Chapter 13: The Reconstruction

Three months passed.
The skeletal remains of Whitmore House’s east wing had been completely cleared away by heavy machinery, replaced by the humming yellow cranes and scaffolding of a massive architectural restoration project. But this time, things were different.
With Victoria awaiting trial in a high-security detention facility in Hartford—and Marcus Vance facing federal wire-fraud and obstruction charges—the administration of the estate had fundamentally changed.
The revolving door of cold, distant tutors and neglectful nurses was gone. In their place, a professional pediatric care team was hired, vetted personally by Inspector Reed and Evelyn, who had been officially promoted to Estate Director and Guardian Advocate.
On a crisp December afternoon, Evelyn walked through the newly rebuilt north gallery, holding a clipboard of design swatches for the library reconstruction.
The double doors leading out to the back lawn were propped open, letting in the sharp scent of pine and crisp winter air. Sitting near the window in his updated, state-of-the-art motorized wheelchair was Noah. The digital control panel hummed smoothly, responding effortlessly to his touch. He was looking out over the gardens, watching a pair of golden retrievers race across the fresh grass.
"Your physical therapist called," Evelyn said, walking over and handing him a glass of fresh apple juice. "She said your core strength has improved by forty percent over the last month. She thinks you might be ready for the parallel bars by next spring."
Noah took the glass, smiling up at her. "Dr. Vance—wait, no, we don't use that name anymore—Dr. Evans said the same thing." He chuckled, a light, carefree sound that used to be so rare in this echoing mausoleum of a house. "She thinks I might actually be able to walk down the aisle at my own high school graduation."
"I have no doubt about that," Evelyn said warmly, resting a hand on his shoulder. "By the time you're eighteen, you'll be running half of Greenwich off the soccer field."
"What about the other half?" Noah teased playfully.
"The other half you'll be managing from your desk in the corporate tower," Evelyn laughed.

Suddenly, the heavy front doors of the foyer swung open, and heavy footsteps echoed across the marble.
Inspector Reed walked in, wearing his signature dark trench coat, carrying a thick manila envelope under his arm.
