Chapter 17: The Testimony That Shook Wall Street

Evelyn’s voice resonated clearly through the courtroom microphone, cutting through the dense, tense atmosphere like a razor.
"I worked at Whitmore House for eleven years," Evelyn testified under direct examination by Attorney General Miller. "During that time, I witnessed a systematic effort by Mrs. Whitmore to isolate young Noah from his family legacy, restrict his medical access, and ultimately, eliminate any legal obstacles to her control over the corporate trust."
Victoria’s lead defense counsel sprang to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! Speculation and character assassination without physical proof of malicious intent!"
"The proof is in the smart-home telemetry logs and the physical state of the east wing safe, Counsel," Judge Thorne shot back, overruling the objection instantly. "Continue, Mrs. Brooks."
Evelyn detailed the night of the fire with chilling precision. She described the locked exterior deadbolt on Noah’s room, Victoria’s calculated command not to return for the boy, and the terrifying discovery of the empty wall safe.
When it was the defense's turn to cross-examine, Victoria’s lawyer tried a desperate angle.
"Mrs. Brooks," the lawyer sneer-smiled, pacing toward the witness box. "As the estate’s new managing trustee, your salary and operational budget have increased exponentially since the fire, correct? Isn't it true that your sudden loyalty to the young heir is entirely motivated by financial self-preservation?"
Evelyn didn't blink. She looked the high-priced attorney dead in the eye.
"For eleven years, I watched a little boy eat dinner alone at the end of a twenty-four-seat table while his stepmother planned his financial execution," Evelyn replied, her voice ringing with quiet, absolute power. "I didn't risk my life in a burning building for a salary. I did it because someone had to care."
A murmur rippled through the gallery. Even the judge looked down at the defense counsel with a disapproving glare.
"No further questions," the lawyer muttered, retreating to his seat in absolute defeat.

When Noah took the stand next via video link from a private chambers room to protect his health, his testimony was even more devastating. He recounted the night his father died, the arguments over the offshore accounts, and the chilling sound of the deadbolt sliding home as the flames licked the hallway walls.
By the time the afternoon session adjourned, Victoria Whitmore’s legal wall had completely crumbled.
