Chapter 9 – The Secret Aaron Died Protecting

The room fell into stunned silence.
Hannah instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.
“What do you mean?” she whispered. “Why would anyone say that about my baby?”
Victor handed his phone to Daniel.
The message contained only one sentence:
The child was never supposed to be born. Finish what was started.
No signature.
No number.
Just a secure encrypted account that disappeared seconds after the message was delivered.
Daniel's expression turned to stone.
“Lock down the estate,” he ordered.
“No one enters. No one leaves without my permission.”
Victor nodded immediately.
“Yes, sir.”
Hannah sat down slowly, struggling to process the words.
“My baby... has nothing to do with any of this.”
Daniel knelt in front of her.
“I don't think they're after the baby.”
She looked at him, confused.
“I think they're after what Aaron discovered.”
Martin frowned.
“But why threaten the child?”
Daniel picked up the folder containing Aaron's documents.
“Because they believe Hannah knows where Aaron hid the evidence.”
Hannah shook her head.
“I don't.”
Then she stopped.
A forgotten memory surfaced.
Three nights before Aaron died...
He had come home unusually quiet.
Instead of eating dinner, he walked straight into the nursery.
She remembered finding him standing beneath the yellow walls he had painted.
“If anything ever happens to me,” he had said softly, “promise me you won't throw away the rocking horse.”
At the time, she had laughed.
“You're talking like an old man.”
He smiled, but there had been sadness in his eyes.
“Just promise me.”
“I promise.”
Hannah's eyes suddenly widened.
“The rocking horse.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“What about it?”
“Aaron never asked me to keep anything.”
“He specifically mentioned the rocking horse.”
Martin's face lit up.
“He hid something inside it.”
Daniel stood at once.
“Victor.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Send two trusted men to Hannah's apartment.”
“They're to bring back one yellow wooden rocking horse.”
Victor smiled for the first time all day.
“I'll leave immediately.”
Three hours later...
The rocking horse sat on Daniel's desk.
Dust covered its wooden frame.
Hannah gently ran her fingers across the faded yellow paint.
“Aaron built this himself.”
Daniel turned it over carefully.
“There.”
A tiny brass screw beneath one of the runners looked newer than the others.
Victor removed it with a small screwdriver.
A hidden compartment slid open.
Inside was a waterproof flash drive.
No one spoke.
Daniel plugged it into his laptop.
Dozens of encrypted files appeared.
Shipping records.
Bank transfers.
Offshore accounts.
Photographs.
Then one video file caught Hannah's attention.
It was labeled:
If You're Watching This, I'm Already Dead.
With trembling hands, she clicked Play.
Aaron appeared on the screen wearing his work clothes.
His face looked exhausted.
“Hannah,” he began, forcing a smile.
“If you're seeing this, I couldn't make it home.”
Tears immediately filled Hannah's eyes.
Aaron continued.
“I found proof that someone has been stealing millions through fake shipping companies.”
“I trusted the wrong people.”
“If they discover what I know, they'll kill me.”
He paused and looked directly into the camera.
“But there's something even more important.”
He reached into his pocket and held up a folded document.
“I've completed a DNA test.”
Hannah frowned.
“A DNA test?”
Aaron nodded on the recording.
“Our baby is mine.”
“I wanted to leave proof because I knew they'd try to use lies to destroy you after I'm gone.”
Hannah covered her mouth, sobbing.
Daniel quietly looked away, giving her a moment.
Aaron smiled sadly one last time.
“Hannah... if our child is born safely, tell them every single day that their father loved them before they ever took their first breath.”
The screen went black.
No one spoke.
Finally, Martin broke the silence.
“He died protecting both of them.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Then his eyes stopped on one final folder hidden inside the flash drive.
It was titled:
BLACKWOOD – REAL IDENTITY
Daniel slowly opened it.
The first photograph appeared on the screen.
Hannah gasped.
“So... it was him.”
Martin's face drained of color.
“It can't be.”
Daniel stared at the photograph in disbelief.
