Chapter 14 - The Choice He Was Not Allowed To Make.

Claire thought she had misunderstood.
"You offered yourself?"
Dante looked at Ruiz leading Carlo down the hallway.
"Not literally."
"That clarification is not helping."
He faced her.
"Evelyn wanted access to my businesses and protection from prosecution."
"And you offered it?"
"I told her I would transfer control of three companies and give her a route out of the country if she left you and Matteo alone."
Claire stared at him.
"You negotiated with her behind everyone's back."
"Yes."
"After I specifically told you not to protect me with missing information."
"Yes."
"You really absorb lessons selectively."
His expression tightened.
"I was buying time."
"With criminal assets?"
"With mine."
"That's not the point."
"It is to me."
Claire stepped closer.
"You don't get to decide your life is expendable because you're frightened."
Dante's jaw flexed.
"I wasn't frightened for myself."
"I know."
That was the problem.
He would accept almost any cost if he could frame it as protection.
Claire had spent years with Michael, a man who made other people pay for his fear.
Dante was the opposite in the most dangerous way.
He tried to pay every cost himself.
Neither pattern was healthy.
"What did Evelyn say?"
"She said she would consider it."
"Which means she never planned to honor it."
"Probably."
Claire pointed toward him.
"There is that word again."
Dante almost smiled.
She did not.
"Call her."
His expression changed.
"No."
"Call her."
"Why?"
"Because she thinks you are desperate enough to make a deal."
"I was."
Claire held his eyes.
"Good. Let her keep thinking that."
Ruiz returned.
"I heard that."
Claire turned.
"Can we use it?"
Ruiz considered.
"If Cross believes Dante is ready to transfer assets, she may agree to a controlled meeting."
Dante looked between them.
"I dislike how quickly you two form alliances."
"It's one of my favorite things about this week," Claire said.
"That says disturbing things about your week."
Ruiz raised a hand.
"Before the married-couple routine becomes unbearable—"
"We're not married," Claire and Dante said together.
Ruiz stared at them.
"That made it worse."
Claire looked away.
Dante suddenly found the broken partition fascinating.
The plan developed before dawn.
Carlo agreed to cooperate through his attorney.
Not out of loyalty.
Out of guilt.
He gave Ruiz the private number Evelyn used for high-risk negotiations.
He also provided access codes to one shell company still moving money through a Moretti-controlled real-estate firm.
Ruiz obtained emergency warrants.
Federal financial investigators joined the case by sunrise.
Dante disliked them too.
Claire was beginning to suspect Dante disliked institutions as a hobby.
At 8:10 a.m., he called Evelyn.
Claire sat across from him in Aurelio's empty private dining room.
Ruiz listened from the kitchen.
"You wanted an answer," Dante said.
Evelyn's voice came through the speaker.
"I did."
"You get the companies."
Claire watched Dante's face.
He sounded completely sincere.
That was unsettling.
"And the drive?" Evelyn asked.
"Destroyed."
Silence.
"I don't believe you."
"Then leave Chicago and spend the rest of your life wondering."
Evelyn laughed softly.
"Lucia would hate what you've become."
Dante's hand tightened around the phone.
Claire reached across the table and touched one finger to his wrist.
His eyes met hers.
He breathed once.
"Lucia hated cowards," he said.
Evelyn went quiet.
"Where?" she asked.
"The old Lakeshore office in Cicero."
"Tonight."
"No."
"Dante."
"Noon."
"You are impatient."
"You knew that already."
She agreed.
The call ended.
Ruiz entered.
"Good."
Dante looked at Claire.
"Everybody says that now."
"Personal growth."
At eleven thirty, Claire learned the final piece from Michael.
He called from a protected interview room with his attorney present.
Ruiz put him on speaker.
"There is something you need to know about Evelyn," Michael said.
Claire sat forward.
"What?"
"She never goes to meetings without an exit plan."
"Obviously."
"No."
Michael sounded urgent.
"I mean a financial exit."
Dante frowned.
"Explain."
"If she thinks she's about to lose control, she triggers transfers."
"To where?"
"Offshore accounts."
Ruiz made a note.
"Can you identify them?"
"Not all."
"Any?"
"One."
Michael gave them a routing sequence.
Federal investigators traced it to a Caribbean trust account.
A standing instruction was attached.
If Evelyn failed to enter a daily authorization code by 1:00 p.m., forty-two million dollars would scatter through six jurisdictions.
Ruiz stared at the screen.
