Chapter 10 - Beyond the Grave

The penthouse office of Vance Legal Group was silent and impossibly warm.

Maria sat on a plush white sofa, drinking a cup of hot chamomile tea.

She finally felt physically safe, but her mind was still racing with trauma.

Leo sat beside her, perfectly calm, swinging his feet over the edge of the cushions.

Vance sat behind a massive mahogany desk, staring at the yellow envelope.

He carefully sliced the top open with a silver letter opener.

Inside was a single USB flash drive and a handwritten letter.

Vance adjusted his reading glasses and began to read the letter aloud.

“My dearest Leo,” the letter began, the father’s voice echoing through the words.

“If you are reading this, it means my time has finally run out.”

“I have known for three months that Victoria was slowly poisoning my tea.”

Maria gasped, dropping her porcelain teacup onto the saucer with a sharp clink.

“He knew?” she whispered in total disbelief.

“He let her kill him?”

Vance nodded grimly, his eyes scanning down the page.

“I discovered the heavy metals in my bloodwork during a routine physical,” the letter continued.

“The doctors told me the damage to my liver was already completely irreversible.”

“I had only weeks left to live, regardless of what I did.”

“If I confronted Victoria immediately, she and Richard would simply find another way.”

“They would have ensured that you, Leo, were taken care of next.”

Tears finally began to well up in Leo’s stoic, bright eyes.

His father had sacrificed his final days of comfort to trap the killers.

“I used my remaining time to secretly transfer every penny of my fortune into a blind trust.”

“This trust is solely in your name, Leo, and it cannot be touched until you are eighteen.”

“I also installed a hidden micro-camera inside the study’s smoke detector.”

Vance picked up the small, silver USB flash drive from the desk.

“The footage of Victoria pouring the lethal dose, and Thomas unlocking the door, is on this drive,” the letter concluded.

“I needed concrete proof so they could never wriggle out of a courtroom.”

“I trust Jonathan Vance with my life, and now, with yours.”

“Maria, if you are listening to this, thank you for protecting my son.”

“There is a separate account established in your name with five million dollars.”

Maria burst into overwhelming, ugly tears, covering her face with her hands.

It was more money than she could ever spend in ten lifetimes.

She would never have to scrub another floor or wear another uniform again.

Vance folded the letter carefully and looked at the two survivors.

“The police have already secured the flash drive data from my cloud servers,” Vance assured them.

“Victoria, Richard, and the late Thomas will face complete justice.”

Leo looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering city skyline.

The storm had finally passed, and the sun was beginning to rise.

“My dad was a genius,” Leo whispered proudly into the quiet room.

Vance smiled a sad, gentle smile.

“Yes, he was, Leo,” Vance agreed softly.

“But there is one final instruction in this envelope that we need to discuss.”

Vance pulled out a second, much smaller black envelope from the depths of the yellow one.

The seal on the back bore a strange, red insignia that Maria had never seen before.

“Your father wasn’t just a wealthy businessman, Leo,” Vance said cautiously.

“He was part of something much, much bigger.”
