Chapter 13 - The Betrayal in the Dark

Vance froze completely, slowly raising both of his hands into the air.
Maria pulled Leo tightly against her side, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Six massive men in black tactical gear stepped out from behind the concrete pillars.
They were heavily armed, wearing night-vision goggles and body armor.
Their weapons were all pointed directly at Vance’s chest.
A tall man in a sharp grey suit stepped out from the center of the formation.

He had silver hair and a polite, chilling smile on his face.
“Mr. Sterling was indeed a brilliant man, but he was always too trusting,” the man said smoothly.
Vance glared at the man with absolute hatred burning in his eyes.
“Senator Hayes,” Vance spat the name out like poison.
“I should have known you were the one funding Victoria’s little espionage operation.”
Senator Hayes chuckled softly, adjusting his silk tie.
“The Syndicate has outlived its usefulness, Jonathan,” Hayes replied casually.
“We have absolute power now.”
“I cannot have an old ledger ruining my upcoming presidential campaign.”
Maria stared at the politician, feeling a wave of intense disgust wash over her.
These were the people who ruled the country.
“Your tactical teams above ground were reassigned to a false location twenty minutes ago,” Hayes bragged.
“You are completely alone down here, Jonathan.”
“Now, step aside and let the boy fetch the ledger for me.”
Vance didn’t move a single inch.
“You will have to kill me first, Marcus,” Vance declared firmly.
Hayes sighed heavily, pulling a silver pistol from his suit jacket.
“That is precisely the plan, Jonathan,” Hayes said without a drop of remorse.
Before Hayes could pull the trigger, Leo suddenly shouted at the top of his lungs.
“Wait!” Leo cried out.
Every gun in the tunnel twitched toward the small boy.
“I’ll give it to you!” Leo promised, tears streaming down his face.
“Just don’t hurt Maria or Mr. Vance!”
“No, Leo, don’t!” Maria screamed, trying to pull him back.
But Leo violently wriggled out of her grasp and sprinted into the dark train car.
Hayes smiled a victorious, greedy smile.
“Smart child,” Hayes commented dryly.
“Go in there with him and grab the drive,” Hayes ordered two of his mercenaries.
The two heavily armed men rushed up the steps and disappeared into the train car.
Vance looked at Maria, offering her a microscopic, silent nod.
Maria understood instantly.
They just had to wait for the perfect distraction.
Ten seconds passed in suffocating, absolute silence.
Then, a massive electrical humming sound erupted from inside the train.
The two mercenaries screamed in sudden, blinding agony.

Bright flashes of blue electricity illuminated the windows of the vintage car.
Leo had triggered his father’s final security measure.
