Chapter 14: A New Visitor

"Afternoon, boss. Afternoon, kid," Inspector Reed greeted them with a tired but satisfied grin as he pulled off his leather gloves.

"Inspector! To what do we owe the pleasure?" Evelyn asked, walking over to greet him. "Is there an update on the trial prep?"

Reed dropped the manila envelope onto the foyer table. "The trial prep is moving along just fine. Victoria’s defense team tried to file a motion for a psychiatric evaluation last week, claiming she suffered from 'prolonged billionaire stress syndrome.' The judge threw it out within five minutes."

Noah wheeled himself closer, his eyes bright with curiosity. "So she’s actually going to trial?"

"Without a parachute," Reed confirmed, pulling a folded legal notice from his coat pocket. "Which brings me to why I’m here today. With Victoria’s assets completely frozen and the corporate board reorganized under the independent audit committee, the estate’s legal team had to settle some lingering housekeeping matters regarding legacy staff compensation."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Housekeeping matters?"

Reed slid a single sheet of heavy parchment across the table toward her.

Evelyn looked down at it. Her eyes widened as she read the bold header: WHITMORE INDUSTRIAL FOUNDATION - PERPETUAL DEED OF TRUST AND ESTATE MANAGERIAL ASSIGNMENT.

"What is this, Thomas?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping to a stunned whisper.

"It’s a permanent endowment," Reed explained, crossing his arms. "Daniel Whitmore’s original charter included a clause for loyal service retainers. But the court-appointed trustees added a special rider approved by the probate judge this morning. Whitmore House is no longer just a private estate; it’s legally designated as a trust-protected sanctuary. And you aren't just the estate director anymore, Evelyn."

He pointed a finger at the signature line at the bottom of the page, where a bold, embossed stamp bore the seal of the primary board.

"You’re named as the primary managing trustee and legal guardian of Noah until he reaches majority. Complete operational authority. Complete financial signature rights."

Evelyn stared at the paper, her breath catching in her throat. Eleven years of scrubbing floors, hiding crackers in desk drawers, turning a blind eye to corporate cruelty, and finally risking her life in a blazing inferno had all led to this single moment.

She wasn't just a servant anymore. She was family, in every way that truly mattered.

Noah looked up at her, his eyes shining with unshed tears of absolute joy. "You're not leaving, right?"

May you like

Evelyn knelt down beside his wheelchair, wrapping her arms tightly around him, burying her face in his shoulder as a tear finally slipped down her cheek.

"Not on your life, kiddo," she whispered fiercely. "Not on your life."
