Chapter 5: The Midnight Raid

The rain began to fall in heavy, slanting sheets just past midnight, drumming a frantic rhythm against the roof of the state police safehouse.

Inside the small kitchen, the fluorescent lights hummed a low, irritating tune. Inspector Reed stood over a folding table covered in printed legal documents, aerial estate photographs, and handwritten notes.

"Judge Henderson is an old-school jurist," Reed explained, tapping his pen against a document. "He doesn't care about corporate politics or billionaire bribes. If we walk into his private chambers before court opens at nine tomorrow and present Daniel’s original signed will—along with the smart-home fire logs showing the manual override from the basement terminal—he will slap an emergency injunction on Victoria’s assets so fast it’ll make her head spin."

Evelyn crossed her arms, leaning against the Formica counter. "There’s just one problem. Where is the original signed physical copy of the will?"

Reed paused, lowering his pen. "You said you found the safe open in Noah’s room?"

"Yes. But I only grabbed the blueprint and a few preliminary draft pages because the heat was too intense," Evelyn replied, shaking her head. "The final signed document with the red corporate ribbon... it was still inside the wall safe when the smoke forced me out."

Noah, who had wheeled himself into the kitchen doorway using a spare manual chair provided by the officers, spoke up quietly.

"It’s not in the wall safe," Noah said.

Reed and Evelyn both turned to look at him.

"What do you mean, Noah?" Evelyn asked.

"My dad knew Victoria was looking through his papers," Noah said, his voice steady despite his young age. "The night before he died... he came into my room while I was sleeping. He woke me up, and he made me help him hide something heavy behind the old library wainscoting downstairs."

Inspector Reed’s eyes narrowed. "The library? But the east wing caught fire first. The library is right beneath the origin point."

"No," Noah corrected, shaking his head. "Not the main library. The private archive room behind the floor-to-ceiling map case. Nobody goes in there except the estate archivist—and he retired three months ago, and Victoria never replaced him."

Evelyn’s eyes widened as the memory clicked into place. "The underground vault tunnel! There’s a sub-basement archive level beneath the east wing that wasn't touched by the main structural collapse because it’s encased in reinforced concrete fallout shelter walls from the Cold War!"

Inspector Reed looked at his watch. It was 1:15 AM.

"If that sub-basement survived the fire," Reed said grimly, "then the physical signed copy of Daniel’s will is sitting down there right now, waiting to be recovered. And Victoria’s private security detail knows it."

"They’ll be searching the ruins by dawn to destroy whatever didn't burn," Evelyn said urgently. "We have to go back."

Reed didn't hesitate. He pulled his service Glock from its holster, checked the magazine with a sharp click, and slid it back into place.

"Grab your coats," Reed ordered. "We’re going back to Whitmore House."

(The story continues in Chapter 6 as Evelyn, Noah, and Inspector Reed infiltrate the smoking ruins of Whitmore House under cover of darkness, racing against Victoria’s corrupt security team to unearth the final piece of evidence that will bring down an empire.)
