Chapter 9 - The Lie Dante Told.

The photograph showed the kitchen exactly as it looked now.
Same bowl of lemons on the island.
Same stack of mail near Rosa's phone.
Same blue ceramic mug Claire had used that morning.
Detective Ruiz emailed the image to Dante.
Claire stared at the timestamp.
She had been upstairs showering.
Dante had been in the study.
Matteo had been eating cereal ten feet from the camera.
"Who took it?" Claire asked.
Ruiz's voice came through the speaker.
"No metadata beyond the timestamp."
"Could the time be fake?"
"Possible."
Dante gave Claire a look.
She ignored him.
"But the mug," Claire said.
"What about it?" Ruiz asked.
"I used that mug yesterday morning."
Silence.
"Then whoever took the photo was inside while you were there."
Rosa crossed herself quietly.
Dante's face became unreadable.
"Everyone out."
Claire turned.
"What?"
"We're moving locations."
"Where?"
"Somewhere no one knows."
"Apparently people know everywhere you go."
"Claire."
"I'm not trying to be difficult."
"You are naturally gifted."
"Thank you."
"That was not praise."
Despite the fear pressing against her ribs, Claire almost smiled.
Then she saw Matteo in the doorway.
He had heard enough to be scared.
Dante saw him too.
His entire posture softened.
"Hey."
Matteo looked at the adults.
"Are we leaving?"
"For a little while."
"Because someone got inside?"
Dante paused.
Claire watched him choose truth over comfort.
"Yes."
Matteo nodded slowly.
"Okay."
He went upstairs to pack.
Claire looked at Dante.
"That was good."
"What?"
"Telling him the truth."
Dante's gaze held hers.
"I'm trying."
They moved within thirty minutes.
Not to another mansion.
To an apartment above a closed architectural firm in River North.
The entrance was through an underground garage.
No staff except Rosa.
No visible security except two men Claire did not recognize.
Dante said that was intentional.
"Adrian picked the old team," he explained.
"These men report to my sister."
"You trust her?"
"With Matteo's life."
"That's the first straightforward security answer you've given me."
"Treasure it."
The apartment was modern and spare.
Concrete walls.
Large windows with blackout shades.
A long dining table nobody seemed to use.
Matteo chose a room near Rosa.
Claire took the smallest guest room because she refused to let anyone assign her the largest one.
Dante did not argue.
That worried her too.
By late afternoon, Ruiz arrived with a forensic copy of the drive.
"I'm technically not here," she said.
Dante nodded.
"Neither are we."
"That is usually how people like you create problems."
Claire took the drive.
"Can we focus?"
Ruiz looked at her.
"See why I like her?" she asked Dante.
"Everyone likes her."
Claire looked at him.
The words had come too easily.
Dante seemed to realize it and looked away.
Ruiz opened the files on an offline laptop.
The drive contained years of records.
Lakeshore loans.
Payments from judges, contractors, union officials, restaurant owners, and developers.
Some names were marked with red dots.
Others with blue.
A separate folder contained photographs used for leverage.
Claire disliked those most.
People entering hotels.
People meeting strangers.
People looking frightened through telephoto lenses.
"She doesn't just collect debt," Claire said.
"She collects weakness," Ruiz replied.
Dante's eyes stayed on the screen.
"Victor did the same thing."
Ruiz opened a document labeled LUCIA M.
Dante went still.
Claire saw his hand tighten against the table.
The document contained transfers from the Moretti Foundation to shell charities.
Lucia had added notes beside several transactions.
Investigate Cross.
Ask Carlo about authorization.
Claire leaned closer.
"Carlo?"
Dante's face hardened.
"My cousin."
"Matteo's Uncle Carlo."
"Yes."
Ruiz scrolled.
There were more notes.
Carlo approved three transfers.
Carlo met Victor privately.
Carlo says Dante doesn't know.
Claire looked at Dante.
"Did you know?"
"No."
"Could Lucia have been wrong?"
"She rarely was."
Ruiz opened another file.
A scanned letter appeared.
The date was four days before Lucia's death.
The letter was addressed to Dante.
It began with three words.
If anything happens.
Dante stopped breathing.
Claire looked at him.
"You've never seen this."
"No."
Ruiz read silently.
Her expression tightened.
"You should read it."
Dante did.
Claire watched his face instead of the screen.
The letter said Lucia had discovered a partnership between Victor Cross and Carlo Moretti.
It said they had been moving foundation funds, buying debt, and using private information to force business owners into favorable contracts.
It said Lucia believed someone inside Dante's security operation was reporting her movements.
