Chapter 10 - The Address At The Bottom Of The Message.

Claire read the text twice.
IF YOU WANT MICHAEL ALIVE, COME WITHOUT MORETTI.
The address belonged to an abandoned printing plant on the west side.
The photograph beneath it showed Michael sitting beneath a bare bulb with his wrists secured to the arms of a metal chair.
His face looked exhausted.
One side of his shirt was torn.
There was no visible blood.
Claire was grateful for that small mercy and angry at herself for feeling grateful at all.
Dante reached for her phone.
She moved it away.
"Don't."
"Let me see it."
"I can read."
"Claire."
"If I hand it to you, you're going to decide what happens next before I get a vote."
His expression hardened.
"Someone is using him to pull you into an empty building."
"I know."
"Then there is no vote."
Claire stood.
"There is always a vote when I'm the bait."
Detective Ruiz lifted a hand.
"Both of you stop."
Dante looked at her.
Ruiz did not care.
"This is useful."
Claire stared.
"A kidnapping threat is useful?"
"A demand creates structure."
Ruiz took out her notebook.
"They need you alive long enough to bring you somewhere."
"Comforting."
"It means we can control part of the approach."
Dante shook his head.
"She is not going."
Claire crossed her arms.
"You need to retire that sentence."
"Not tonight."
Ruiz looked between them.
"Nobody is walking into that plant alone."
Claire exhaled.
"Good."
Dante stared at her.
"You were considering it."
"For about six minutes."
His eyes narrowed.
Claire could not help herself.
"Then I reviewed the evidence."
For half a second, he recognized his own words from the hospital.
Ruiz almost smiled.
Dante did not.
"Not funny."
"A little funny."
The plan took forty minutes.
Ruiz contacted a tactical unit she trusted.
Dante objected to nearly every step.
He wanted his own people around the perimeter.
Ruiz allowed two unmarked vehicles and no more.
Claire would enter through the loading dock wearing a small audio transmitter beneath her sweater.
Police would be inside the surrounding buildings before she arrived.
Dante would stay in the command van.
That last part nearly ended negotiations.
"They asked for me without you," Claire told him.
"Which is exactly why I should be close."
"Close is not standing beside me."
"You were injured forty-eight hours ago."
"I remember."
"You can barely lift your left arm."
"I can lift it enough to point out how irritating you are."
Ruiz pinched the bridge of her nose.
"I am starting to understand why organized crime cases take years."
Dante finally agreed when Claire threatened to refuse the entire operation if he did not.
The printing plant sat behind a chain-link fence beneath elevated tracks.
Most of the windows were boarded.
Graffiti covered the brick walls.
Rain had started again, thin and cold.
Claire stood inside the police van while Ruiz attached the transmitter.
Dante watched from the opposite wall.
He had been silent for five minutes.
Claire preferred him argumentative.
"Say it," she said.
"Say what?"
"Whatever you've been not saying."
His eyes met hers.
"Don't be brave."
The words surprised her.
"What?"
"You were brave at Aurelio's because you had no time to think."
He stepped closer but stopped an arm's length away.
"Tonight you have time."
Claire waited.
"If anything feels wrong, leave."
"It already feels wrong."
"More wrong."
"Very scientific."
His face did not soften.
"Promise me."
Claire looked at him.
There was no command in his voice now.
Only fear.
Not for himself.
That made the promise harder.
"I promise I won't confuse courage with stupidity."
"That was carefully worded."
"I'm learning from lawyers."
Ruiz handed Claire a small earpiece.
"We hear everything."
Claire nodded.
She stepped out into the rain.
The walk from the van to the loading dock was only sixty yards.
It felt like a mile.
The metal door was unlocked.
Claire pushed it open.
Darkness waited inside.
"Michael?"
Her voice echoed.
A light came on twenty feet ahead.
Michael sat exactly as he had in the photograph.
His head lifted.
"Claire."
She stopped.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Who did this?"
His eyes moved past her toward the door.
"You came alone?"
Claire felt the first wrong thing.
Not more wrong.
Different wrong.
Michael sounded afraid, but not surprised.
"Who did this?" she repeated.
He swallowed.
"You shouldn't have come."
