Chapter 6 - The Camera That Lied.

Claire crossed the library before anyone could stop her.
She reached the front window and looked through the narrow gap between the curtains.
Nothing moved on the sidewalk.
A delivery truck passed at the end of the block.
A woman pushed a stroller beneath bare trees.
There was no cream coat.
No white gloves.
"I saw her," Claire said.
Adrian joined her at the window.
"Where?"
"Across the street."
"Evelyn Cross is at O'Hare."
Claire pointed toward Dante's phone.
"According to a photograph."
The room went still.
Dante looked at the image again.
Claire saw the realization move through his face.
"Timestamp," he said.
Adrian checked the metadata.
"Embedded at capture."
"Can it be spoofed?"
"Yes."
Claire looked from one man to the other.
"So the picture could be fake."
"Or old," Adrian said.
Dante called the airport team.
Thirty seconds later, the answer came back.
Marcus was not at Gate C17.
Neither was Evelyn Cross.
The seats shown in the photograph were occupied by a family from Milwaukee.
Claire folded her arms.
"Someone wanted you looking at the airport."
Dante's gaze moved toward the street.
"While they looked at the house."
Adrian was already issuing orders.
Exterior teams shifted positions.
Camera feeds appeared across the library monitor.
Every sidewalk angle was covered.
Nothing suspicious appeared.
Claire pointed to the camera facing the front gate.
"Rewind five minutes."
Adrian did.
The screen showed the same stroller.
The same delivery truck.
No cream-coated woman.
"That's impossible," Claire said.
"Are you sure what you saw?"
Dante's question was careful.
That irritated her more than disbelief would have.
"Yes."
Adrian replayed it again.
Claire watched the shadows.
Something bothered her.
The stroller woman passed the gate.
Three seconds later, the truck crossed the far end of the frame.
Then the woman passed the gate again.
Claire leaned closer.
"Stop."
Adrian froze the image.
"Go back twelve seconds."
He did.
The stroller woman appeared.
"Forward."
She appeared again in exactly the same posture.
Same foot lifted.
Same fold in the child's blanket.
Claire pointed.
"It's looping."
Adrian went silent.
Dante's voice dropped.
"How long?"
Adrian checked the system.
"Front gate feed has been repeating a twenty-two-second segment for nine minutes."
"Inside breach?"
"Has to be."
Claire's skin went cold.
The safe house had not been watched from outside.
Someone had reached its cameras.
"Who has access?" Dante asked.
"Myself."
Adrian hesitated.
"You."
"Who else?"
"Primary tech admin."
"Name."
"Leo Vargas."
Dante turned toward one of the guards.
"Bring him here."
The guard did not move.
"He's off-site today," Adrian said.
"Why?"
"His daughter is sick."
Claire watched Adrian closely.
He looked angry.
Not defensive.
"Call him," she said.
Adrian glanced at Dante.
Dante nodded.
The call went directly to voicemail.
Adrian tried again.
Nothing.
"Find his phone," Dante said.
Another security officer began working at a laptop.
A location appeared.
The phone was moving west on the Eisenhower Expressway.
"Vehicle?" Dante asked.
"Registered SUV."
"Who's driving?"
No one knew.
Claire looked at the repeating camera feed.
"Maybe Leo isn't the traitor."
Dante glanced at her.
"Why?"
"Because whoever did this wants us to think he is."
"That doesn't mean he isn't."
"No."
Claire looked at the fake airport photograph.
"But it's the same trick."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Create a direction, then move somewhere else."
"Exactly."
Adrian folded his arms.
"So where are they moving?"
Claire's phone rang.
The sound made everyone look at her.
Blocked number.
She knew before answering.
Michael.
Dante stepped closer.
Claire held up one finger.
"I'm answering."
"Speaker."
"No."
"Claire."
"If he hears a room full of men breathing, he'll hang up."
Dante's jaw tightened.
He nodded.
Claire answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then Michael's voice.
"You shouldn't be there."
Claire's eyes moved to Dante.
"Where should I be?"
"Anywhere Moretti isn't."
"You were at Aurelio's."
Michael breathed out.
"I know what it looks like."
"It looks like you forged my name on a quarter-million-dollar loan and showed up at my job before a glass wall fell on a child."
The room went completely still.
Michael's voice dropped.
"You found the papers."
Claire's anger sharpened.
"You hid them in my apartment."
"I was trying to leave you proof."
"Proof of what?"
"That Evelyn owns me."
Claire gripped the phone harder.
"People are not owned."
"You haven't met her."
"Apparently I almost did this morning."
