Chapter 8 – The Name Everyone Feared

The black SUV came to a stop beneath the front entrance of the Carver mansion.
The man in the dark suit stepped out calmly, adjusting his cuffs as though he had arrived for a business meeting instead of a murder.
From the upstairs window, Daniel watched without blinking.
“Victor,” he said.
“Yes, sir?”
“Bring him to my office.”
Victor frowned.
“Alive?”
Daniel's eyes never left the stranger.
“Especially alive.”
Within minutes, four members of Daniel's security team surrounded the man before he reached the front steps.
He didn't resist.
Instead, he smiled.
“I was expecting this.”
Victor searched him carefully, removing a loaded handgun, a folding knife, and a burner phone.
“Who sent you?” Victor asked.
The man chuckled.
“You already know.”
He was escorted to Daniel's private office, where Martin stood quietly near the fireplace.
Daniel entered a moment later.
The room fell silent.
The stranger leaned back comfortably in his chair.
“So... the famous Daniel Carver.”
Daniel sat across from him.
“Name.”
“Leon Graves.”
“Who hired you?”
“You're asking questions you already know the answers to.”
Daniel folded his hands.
“I'd rather hear you say it.”
Leon smiled.
“Claire Whitlock paid me to make Hannah Brooks disappear.”
Martin closed his eyes for a brief moment.
Even hearing the words aloud made them feel heavier.
Daniel remained calm.
“How much?”
“Fifty thousand dollars now.”
“And fifty thousand after the job was done.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“So she truly intended to have an innocent woman killed.”
Leon shrugged.
“I don't ask clients why.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“But you know something else.”
Leon studied him for several seconds before speaking.
“She wasn't the first Whitlock to hire me.”
The room became still.
“What do you mean?” Daniel asked.
Leon gave a humorless laugh.
“Eight months ago, another Whitlock executive contacted my crew.”
Hannah's name wasn't mentioned.
“A harbor mechanic was.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Aaron Brooks?”
Leon nodded once.
“He started asking questions about fake shipping accounts and missing money.”
Martin gripped the back of a chair.
“You killed him?”
Leon shook his head.
“No.”
“My crew only tracked him.”
“Then who did?”
Leon hesitated.
“You're asking about someone even I don't work against.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Leon lowered his voice.
“A man called Blackwood.”
Neither Daniel nor Martin spoke.
Leon continued.
“Real name unknown.”
“No photographs.”
“No fingerprints.”
“He cleans up problems for people with enough money.”
“And Aaron became one of those problems.”
Daniel felt anger rise beneath his calm expression.
“What about Caleb Monroe?”
For the first time, Leon looked surprised.
“You know about Caleb?”
“He's Hannah's brother.”
Leon slowly nodded.
“He found the same financial records Aaron found.”
“Is he dead?”
“I don't know.”
“But I do know this…”
Leon leaned forward.
“Blackwood never leaves loose ends.”
Upstairs, Hannah sat on the edge of the bed, unaware of the conversation downstairs.
Ben sat beside her, coloring quietly.
“Miss Hannah?”
“Yes?”
“Do you think bad people always lose?”
She smiled sadly.
“I hope so.”
Ben looked down at his drawing.
“My dad used to say that heroes don't win because they're stronger.”
“Then why?”
“Because they don't quit.”
Before Hannah could answer, Daniel entered the room.
His face was unreadable.
She immediately knew something had changed.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
“I know who targeted Aaron.”
Hope flickered across her face.
“You found the murderer?”
“Not yet.”
He paused.
“But I found the man who led them to him.”
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I made you a promise.”
“I remember.”
“I failed to protect your husband.”
She shook her head.
“You didn't even know us.”
“No.”
His voice was steady.
“But I know now.”
“And I won't fail you again.”
At that exact moment, Victor's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, then looked at Daniel.
“Sir…”
“What is it?”
Victor's expression turned grim.
“Our surveillance team just intercepted a message.”
“From who?”
“Blackwood.”
The room fell silent.
“What does it say?” Daniel asked.
Victor swallowed.
“He says…”
May you like
Victor looked directly at Hannah.
“…the baby was never supposed to be born.”
