Chapter 8 - The Man Standing Behind Them.

Nobody moved.

The warehouse hummed around them with the distant mechanical sound of refrigeration units and fluorescent lights.

Claire looked from the ledger to Adrian.

The man who had spent two days checking doors, tracking phones, and standing between her and possible danger now looked as if someone had removed the floor beneath him.

Dante did not reach for him.

That was the first thing Claire noticed.

He simply turned.

"Explain."

Adrian's eyes stayed on the page.

"I can't."

Dante's voice dropped.

"That is not the answer you want to give me."

Ruiz stepped between them before the moment could become something else.

"Nobody is doing this here."

Dante's gaze remained on Adrian.

"Detective."

"The ledger is evidence."

Ruiz pointed at the open page.

"A name in a book is not proof of a crime."

Claire looked at Adrian.

"Is it your name?"

He finally met her eyes.

"Yes."

"Did you take money from Evelyn Cross?"

A muscle moved in his jaw.

"Yes."

Dante went completely still.

Claire felt the air change.

Adrian continued quickly.

"Not for what you think."

"Then tell us what to think," Claire said.

He looked at Dante.

"My daughter needed surgery three years ago."

The words landed softly.

"Insurance denied part of it."

Dante's expression did not move.

"You came to me."

"I did."

"I paid it."

"You paid the hospital."

Adrian swallowed.

"There were other expenses."

"How much?"

"Eighty thousand."

Dante stared at him.

"And you borrowed it from Cross."

"I didn't know who she was at first."

Ruiz crossed her arms.

"When did you learn?"

"When she asked for access."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"To Dante's systems?"

Adrian nodded once.

"I refused."

Dante's voice was quiet.

"Did you?"

Adrian looked wounded by the question.

"Yes."

"Then how did she loop the camera?"

"I don't know."

Dante took one step toward him.

Ruiz blocked the movement with her body.

"Mr. Moretti."

Claire watched Adrian.

His hands were open.

His breathing was fast.

He looked terrified, but not like someone caught in a lie.

He looked like someone watching years of silence collapse at once.

"When was your last payment?" Claire asked.

Adrian looked at her.

"Eight months ago."

"Why did it stop?"

"I paid the principal."

"And Cross?"

"Said the interest continued."

Ruiz nodded grimly.

"Classic leverage structure."

"She wanted something instead," Claire said.

Adrian's silence answered.

"What?"

"Travel schedules."

Dante's face hardened.

"Mine?"

"At first."

"You gave them to her."

"No."

"Adrian."

"I gave her old schedules."

Dante laughed once without humor.

"You decided that distinction mattered?"

"I was buying time."

"With my family's movements."

"Old movements."

"My son's movements were on those calendars."

Adrian looked down.

"I know."

Claire saw Dante's control thin.

She stepped into his line of sight.

"Don't."

His eyes moved to her.

"Move."

"No."

"Claire."

"If he is involved, the detective can prove it."

"He sold information about my son."

"He said he sold old schedules."

"And you believe him?"

"I believe we don't know enough."

Dante stared at her.

The old instinct in him was obvious.

Action first.

Certainty later.

Claire held his gaze until something in his expression shifted.

He stepped back.

Ruiz exhaled.

"Thank you."

Dante looked at Adrian.

"You are done."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"I understand."

"Your access is revoked now."

"Understood."

"And if I find out you gave her current information—"

"Dante," Claire said.

His jaw tightened.

He stopped.

Ruiz collected the drive and ledger as evidence.

She agreed to make forensic copies before anything was reviewed in detail.

Dante hated that too.

Claire could tell by the way he looked at the evidence bag as if it had personally offended him.

Outside the warehouse, Adrian stood alone near the curb.

No Moretti vehicle waited for him.

Claire slowed.

Dante kept walking.

"He has nowhere to go," she said.

"He has a house."

"You know what I mean."

Dante stopped.

"He lied to me for three years."

"Yes."

"He compromised my security."

"Maybe."

"You just told me you hated that word."

"I'm growing."

He looked at her.

Claire lowered her voice.

"You can be angry and still not abandon someone on the worst day of his life."

"You are defending a man who may have helped put you in danger."

"I defended Matteo before I knew his last name."

The answer silenced him.

Dante looked toward Adrian.

"One car," he said to a guard.

"Take him home."

Adrian's face showed brief surprise.

Claire walked toward the sedan.

Dante caught up beside her.

"You are dangerous."

"I've been told."

"You make people reconsider decisions they already made."

"Maybe they should make better first decisions."

That almost earned a smile.

Back at the safe house, Ruiz called with the first results from the drive.

The files were encrypted but not inaccessible.

One directory contained financial records tied to shell companies associated with Cross.

Another contained photographs of meetings.

A third was labeled MORETTI.

