Chapter 2: The Man Who Caught Her

Chapter 2: The Man Who Caught Her

The flashing lights of police cruisers illuminated the front of Blackwood Manor as officers secured the property. The glamorous charity gala had transformed into an active crime scene within minutes. Guests who had arrived expecting champagne and speeches now stood in stunned silence, answering questions from detectives.

Emily lay on the stretcher beneath a warm blanket while paramedics monitored both her and the baby.

"The heartbeat is steady," one medic assured her. "Your baby is strong."

Emily closed her eyes in relief, but her body continued to tremble. Every time she replayed the moment on the balcony, she saw Margaret's cold eyes and felt those hands shoving her toward certain death.

A shadow appeared beside the ambulance.

The man who had caught her.

He still wore the charcoal-gray suit from the gala, though the sleeve had torn during the impact. A scrape along his forehead had begun to bleed, yet he seemed completely unconcerned about his own injuries.

Emily looked at him carefully.

"I never thanked you."

"You don't have to."

"You saved both of us."

He offered a faint smile.

"I'm glad I was close enough."

Before Emily could ask another question, Detective Brian Keller approached.

"Ma'am, I'd like to ask a few questions while everything is still fresh."

Emily nodded.

Keller opened his notebook.

"Can you tell me exactly what happened on the balcony?"

Emily took a slow breath.

"Margaret Blackwood pushed me."

"Did anyone else see it?"

"No. We were alone."

"What were you arguing about?"

Emily hesitated.

Her hand instinctively moved toward her handbag resting beside the stretcher.

If she mentioned Charles Blackwood's journal now, the police would likely seize it as evidence.

But if Margaret had people inside the department...

The journal could disappear forever.

"It was... a family disagreement," Emily answered carefully.

Detective Keller frowned.

"Mrs. Blackwood claims you lost your balance."

Emily stared directly into his eyes.

"I didn't fall."

"I was pushed."

Inside the mansion, Margaret Blackwood remained astonishingly calm.

She sat in the library with her attorney beside her while detectives searched the balcony.

"Mrs. Blackwood," Keller said, entering the room, "your daughter-in-law has accused you of attempted murder."

Margaret sighed deeply.

"This is heartbreaking."

"You deny touching her?"

"Of course."

"We recovered a torn piece of fabric from her hand."

Margaret glanced at the damaged sleeve of her navy evening gown.

Without missing a beat, she smiled.

"She grabbed me while she was falling. Naturally, the fabric tore."

Keller studied her expression.

"You seem remarkably composed."

"I've spent thirty-five years managing crises, Detective."

Her attorney leaned forward.

"My client has answered your questions."

Keller closed his notebook.

"For now."

As he turned to leave, Margaret's smile slowly disappeared.

The moment the door closed, she looked at her personal assistant.

"Find Daniel."

Daniel Blackwood arrived nearly an hour later.

His expensive sports car screeched into the driveway.

He rushed toward the ambulance where Emily sat wrapped in blankets.

"Oh my God..."

He dropped to his knees beside her.

"Emily, are you okay?"

She looked at her husband with tear-filled eyes.

"Your mother tried to kill me."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

"She pushed me."

He stared at her for several long seconds before slowly shaking his head.

"Emily..."

"I know you're scared, but you must be confused."

Emily felt her heart sink.

"You don't believe me."

"My mother would never—"

"She did!"

Several officers glanced toward them.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Please. Not here."

Emily couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"I almost died."

"You've been under a lot of stress lately."

Those words hit her harder than the fall itself.

"They're making you emotional."

Emily pulled her hand away.

"So that's it."

"You've already chosen her."

Daniel looked genuinely torn.

"I just need proof."

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Proof?"

She slowly opened her hand.

"The fabric wasn't enough?"

Daniel stared at the evidence bag in Detective Keller's hand.

His expression changed slightly.

But only for a moment.

"There has to be another explanation."

Emily looked away.

For the first time since they had met in college, she realized she no longer recognized the man she had married.

Across the driveway, the stranger quietly watched the exchange.

Detective Keller approached him.

"I never got your statement."

The man handed over his identification.

"My name is Ethan Cross."

Keller glanced at the card.

His eyebrows lifted.

"Former FBI?"

Ethan nodded.

"I retired two years ago."

"What brings you to the gala?"

"I was invited by Charles Blackwood's former business partner."

"You caught Mrs. Blackwood from twenty feet away."

"I got lucky."

Keller didn't believe in luck.

Not after seeing Ethan's precise movements.

"You've done that before."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"Training helps."

Keller studied him.

"Would you be willing to consult on this case?"

"I'm not FBI anymore."

"I'm asking as a witness."

Ethan looked toward Emily.

She sat alone now.

Daniel had walked back inside the mansion.

"I'll help if she wants me to."

Later that night, Emily was admitted to the hospital for observation.

Doctors confirmed she had escaped with bruises, minor injuries, and severe emotional trauma.

Miraculously, the baby remained healthy.

The hospital room became quiet after midnight.

Rain tapped softly against the windows.

Emily couldn't sleep.

Every creak in the hallway made her jump.

Around one o'clock, someone knocked gently.

"Come in."

The door opened.

Ethan stepped inside carrying a small paper bag.

"I brought coffee."

Emily laughed softly.

"I don't think the nurses will let me have any."

"I figured."

He pulled out herbal tea instead.

"I guessed wrong on purpose."

For the first time that day, Emily smiled.

"Thank you."

They sat in silence for a moment.

Finally Ethan spoke.

"You didn't tell Detective Keller everything."

Emily looked at him cautiously.

"What makes you think that?"

"Because people don't try to kill someone over a family argument."

She remained silent.

"There was something else."

Emily studied his face.

Unlike everyone else, he wasn't pushing her.

He was simply waiting.

Slowly, she reached for her handbag.

She removed the worn leather journal.

Ethan immediately understood its importance.

"What is it?"

"My father-in-law wrote this."

She handed it to him.

He read only the first page.

His expression changed instantly.

"This..."

He looked back at Emily.

"...is motive."

"You believe me?"

"I believe someone wanted this hidden."

Emily lowered her voice.

"I don't know who I can trust anymore."

Ethan closed the journal.

"You can trust me."

She wanted to believe him.

But after everything that had happened, trust came with a price.

Across town, Margaret entered Charles Blackwood's old study for the first time in months.

She searched every drawer.

Every bookshelf.

Every cabinet.

The hidden compartment behind the antique shelf stood open.

Empty.

She slammed it shut.

"So..."

she whispered to herself.

"She took it."

Her phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

"Is it done?" the caller asked.

Margaret's voice turned icy.

"No."

There was a long silence.

"You told me there would be no survivors."

Margaret glanced toward the rain-covered window.

"There was... an unexpected interruption."

"You know what happens if those documents become public."

"I'll handle it."

"You'd better."

The line went dead.

Margaret stood perfectly still.

For the first time in years...

She wasn't the most dangerous person involved.

May you like

Somewhere in the shadows, someone even more powerful was waiting for the journal to disappear forever.

And now, Emily had become the only person standing between them and a secret worth killing for.