"Dead-man transfer."
Claire looked at the clock.
11:47.
"If we arrest her at noon, the money moves at one."
"Unless we get the authorization device," Ruiz said.
Dante's expression hardened.
"She'll carry it."
Michael spoke through the phone.
"No."
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
"She keeps it with someone she trusts."
"Who?" Claire asked.
Michael hesitated.
"Her daughter."
Claire blinked.
"Evelyn has a daughter?"
"Nora Cross. Twenty-four."
Ruiz typed quickly.
"No criminal record. Graduate student at Northwestern."
Dante looked at Claire.
"Evelyn uses her own daughter as a fail-safe."
Michael's voice turned bitter.
"Evelyn uses everyone."
Claire thought of a woman who built power by identifying desperation, debt, shame, grief, and family bonds, then converting them into control.
For the first time, Evelyn did not seem powerful.
She seemed trapped inside the same system she created.
"Does Nora know?" Claire asked.
"I don't think so," Michael said.
Ruiz stood.
"We need to find her before the meeting."
Dante looked at the clock.
"Thirteen minutes."
"We have officers near campus."
Ruiz started making calls.
At 11:58, Dante and Claire sat in separate cars outside the abandoned Lakeshore office.
Claire was not supposed to be there.
That argument had lasted seven minutes.
She won by pointing out Evelyn might refuse to approach if Claire was absent from Dante's vehicle.
Dante called that manipulation.
Claire called it strategy.
At exactly noon, a cream-colored sedan entered the lot.
Evelyn stepped out wearing white gloves.
Alone.
She walked toward Dante's car.
Ruiz's voice sounded in Claire's earpiece.
"Hold."
Evelyn stopped six feet away.
"Where are the transfer documents?"
Dante opened his door.
"Inside."
Evelyn looked through the windshield and saw Claire.
Her expression changed.
"Of course."
Claire got out.
"Nice gloves."
"You are difficult to frighten."
"I'm frightened all the time."
Claire shrugged carefully.
"I just don't find it useful as a personality."
Evelyn almost smiled.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Her face drained of color.
Nora was calling.
Evelyn answered.
"Where are you?"
Claire could hear a young woman's confused voice.
"Mom, police are here."
Evelyn looked up.
Everything changed in her face at once.
Not anger.
Fear.
The same fear she had monetized in everyone else.
Ruiz stepped from behind the building with officers.
"Evelyn Cross."
Evelyn backed toward her car.
Dante did not move.
Claire watched him.
This was the moment Lucia's letter had predicted years earlier.
The person connected to her death stood within reach.
Dante could act.
Instead, he stepped back.
Ruiz arrested Evelyn without resistance.
As the cuffs closed, Evelyn looked at Claire.
"You think this ends because you found a ledger?"
Claire met her eyes.
"No."
"Then what do you think?"
Claire looked at Dante.
Then at the officers.
Then at the woman who had spent years making people believe they had no choices.
"I think this ends because people finally stopped being afraid alone."
Evelyn's face hardened.
She was taken away.
Dante stood beside Claire in the empty lot.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Ruiz walked toward them carrying her phone.
Her expression was not relieved.
"We have a problem."
Dante looked at her.
"What now?"
Ruiz turned the screen around.
Nora Cross had handed police the authorization device.
But one transfer had already been triggered.
Claire stared at the line until the letters blurred.
Dante took the phone from Ruiz without asking, then immediately handed it back as if remembering the new rules a second too late.
"Sorry."
Ruiz blinked.
Claire almost laughed despite the situation.
"Growth," she said.
"Do not start."
Ruiz zoomed into the transfer data.
"The amount is hidden on this screen."
"How much?" Dante asked.
"We need the banking team to verify."
Dante looked toward Evelyn being placed into a police vehicle.
"Could it be enough to implicate Matteo?"
"Any transfer can create a paper trail."
Claire understood immediately.
Evelyn's last move was not necessarily to steal money.
It was to contaminate the Moretti family with her own records.
If she could not control Dante, she could make investigators question him.
"She planned for losing," Claire said.
Ruiz nodded.
"People like Cross often do."
Dante's eyes stayed on the police car.
"Then we planned better."
Claire looked at him.
It was the first time he had said we without meaning his own organization.
He meant Claire.
Ruiz.
Carlo's cooperation.
Michael's statement.
People who had stopped acting alone.
The realization settled quietly between them.
Then Ruiz's banking analyst called.
She answered on speaker.
"We have the amount."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Tell me."