Silence.
"What do you mean?"
"Where is Evelyn right now?"
"I don't know."
"Michael."
"I swear."
His voice cracked.
"Claire, listen to me."
She heard traffic behind him.
"Evelyn wanted access to Moretti's table."
Dante's eyes went cold.
Claire forced her voice steady.
"Why?"
"Not to hurt the kid."
"Then why did the glass fall on him?"
"It wasn't supposed to."
Dante took one step closer.
Claire turned away from him.
"What was supposed to happen?"
Michael spoke quickly now.
"The panel was supposed to fail after the Morettis left."
"That makes no sense."
"There was something hidden inside the frame."
Claire stopped breathing.
"What?"
"A drive."
Dante's expression changed.
Michael continued.
"Marcus was supposed to remove it during cleanup."
"A drive with what on it?"
"I don't know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I was the courier."
"You sabotaged the bolts."
"No."
"You were in the hallway."
"I delivered tools and the envelope."
Claire closed her eyes.
"So you helped."
"I didn't know Matteo would still be sitting there."
"You knew people would be in the room."
"Claire."
"You helped create the risk."
Michael's voice fell apart.
"I know."
For a second, she hated him with a clarity that surprised her.
Not because he had abandoned her.
Not because he had stolen her savings.
Because he had taken the same selfish weakness that ruined her life and carried it into a room with a child.
"What is on the drive?" she asked.
"Something Evelyn believes can destroy Moretti."
Claire looked at Dante.
"Where is it?"
"I don't know."
"Michael."
"Marcus took it."
"Where is Marcus?"
"That's why I'm calling."
A horn sounded behind him.
"He's dead."
Claire's breath stopped.
Dante's eyes sharpened.
"What?"
"They found him this morning in a motel near Midway."
"Who found him?"
"Evelyn's people."
Claire swallowed.
"And the drive?"
"Missing."
Michael lowered his voice.
"Evelyn thinks you have it."
"Why would I?"
"Because Marcus hid it before the panel came down."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Stop saying that."
"Claire, he spoke to you that night."
The room seemed to narrow around her.
Marcus telling her table seven needed water.
Marcus brushing past her.
His hand briefly touching the pitcher tray.
Claire remembered something else.
A small folded napkin he had pushed into her apron pocket.
She had assumed it was a table note.
She had never checked.
Her ruined uniform was still sealed in evidence at the hospital.
Claire looked at Dante.
He understood from her face.
"What?"
She spoke into the phone.
"Michael, I have to go."
"Claire, don't trust—"
She ended the call.
"My apron," she said.
Dante moved instantly.
"What about it?"
"Marcus put something in my pocket before the glass fell."
"What?"
"I don't know."
Dante was already calling the hospital.
Claire stared at the looping camera feed.
Someone had invaded the safe house system.
Someone had staged a false airport sighting.
Someone wanted a missing drive badly enough to search her apartment.
And the one object nobody had examined was sitting in an evidence bag across the city.
Dante ended the call.
"The bag was signed out twenty minutes ago."
Claire's stomach dropped.
"By who?"
Dante looked at Adrian.
"Claire stared at the words as a strange numbness spread through her.
"She didn't just steal my clothes."
Dante looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"She walked into a hospital and used my face, my name, my paperwork."
Claire's voice tightened.
"Michael already did that with the loan."
Dante understood.
This was not only about evidence.
It was about somebody treating Claire's identity as another unlocked door.
"We'll fix it," he said.
She looked at him.
"You can't fix a name."
"No."
He corrected himself immediately.
"But we can stop them from using it."
Claire appreciated the correction more than the promise.
Adrian began calling hospital security while Dante ordered credit locks and identity alerts through a lawyer.
Claire interrupted.
"Ask before you file anything in my name."
Dante paused with the phone in his hand.
Then he nodded.
"Tell me what you want done."
It was a tiny change.
But after days of people moving her life around like furniture, it mattered.
Claire took the phone.
"First, we get my property back."
She looked toward the door.
"Then we find out why someone wanted my apron badly enough to become me."
Dante's expression turned cold.
"Agreed."
The hospital called back before they could leave.
There was one more detail.
The woman had not simply asked for Claire's evidence bag.
She had known the exact inventory number.
That information had never been public.
Someone had given it to her from inside the chain of custody.
Dante ended the call and looked at Adrian.
"This isn't one leak."
Adrian's face hardened.
"No."
Claire felt the walls of the safe house grow smaller.
"It's a network."
May you like
Nobody disagreed.
A woman claiming to be Claire Bennett."
