Chapter 3 – One Quiet Command

The silver scissors caught the light as Claire Whitlock raised them.

Hannah stood frozen.

Every instinct told her to pull away, but she refused to struggle. The sudden twisting could hurt her baby more than anything Claire intended to do.

“Please,” Hannah whispered. “I'm begging you... don't.”

Claire tilted her head with mock sympathy.

“Oh, relax. Hair grows back.”

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances, yet no one stepped forward.

No one wanted to become Claire's next target.

Martin Hale did.

He moved between them once again.

“Miss Whitlock,” he said firmly, “this is enough.”

Claire's smile disappeared.

“You're forgetting your place.”

“No,” Martin answered. “You're forgetting yours.”

The room went silent.

Claire's face flushed with anger.

Without warning, she shoved Martin aside. At sixty-eight, he stumbled backward, barely catching himself on a nearby table.

“Mr. Hale!” Hannah cried.

That single moment of distraction was all Claire needed.

She grabbed a fistful of Hannah's dark brown hair.

The scissors snapped shut.

A thick lock fell onto the polished marble floor.

For one long second, absolute silence filled the ballroom.

Claire held up the severed hair with a satisfied grin.

“There,” she announced proudly. “Now you finally look like a proper maid.”

A few nervous guests forced awkward laughter.

Others stared at the floor, pretending not to have seen anything.

Hannah didn't cry out.

She slowly released the serving tray, letting it rest on a nearby table before placing both hands protectively over her stomach.

A tear rolled silently down her cheek.

The baby suddenly kicked hard.

Then another sharp pain tightened across her abdomen.

She inhaled slowly, refusing to panic.

Not now.

Not here.

At that exact moment, the massive oak doors at the top of the grand staircase opened.

Every head turned.

Daniel Carver had arrived.

He stood motionless beneath the chandelier, still wearing his charcoal suit from the meeting downtown. Two members of his security team remained several steps behind him, sensing immediately that something was terribly wrong.

Daniel's eyes swept across the ballroom.

The broken expressions.

Martin's shaken posture.

The frightened servants.

Then he saw the lock of hair in Claire's hand.

Finally, his gaze settled on Hannah.

He noticed the uneven section beside her temple.

He noticed the tears she was trying so hard to hide.

Most of all, he noticed the way she cradled her stomach as though protecting her unborn child from the entire room.

Claire's smile instantly returned.

“Daniel,” she said brightly. “You're finally here.”

He didn't answer.

She laughed lightly, trying to ease the tension.

“It's nothing serious. Your maid simply needed a lesson in respect.”

Daniel slowly descended the staircase.

Each measured step echoed across the silent ballroom.

When he reached the bottom, he stopped directly in front of Claire.

“The hair,” he said quietly.

Claire blinked.

“What?”

“Put it down.”

His voice never rose.

It didn't need to.

For the first time that evening, genuine uncertainty crossed Claire's face.

She loosened her fingers.

The severed lock slipped from her hand and landed beside Hannah's shoes.

Daniel stepped past Claire as though she no longer existed.

Without saying another word, he removed his jacket and gently placed it around Hannah's trembling shoulders.

The gesture lasted only a few seconds.

But everyone in the ballroom understood exactly what it meant.

Daniel Carver had publicly chosen a pregnant maid over the woman he was supposed to marry.

And before another minute passed, the entire mansion would learn that this was only the beginning.