Dante put the call on speaker.

"Open it," he said.

"We're working on it," Ruiz replied.

"How long?"

"Long enough for you to practice patience."

"I don't practice things I don't intend to use."

Ruiz hung up on him.

Claire stared.

"I like her."

"I noticed."

Matteo came into the kitchen with homework.

Claire sat with him while Dante took calls in the study.

For an hour, the house almost felt normal.

Matteo worked through fractions.

Claire pretended not to hate fractions.

Rosa made soup.

Rain tapped against the windows.

Then Matteo looked up from his worksheet.

"Is Adrian in trouble?"

Claire paused.

"Why do you ask?"

"Papa's angry voice is quieter than his normal voice."

That was remarkably accurate.

"Adults are figuring something out."

Matteo nodded.

"Adrian takes me to soccer."

"I know."

"He wouldn't hurt me."

Claire looked toward the study door.

"Sometimes people make bad choices because they're scared."

"Like lying?"

"Yes."

"Papa hates lying."

"Most people do."

Matteo looked down.

"Papa lies too."

Claire's attention sharpened.

"About what?"

"My mom."

She stayed quiet.

Matteo traced his pencil along the edge of the paper.

"He says she died because she was sick."

"Wasn't she?"

"I heard Uncle Carlo say it wasn't the whole story."

Claire knew Carlo was Dante's older cousin and business partner.

She had met him once that morning.

Silver hair.

Expensive coat.

A smile that never reached his eyes.

"What did Carlo say?"

Matteo lowered his voice.

"He said Papa still blames Evelyn."

Claire went still.

"Evelyn Cross?"

Matteo nodded.

The study door opened behind them.

Dante stood there.

His face told Claire he had heard everything.

"Matteo," he said.

The boy looked guilty.

"Go help Rosa."

"But my homework—"

"Five minutes."

Matteo left.

Claire closed the workbook.

"You knew Evelyn before her husband died."

Dante said nothing.

"You told me you knew her husband."

"I did."

"You left out the part where she was connected to your wife's death."

His face hardened.

"It's complicated."

Claire stood.

"That's what Michael said."

The comparison landed.

"Don't do that."

"Then don't sound like him."

Dante looked away.

For the first time since Claire met him, he seemed tired.

"My wife, Lucia, was investigating money disappearing from a charitable foundation our families supported."

Claire waited.

"She found Victor and Evelyn Cross moving funds through shell companies."

"Lakeshore?"

"An earlier version."

"What happened?"

Dante's eyes went distant.

"Lucia was driving to meet an attorney when her car crossed the center line."

Claire's chest tightened.

"An accident?"

"That's what the report said."

"And you don't believe it."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because two days later, the files she had collected disappeared from our house."

Claire thought of her own apartment.

Drawers dumped.

Cushions torn.

A carefully placed message on the table.

"You think Evelyn took them."

"I could never prove it."

"And now Marcus's drive may contain proof."

Dante nodded.

Claire felt anger rise.

"You should have told me."

"Why?"

"Because she is targeting me."

"I was trying not to drag you deeper."

"You don't get to protect me with missing information."

Dante's expression tightened.

"I know that now."

Claire stared at him.

"Do you?"

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

Detective Ruiz.

Dante put it on speaker.

"We opened the MORETTI folder," Ruiz said.

"What's inside?"

There was a pause.

"Photos."

"Of what?"

"Your house."

Dante went still.

"Which house?"

"The one you're in now."

Claire's skin went cold.

Ruiz continued.

"Interior photos."

Dante's eyes moved slowly around the kitchen.

"How recent?"

"One was taken yesterday."

Claire looked toward the ceiling cameras.

Someone had not merely accessed the safe house system.

Dante looked at the photograph again.

The image had been taken from shoulder height, not from a fixed security camera.

That meant a person had stood in the kitchen and aimed a phone toward the table.

Claire imagined someone moving through the room while Rosa cooked, Matteo ate, and guards stood at doors believing the house was secure.

"Could it be staff?" she asked.

Dante's expression tightened.

"Everyone assigned to the house has been with us for years."

"That didn't protect you from Carlo."

He looked at her.

The sentence hurt.

Claire regretted the sharpness but not the point.

"Trust isn't evidence," she said more softly.

Adrian, still standing apart from them, nodded.

"She's right."

Dante turned toward him.

For one tense second, Claire thought the old anger would return.

Instead Dante said, "Give Ruiz the full staff list."

Adrian blinked.

"Even after—"

"Especially after."

Adrian nodded.

Claire saw something complicated pass between them.

Betrayal had not erased years of loyalty.

Loyalty had not erased betrayal.

Both things could exist at once.

That was messier than choosing heroes and villains.

May you like

It was also more true.

Someone had been inside.
