Chapter 6 - The Dark Garage

The heavy click of the pistol’s hammer echoing in the car sounded like a cannon.

Maria did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second.

She threw her entire body weight over Leo.

She shielded the small boy with her own fragile frame.

“No!” Maria screamed at the top of her lungs.

The driver aimed the gun straight at Maria’s trembling back.

His eyes were completely cold and empty in the rearview mirror.

“You should have just kept your mouth shut, Maria,” the driver said smoothly.

Suddenly, a massive boom shook the entire parking garage.

A stray cat had knocked over a towering pile of metal trash cans in the darkness.

The sudden, violent noise startled the driver.

He flinched, pulling the trigger prematurely.

The bullet shattered the thick, bulletproof glass of the side window instead of hitting its target.

Deafening ringing filled the confined space of the black sedan.

Glass shards rained down on Maria and Leo like deadly diamonds.

Adrenaline flooded every single vein in Maria’s body.

She grabbed the heavy, metal seatbelt buckle.

With a fierce, primal scream, she swung it as hard as she could at the driver’s face.

The heavy metal buckle smashed directly into the man’s nose.

He roared in agony, dropping the silenced pistol onto the front passenger seat.

Blood instantly poured down his chin and stained his crisp white shirt.

“Run, Leo! Run now!” Maria shrieked.

She kicked the passenger door open with both of her feet.

The lock had deactivated the moment the driver unbuckled his own seatbelt.

Leo scrambled out of the car, clutching the yellow envelope tightly to his chest.

His small sneakers slapped against the cold, damp concrete of the garage floor.

Maria tumbled out right behind him, her knees scraping harshly against the ground.

“Don’t look back!” she ordered the boy.

They sprinted blindly into the suffocating darkness of the abandoned structure.

Behind them, the driver was cursing violently in the front seat.

They could hear the heavy car door swing open.

They heard his heavy boots hit the concrete.

“You can’t hide from me!” the driver’s voice echoed off the concrete walls.

He was hunting them.

And they were completely trapped.