At the end, she wrote that she was afraid Dante would react with violence if he learned the truth too soon.
Please choose Matteo over revenge.
Claire looked away.
Dante sat completely still.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Ruiz said, "There is more."
Another file contained an audio recording.
The quality was poor.
Two men spoke in a parking garage.
One voice belonged to Victor Cross.
The other was harder to identify.
Claire listened.
"She knows about the transfers," Victor said.
The second man answered.
"Then she needs to stop digging."
Dante closed his eyes.
Claire's skin prickled.
The second voice sounded older.
Smooth.
Familiar.
She had heard it only once.
That morning at the safe house.
Carlo.
Ruiz paused the recording.
"Can you identify him?"
Dante looked at the table.
"Yes."
The word was almost inaudible.
Claire watched a decade of certainty collapse behind his eyes.
Carlo was family.
Business partner.
Uncle to Matteo.
A man who had apparently stood beside Dante after Lucia's funeral while helping hide the truth of what she had discovered.
Dante stood suddenly.
"Where is he?"
Ruiz closed the laptop.
"No."
"Detective."
"You are not going after him."
"Where is he?"
"We build a case."
Dante laughed coldly.
"A case."
"Yes."
"He helped kill my wife."
"You don't know that yet."
"I know his voice."
"You know he told Victor she should stop digging."
Ruiz stood.
"That is not the same as ordering a death."
Dante walked toward the door.
Claire moved in front of him.
"Move."
"No."
"Not now, Claire."
"Especially now."
His eyes were almost black.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain it instead of walking out."
"He stood beside me at her funeral."
Dante's voice broke on the last word.
The room went silent.
Claire's anger disappeared.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
"You're right."
She kept her voice low.
"But Lucia asked you to choose Matteo over revenge."
Dante flinched as if the letter had been read aloud again.
"Do not use her words against me."
"I'm not."
"It sounds like it."
"I'm reminding you why she wrote them."
He stared at her.
Claire did not step aside.
"If you go to Carlo now, you warn Evelyn."
"I don't care."
"Yes, you do."
"Claire."
"You care because Matteo is still in this."
That stopped him.
She continued.
"And if Carlo is part of the leak, he knows where your people are, what they do, and how you react."
Dante's breathing slowed.
"He knows you will come for him."
Ruiz nodded.
"She's right."
Dante looked at Claire.
"You enjoy hearing that too much."
"Immensely."
A tiny fracture appeared in his rage.
Enough.
He stepped away from the door.
Ruiz reopened the laptop.
"Good."
Dante sat.
"Don't say good."
Claire almost smiled.
Ruiz opened the next file.
It contained a recent photograph.
Carlo stood beside Evelyn Cross outside a private club.
The date was three weeks earlier.
Claire leaned closer.
A third person was visible in the background.
Michael.
Dante stared at the screen.
"Your ex is deeper than he told you."
Claire felt the old hurt turn into something harder.
"Then we find out how deep."
Her phone vibrated on the table.
A text from an unknown number appeared.
IF YOU WANT MICHAEL ALIVE, COME WITHOUT MORETTI.
Below it was an address.
Claire's first response was not compassion.
It was anger.
Michael had created so much of this.
Part of her wanted to throw the phone onto the table and let him solve one problem without using her life as collateral.
Then she looked at the photograph again.
Fear had hollowed his face.
He looked human.
That was inconvenient.
Dante watched her.
"You don't owe him rescue."
Claire looked up.
"I know."
"Then don't confuse guilt with obligation."
The sentence surprised her.
"That's unusually healthy advice from you."
"Rosa says I'm improving."
"Rosa is optimistic."
A faint smile touched his face.
Claire looked down at Michael again.
"I don't want to save our relationship."
"I know."
"I don't even know if I want to save him from the consequences of what he did."
"Then what do you want?"
Claire thought about Matteo beneath her at Aurelio's.
She had not known his name.
She had not asked whether he deserved help.
"I want him alive long enough to answer for it."
Dante nodded once.
"That I understand."
Ruiz examined the message header.
The sender had bounced through multiple prepaid numbers.
No location.
No useful subscriber data.
But the photograph contained a clue.
A faded red logo on the wall behind Michael.
Ruiz enlarged it.
CHICAGO STAR PRINTING.
The company had closed nine years earlier.
The address matched the one in the text.
Claire looked at Ruiz.
"So they really want me there."
Ruiz nodded.
May you like
"Which means we have time to decide how badly we disappoint them."
And a photograph of Michael tied to a chair.
