Chapter 15 - The New Beginning

The flashing red and blue lights of the FBI convoy illuminated the foggy city streets.
It was a beautiful, crisp Sunday morning.
Senator Hayes was shoved into the back of a heavily armored federal transport van.
His face was pale, his political career and his freedom completely destroyed in a single night.
Jonathan Vance stood by his black SUV, speaking quietly with the federal director.

Maria sat on the hood of the vehicle, wrapping a warm woolen blanket around Leo’s shoulders.
The boy looked absolutely exhausted, but there was a profound peace in his bright eyes.
“You did it, Leo,” Maria whispered, brushing a messy lock of hair from his forehead.
“You kept your father’s promise.”
“You saved so many people today.”
Leo looked up at her, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking across his face.
“We did it together, Maria,” Leo corrected her softly.
“You didn’t run away when you had the chance.”
“You stayed and protected me when everyone else lied.”
Vance finished his conversation with the agents and walked over to them.
He handed Maria a sleek black folder with a gold seal on the front.
“What is this?” Maria asked, accepting the heavy folder cautiously.
“Those are the finalized documents for your new trust fund,” Vance explained kindly.
“And they also contain the absolute legal guardianship papers for Leo.”
Maria’s breath caught in her throat as tears instantly welled up in her eyes.
“Guardianship?” she repeated, looking down at the small boy.
“Your father explicitly stated in his final will that you were the only person he trusted to raise his son,” Vance confirmed.
“If you accept, you will never have to work another day in your life.”
“You will be Leo’s mother in every way that truly matters.”
Maria dropped the folder onto the hood of the car and pulled Leo into a desperate, crushing hug.
Leo hugged her back fiercely, burying his face into her shoulder.
“I would be deeply honored,” Maria cried softly into the crisp morning air.
Vance smiled, feeling a massive weight lift from his weary shoulders.
“The Crimson Syndicate will undergo a massive cleansing starting today,” Vance stated proudly.
“The corrupt elements have been completely surgically removed.”
“We will rebuild it the way your father originally intended, Leo.”
“And when you turn eighteen, you will take his rightful seat at the head of the table.”
Leo pulled back from Maria’s embrace and looked out at the rising sun.
The golden light reflected in the windows of the towering skyscrapers.
He was no longer just a frightened boy hiding in a dark pantry closet.
He was the wealthy heir to a secret empire of justice.

“I will be ready,” Leo promised quietly.
Maria took his hand, and together, they walked away from the chaos and into their new life.
