Chapter 19: Springtime at Whitmore House

May arrived in Greenwich with an explosion of vibrant color. The restored east wing of Whitmore House gleamed in the spring sunlight, its new limestone facade blending seamlessly with the historic architecture of the original estate.

Inside the grand foyer, fresh white lilies filled crystal vases—a detail Evelyn personally oversaw every single morning.

On the lawn, the reconstruction of the central fountain was finally complete. Water arced gracefully into the stone basin, sparkling under a brilliant blue sky.

Noah sat near the edge of the terrace, but today, he wasn't in his wheelchair.

With the help of his physical therapist and a pair of specialized forearm-support parallel bars set up on the patio, Noah was standing on his own two feet. His face was flushed with exertion, his brow beaded with sweat, but a massive, triumphant grin stretched across his face.

"Keep your core engaged, Noah! Look straight ahead, not down at your shoes!" Evelyn called out encouragingly from the porch steps, holding a cold glass of lemonade.

"I'm doing it, Evelyn! Look!" Noah laughed, taking one careful, deliberate step forward, then a second.

Inspector Reed, who had stopped by to drop off final copies of the corporate asset transfer documents, leaned against the porch railing and smiled broadly.

"Kid’s got more grit in his little finger than half the corporate boardrooms in Manhattan," Reed remarked, taking a sip of coffee. "The independent audit committee officially signed off on the restructuring this morning. Whitmore Industrial is officially stable, and the charitable foundation in Daniel’s name is fully funded."

Evelyn watched Noah successfully complete four steps before resting against the support bars, breathing heavily with a proud, radiant smile.

"He earned every single step of it, Thomas," Evelyn said softly, her heart swelling with an emotion words could scarcely capture.
