Chapter 1 – The Child's Whisper

Hannah looked down at Ben and smiled despite the ache spreading across her stomach.
“No,” she said softly. “The baby wants to keep it a surprise.”
Ben grinned and leaned closer.
“I think it's a boy.”
“And why is that?”
“Because boys kick harder.”
Hannah laughed quietly, the sound warming the little pantry for just a moment.
“You're making that up.”
“I am,” Ben admitted proudly.
Martin shook his head with a faint smile.
“You should be finishing your reading assignment.”
“I finished it yesterday.”
“You're impossible.”
Ben shrugged before lowering his voice.
“Miss Hannah... are you coming to the party tonight?”
She nodded.
“I have to serve dinner.”
“I don't like Miss Claire.”
Martin immediately glanced toward the hallway.
“Ben.”
“What? She's mean.”
“She can hear more than you think,” Martin warned.
Ben crossed his arms.
“She yelled at Maria because a spoon wasn't shiny enough. Then she threw it on the floor and made her polish every single one again.”
Hannah exchanged a worried glance with Martin.
Children noticed far more than adults realized.
A loud voice echoed from the ballroom.
“The florist is late!”
Another servant hurried past the pantry carrying silver trays.
Martin stood.
“We should get back.”
As they stepped into the hallway, Hannah suddenly froze.
A sharp pain tightened across her abdomen before disappearing almost as quickly as it came.
Martin caught her elbow.
“Sit down.”
“It passed.”
“You're seven months pregnant.”
“And if I don't work, I lose this job.”
Martin's expression darkened.
“You're more important than any dinner.”
Hannah wanted to believe him.
But the stack of unpaid bills hidden inside her dresser drawer said otherwise.
The alleged debt left by Aaron grew larger every month because of mysterious interest charges.
No matter how much she paid, the amount never seemed to shrink.
Someone wanted her trapped.
An hour later, the mansion buzzed with activity.
Luxury cars lined the circular driveway while guests in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos filled the marble entrance hall.
Hannah remained inside the kitchen, carefully arranging dessert plates.
She planned to stay invisible.
That plan lasted less than ten minutes.
Claire Whitlock swept into the kitchen wearing an elegant ivory evening gown trimmed with diamonds.
Every conversation stopped.
Her blue eyes slowly scanned the room before settling on Hannah.
“You.”
Hannah looked up.
“Yes, ma'am?”
Claire smiled—a smile that never reached her eyes.
“I've decided I want fresh champagne served personally from the ballroom balcony.”
“One of the footmen can—”
“I wasn't asking.”
The room fell silent.
Martin stepped forward.
“Miss Whitlock, Hannah has been assigned to the kitchen because—”
“Because she's a maid.”
Claire cut him off without looking at him.
“She works for this house.”
Then she looked directly at Hannah's rounded stomach.
“And unless pregnancy suddenly excuses employees from doing their jobs, she'll do exactly as I requested.”
Martin's jaw tightened.
Before he could answer, another voice came from the hallway.
“Miss Whitlock.”
One of Daniel Carver's security guards approached respectfully.
“Mr. Carver called. His meeting downtown has been delayed. He'll arrive closer to nine.”
Claire's face brightened instantly.
“Perfect. Everything must be flawless before Daniel gets here.”
She glanced back at Hannah.
“And if you embarrass me tonight…”
Her smile returned.
“…you won't have a job tomorrow.”
As Claire walked away, Hannah instinctively rested a hand over her belly.
The baby kicked.

For some reason, it felt less like movement—
and more like a warning.
