquarters.
Present were:
Emily
Daniel
Michael
Ethan
Detective Keller
Agent Bennett
The envelope lay unopened in the center of the table.
Michael hesitated.
"What if this changes everything?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"I think everything already changed."
Michael slowly broke the wax seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small brass key.
The letter began:
My Dear Son,
If this letter has reached you, then I finally found you... even if I wasn't alive to tell you myself.
I don't know your name anymore.
I only know the name your birth mother whispered before she died.
Michael.
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
Charles continued:
You owe me nothing.
I wasn't there for your first steps.
Your first day of school.
Or your birthdays.
But not a single year passed without me searching for you.
Daniel quietly wiped away a tear.
Charles wrote:
If Daniel is beside you, know this:
Neither of you is more my son than the other.
One was born into my life.
The other was chosen by my heart.
I have loved you equally.
Silence filled the room.
Emily reached for Daniel's hand.
Michael stared at the final paragraph.
The brass key opens the last place Victor never discovered.
Everything you need is already waiting there.
Agent Bennett picked up the small key.
"There can't be many places left."
Ethan studied it carefully.
The key carried the same lion crest carved into the Blackwood family mausoleum.
Then he remembered something.
"The lake."
Everyone looked at him.
"The old boathouse."
Emily frowned.
"Charles took Daniel fishing there every summer."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"He never let anyone else inside."
Within the hour, federal agents surrounded the abandoned boathouse on Lake Ash.
It appeared ordinary.
Weathered wood.
Broken windows.
An old dock extending into the lake.
Michael unlocked the rusted door with the brass key.
It fit perfectly.
Inside, dust covered decades-old fishing equipment.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Until Ethan noticed deep scratches on the wooden floor.
"This moves."
Several agents helped slide aside a heavy workbench.
Hidden beneath it was a steel hatch.
Keller opened it carefully.
A narrow staircase descended underground.
Rachel whispered,
"Charles certainly loved secret rooms."
The underground chamber was surprisingly modern.
Climate-controlled.
Rows of filing cabinets lined the walls.
A secure server hummed quietly in one corner.
Charles had built an entire hidden archive beneath the boathouse.
Emily looked around in amazement.
"He kept everything."
Financial records.
Personal journals.
Photographs.
Corporate contracts.
Even original surveillance backups.
Agent Bennett immediately began cataloging the evidence.
Then one cabinet caught Michael's attention.
It bore a handwritten label.
Family.
He opened it.
Inside were twenty-six birthday cards.
One for every year of his life.
None had ever been mailed.
Each one was written by Charles.
Michael could no longer hold back his tears.
"He never forgot me."
Daniel wrapped an arm around his brother's shoulder.
"No."
"He never did."
Meanwhile, across the city, Victor Sloan entered a private penthouse overlooking the skyline.
He poured himself a glass of whiskey.
His calm demeanor had vanished.
One of his associates stood nearby.
"They found the archive."
Victor remained silent.
"They'll have enough evidence to indict everyone."
Victor finally spoke.
"No."
The associate looked confused.
"No?"
"They'll indict Margaret."
"What about you?"
Victor smiled faintly.
"They still don't know the truth."
At that exact moment, Agent Bennett called Keller over.
"You need to see this."
She held up a sealed legal document recovered from Charles's archive.
Its title read:
Affidavit of Confession
Signed by:
Margaret Blackwood.
Dated:
Three months before Charles's death.
Keller quickly opened it.
The first sentence made his heart stop.
I confess that I knowingly participated in concealing the kidnapping of Baby B.
Emily gasped.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Michael stared silently at the page.
But the confession continued.
I did not plan the kidnapping.
I acted out of fear after Victor Sloan threatened to expose Daniel's adoption and destroy our family.
Keller looked up.
"So Margaret covered it up..."
Emily finished the thought.
"...but Victor orchestrated it."
Agent Bennett nodded.
"That's what it looks like."
Just then, Keller's phone rang.
It was one of the surveillance teams stationed outside Blackwood Tower.
"Detective."
"We've got movement."
"What kind?"
"Margaret Blackwood just left the building."
"Where is she going?"
The officer's voice grew urgent.
"She's driving straight toward Victor Sloan's penthouse."
Keller immediately stood.
"Move!"
Federal agents rushed from the boathouse.
If Margaret and Victor met before they arrived...
Twenty-six years of secrets could disappear forever.
Less than fifteen minutes later, FBI vehicles surrounded Victor's luxury high-rise.
Margaret's black sedan was parked outside.
Agent Bennett led the tactical team to the penthouse.
"Federal agents!"
"Open the door!"
No response.
She nodded to the breaching team.
The reinforced door burst inward.
Inside, the penthouse was eerily quiet.
Victor Sloan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows with his hands behind his back.
Margaret sat in a nearby chair.
She looked exhausted.
Defeated.
Victor slowly turned toward the agents.
"I've been expecting you."
Agent Bennett raised her badge.
"Victor Sloan, you're under arrest for conspiracy, kidnapping, attempted murder, racketeering, and multiple counts of fraud."
Victor smiled calmly.
"I'll come peacefully."
As agents handcuffed him, Margaret suddenly spoke.
"Detective..."
Keller turned toward her.
"I'll testify."
The room fell silent.
Margaret looked down at her trembling hands.
"I'm done protecting him."
Victor's smile finally disappeared.
May you like
For the first time in twenty-six years...
He looked genuinely afraid.