"Then why send the message?"
Michael looked at her.
Something in his face collapsed.
"I didn't."
Claire's pulse jumped.
In her ear, Ruiz whispered.
"Hold position."
A slow clap came from the shadows.
Claire turned.
Evelyn Cross stepped into the light.
Cream coat.
White gloves.
No visible weapon.
She looked exactly like her photograph and far more dangerous in person because she seemed completely relaxed.
"Claire Bennett," she said.
"You have become expensive."
Claire kept her breathing steady.
"You broke into my apartment."
"Someone did."
"You stole my hospital evidence."
"Someone did."
"You really like technical answers."
Evelyn smiled.
"Dante does too."
Claire felt cold.
"What do you want?"
"The drive."
"I don't have it."
"I know."
That answer frightened her.
"Then why am I here?"
Evelyn walked slowly toward Michael.
"Because Dante has it through his police friend."
Claire kept her face neutral.
"So ask him."
"Dante doesn't exchange things."
Evelyn looked at Claire.
"But he might exchange something for you."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"You think I'm valuable to him."
"He moved you into a protected house."
"Because I saved his son."
"Exactly."
"That doesn't make me valuable."
Evelyn's smile sharpened.
"You still don't understand men like Dante."
Claire thought of him in the van, asking her not to be brave.
"Maybe you don't."
The smile disappeared.
In her ear, Ruiz whispered.
"Two additional heat signatures east side."
Claire kept Evelyn talking.
"Why Lucia?"
The name changed everything.
Evelyn's eyes went flat.
Michael looked at Claire in alarm.
"Don't."
Claire ignored him.
"She found your money."
"Lucia found pieces."
"Carlo helped you."
Evelyn's expression became almost amused.
"Carlo helped himself."
"Did you cause Lucia's crash?"
Michael closed his eyes.
Evelyn stepped closer.
"You ask questions with no understanding of the answers."
"Try me."
For the first time, irritation touched Evelyn's face.
"Lucia was warned."
Claire felt Dante's imagined presence through the transmitter.
Somewhere behind the operation, he was hearing every word.
"By Carlo?"
Evelyn looked toward Michael.
"Your former fiance was easier to manage."
Claire's jaw tightened.
"He was desperate."
"Desperate people are useful."
Michael stared at the floor.
Claire saw shame on his face.
"Did he know about the glass?"
Evelyn shrugged.
"He knew enough."
"That's not an answer."
"It is the only one you get."
She reached into her coat.
Ruiz's voice snapped in Claire's ear.
"Move back."
Claire stepped sideways.
Evelyn removed a phone.
On its screen was a live video feed.
Matteo sat at the River North apartment table doing homework.
Rosa stood behind him.
Claire stopped breathing.
Evelyn let the image remain on the screen.
"You see how easy this becomes when everyone accepts what they are worth."
Claire looked at Matteo's face on the video.
"People aren't price tags."
"Everyone has a price."
"That's something people say when they need to believe money explains everything."
Evelyn's expression cooled.
"You think Dante is different?"
"I think Dante has spent years believing he can pay every cost himself."
Claire kept her voice steady.
"That's not the same thing."
Michael looked between them.
"Claire, just give her what she wants."
Claire turned toward him.
"That advice is how we got here."
He flinched.
"I was trying to survive."
"So was I."
Claire's anger sharpened.
"The difference is you kept choosing someone else to absorb the bill."
Michael looked down.
Evelyn smiled.
"Beautiful."
Claire looked at her.
"What?"
"You finally understand him, but you still came."
"Because caring whether someone gets hurt isn't the same as giving them control."
Evelyn's smile faded.
That distinction seemed to irritate her.
Her entire system depended on people believing fear, debt, love, and obligation were the same currency.
Claire was beginning to see that they were not.
In her earpiece, Ruiz whispered that officers had found a second entrance.
Claire kept her eyes on Evelyn.
"So what exactly do you want Dante to do?"
Evelyn lifted the phone.
"First, he gives me the drive."
"And then?"
"Then he learns how expensive gratitude can become."
Claire's skin went cold.
May you like
Evelyn watched her reaction.
"Now," she said softly, "we negotiate."
