Chapter 2 – A Night Meant for Humiliation

By seven-thirty that evening, the Carver mansion glowed like a palace.

Crystal chandeliers bathed the grand ballroom in warm golden light while a string quartet played near the marble fireplace. Waiters moved gracefully between nearly forty distinguished guests, offering champagne and delicate hors d'oeuvres.

Hannah kept her eyes lowered as she carried a silver tray toward the balcony.

She reminded herself of the promise she had made to Martin.

Stay quiet.

Stay invisible.

Go home when the night is over.

But some people searched for weakness the way hunters searched for prey.

Claire Whitlock was one of them.

Standing in the center of the ballroom, Claire accepted compliments on her diamond engagement ring as if she already owned the mansion.

“The Carver estate will finally have a proper lady,” one guest remarked.

Claire smiled confidently.

“It certainly will.”

Her eyes drifted across the room until they landed on Hannah.

“There she is.”

Several women turned to look.

Claire raised her champagne glass.

“You there. Come here.”

Every servant in the room stopped moving.

Hannah slowly approached.

“Yes, Miss Whitlock?”

Claire looked her up and down.

“I've been watching you all evening.”

“I've only been serving the guests.”

“Exactly. And you've been doing it very poorly.”

“I... I'm sorry if I made a mistake.”

Claire took the tray from Hannah and deliberately examined it.

“One fingerprint.”

She pointed to the polished silver edge.

“Look.”

The fingerprint was barely visible.

One of the guests leaned forward, squinting.

“I can hardly see it.”

Claire laughed softly.

“That isn't the point.”

She handed the tray back.

“A housemaid should understand perfection.”

Hannah lowered her head.

“I'll clean it immediately.”

Before she could leave, Claire blocked her path.

“No.”

The ballroom grew strangely quiet.

“I think everyone should see what happens when standards aren't respected.”

Uneasy glances spread through the crowd.

Martin, standing near the service entrance, immediately sensed trouble.

He hurried toward them.

“Miss Whitlock,” he said calmly, “I'll handle the staff.”

Claire didn't even acknowledge him.

Instead, she reached toward Hannah's neatly tied ponytail.

“What beautiful hair,” she said with false admiration.

“A shame it's wasted on someone like you.”

Hannah instinctively stepped backward.

“Please don't.”

Claire smiled wider.

“Oh, don't be dramatic.”

She snapped her fingers.

“One of you... bring me a pair of scissors.”

No one moved.

“I gave an order.”

A young servant looked at Martin, terrified.

Martin quietly shook his head.

Then Claire's voice hardened.

“Now.”

Reluctantly, the frightened servant disappeared into the kitchen.

When he returned, a pair of silver tailoring scissors rested in his trembling hand.

Martin stepped directly between Claire and Hannah.

“This has gone far enough.”

Claire folded her arms.

“Move.”

“I won't allow you to humiliate an employee.”

“You won't allow it?”

Her voice echoed through the ballroom.

“You're a steward.”

She leaned closer.

“And I'm about to become Mrs. Daniel Carver.”

Martin didn't move.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Claire smiled sweetly.

“Very well.”

She turned toward the guests.

“Apparently the servants have forgotten who gives orders in this house.”

Several guests laughed nervously, unwilling to challenge her authority.

Seeing their reaction, Claire became even bolder.

She reached around Martin, grabbed Hannah firmly by the wrist, and pulled her forward.

Hannah gasped.

“Please... you're hurting me.”

Claire ignored her.

She snatched the scissors from the servant's hand.

The ballroom fell completely silent.

Martin's heart pounded.

May you like

He knew something terrible was about to happen.

And somewhere across Providence, Daniel Carver's black sedan was speeding toward the mansion, completely unaware that within minutes, one cruel decision would change every life in the room forever.
