Chapter 11 - The Crimson Syndicate

Vance held the black envelope up to the soft light of the penthouse.

The red insignia gleamed like fresh blood against the dark paper.

It was a wax seal stamped with an intricate image of an owl clutching a sword.

Maria felt a strange, cold knot form deep in her stomach.

“What is that?” Maria asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Leo leaned forward, his bright eyes locked onto the crimson stamp.

“My dad showed me that owl once,” Leo murmured softly.

“He told me it was a symbol of absolute protection.”

Vance nodded gravely, setting the envelope gently down on his desk.

“Your father was a very complex man, Leo,” Vance began to explain.

“He was the founding member of a private network known as the Crimson Syndicate.”

“It is not a criminal organization, despite how the name might sound.”

“It is a fiercely guarded alliance of the world’s most powerful people.”

“Judges, politicians, titans of industry, and brilliant minds.”

“They pooled their immense wealth and influence to protect the innocent from unstoppable corruption.”

Maria stared at the lawyer, struggling to process this massive revelation.

“So Mr. Sterling was basically a secret hero?” she asked in disbelief.

“He was the guardian of the Syndicate’s master ledger,” Vance corrected her.

“That ledger contains the names, bank accounts, and dark secrets of every corrupt official in this country.”

“It is the ultimate weapon against the untouchable elite.”

Vance stood up and began pacing the length of his lavish office.

“Victoria didn’t just want your father’s personal fortune,” Vance revealed.

“She was a planted operative.”

“A highly trained corporate spy sent by an underground cartel.”

“They wanted the ledger so they could blackmail the entire Syndicate.”

“Richard and Thomas were just greedy pawns she used to do her dirty work.”

Leo’s small hands clenched into tight fists on his lap.

“But they never found the ledger,” Leo stated confidently.

“Because my dad hid it where she could never, ever look.”

Vance stopped pacing and looked directly at the ten-year-old boy.

“Exactly, Leo,” Vance said, a hint of awe in his voice.

“And according to this black envelope, he left the only map to that ledger inside your mind.”

Maria gasped, instantly wrapping a protective arm around Leo’s shoulders.

“You can’t involve a child in this dangerous spy game!” Maria protested fiercely.

“He has already been through enough trauma for one lifetime!”

Vance held up his hands defensively to calm her down.

“I agree with you completely, Maria,” Vance assured her.

“But the cartel knows Victoria failed to secure the ledger tonight.”

“They will realize Leo is the only loose end remaining.”

“We have to retrieve the ledger before they send their real assassins after him.”

Leo looked up at Maria and offered her a brave, reassuring smile.

“It’s okay, Maria,” Leo said with absolute determination.

“I know exactly where we need to go.”
