Chapter 9 - Beneath the Textile Mill.

Detective Ruiz ended the call and headed for the mill himself.

Elena hated being trapped in a hospital bed while the case moved without her.

Nathan hated it too, though for different reasons.

He paced between the window and the door.

Vanessa remained seated under the watch of hospital security.

Margaret had gone downstairs to meet the family's attorney.

For fifteen minutes, the only sound was the fetal monitor.

Then Elena's phone rang again.

Ruiz.

She answered immediately.

"Tell me they're safe."

"They are."

"We forced the exterior grate."

Elena exhaled.

"What did you find?"

Ruiz's footsteps echoed through the phone.

"You were right about the archive."

"There are filing cabinets, hard drives, cameras, printed emails."

"Daniel kept enough blackmail material to ruin half the people he ever met."

Nathan stopped pacing.

"And Caleb?"

Ruiz did not answer immediately.

"Alive."

Vanessa stood.

"Where?"

"Boiler room."

"He has a head wound and a stab injury in his side."

"Paramedics are treating him."

Elena looked toward Vanessa.

Relief crossed her face.

"Did he say who attacked him?"

"Not yet."

Ruiz continued walking.

"But the deed is not here."

Nathan swore quietly.

Elena asked the next question.

"The red folder?"

"Gone too."

"Then Daniel got both."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

Nathan turned sharply.

"You keep saying that."

Vanessa faced him.

"Because Daniel doesn't care about the red folder."

"He already knows what's in it."

"The deed matters."

"Something else was in Caleb's bag."

Elena's attention sharpened.

"What?"

Vanessa hesitated.

Ruiz heard it.

"This would be a good time to stop protecting secrets."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"A DNA report."

Nathan frowned.

"Whose DNA?"

Vanessa looked directly at Margaret's empty chair.

"Daniel's."

Elena waited.

Vanessa continued.

"He had Caleb obtain a sample from Margaret's hairbrush."

"He compared it to his own."

Nathan's expression went blank.

"Why?"

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Because Daniel believed Robert Howard wasn't his father."

The room became very still.

Elena thought of seven years of resentment.

The stolen money.

The blackmail.

The obsession with inheritance.

A man who believed he had been denied something that was never biologically his might become even more dangerous when proof existed.

"What did the report say?" Nathan asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I never saw it."

"Daniel said Caleb had the only printed copy."

Elena spoke slowly.

"Then maybe Daniel wasn't chasing the deed."

"Maybe he was chasing the DNA report."

Ruiz stopped walking.

"That makes sense."

Nathan looked sick.

"Why would Caleb keep it from him?"

Vanessa answered.

"Because Caleb realized Daniel was planning to betray him."

"He told me two days ago that he finally had something Daniel couldn't afford to lose."

Elena pressed a hand to her temple.

"So Caleb took the deed as insurance and the DNA report as leverage."

Ruiz said quietly.

"And somebody almost killed him for the bag."

A muffled voice sounded in the background of Ruiz's call.

Ruiz responded to someone away from the phone.

Then he came back.

Ruiz reached the textile mill eleven minutes after his trapped officers called for help.

The property rose beside the river like the skeleton of an industry everyone had agreed to forget.

Broken windows reflected the emergency lights.

Rust ran down the brick walls in dark streaks.

Inside, old machinery formed corridors of metal and shadow.

Ruiz kept Elena on speaker despite Nathan's objections.

She could not see the operation, but she could hear enough to understand the risk.

"South stair clear."

"Lower door reinforced from inside."

"Blood trail continues east."

Vanessa sat under guard and listened with her face drained of color.

"There is another entrance," she said.

Ruiz stopped.

"Where?"

"Behind the loading dock."

"My team checked it."

"Not the visible door."

Vanessa leaned forward.

"There is a drainage channel beneath the third loading platform."

Ruiz relayed the information.

Two officers found an iron hatch hidden beneath weeds and broken pallets.

The tunnel beyond smelled of river water and chemicals.

It led beneath the dye house.

Nathan looked at Vanessa.

"How many times were you there?"

"Four."

"And you never thought maybe the man living under an abandoned mill was not helping our family?"

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"You think I don't know how stupid I was?"

"I think stupid is a generous word for pushing Elena down stairs."

Elena interrupted before the argument consumed the room.

"What did Daniel keep in the lower level?"

Vanessa closed her eyes, reconstructing the space.

"A steel desk."

"Two filing cabinets."

"A cot."

"A wall covered in photographs."

"Anything medical?"

Vanessa opened her eyes.

"Yes."

Elena looked toward Nathan.

"What?"

"A lockbox with syringes."

Nathan's expression darkened.

"Why didn't you mention that before?"

"Because I thought they were for Daniel."

"For what?"

"He told me he had a heart condition."

Elena remembered Pierce's strange behavior at the mansion.

A physician with access to medication.

A hidden medical kit at Daniel's base.

The possibilities multiplied.

Ruiz's voice returned through the phone.

"We found the lower room."

A metal door groaned in the background.

An officer cursed.

Then Ruiz became very quiet.

"There's a chair in the center."

Elena's pulse increased.

"Is Caleb there?"

"No."

"Blood?"

"A lot of it."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Ruiz continued.

"But some of this is staged."

"How can you tell?" Nathan asked.

"There are bags from a medical blood supplier in the trash."

Elena looked at Vanessa.

"Pierce."

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

"He helped you."

"Or he wanted me to think he did."

The room seemed colder.

Ruiz found the steel desk.

Inside were photocopies of Robert Howard's correspondence, maps of the Mercer property, and detailed notes on the Howard family's routines.

One page contained Elena's prenatal schedule.

Another listed Nathan's private security codes.

A third contained Margaret's medication doses.

But the most disturbing item was a photograph of Dr. Pierce meeting Daniel in a parking lot two months earlier.

Nathan stared at the image Ruiz sent.

"Maybe Pierce was investigating him."

Elena wanted that to be true.

Then Ruiz found a ledger.

Payments had been made from a shell company to Pierce for seven years.

The first payment occurred three weeks after Daniel's supposed death.

Margaret sat down hard.

"Pierce certified the identification records after the accident."

Nathan turned.

"There was no body."

"There was blood, dental material, and medical documentation."

Margaret's voice broke.

"Pierce signed all of it."

Elena felt a terrible certainty form.

Daniel's death had not simply been faked.

A doctor had helped construct it.

Ruiz moved deeper into the lower level.

A noise sounded through his microphone.

Someone coughed.

Officers shouted.

Then Ruiz said they had found Caleb Mercer alive behind a false wall.

His shirt was soaked with blood, but most of the blood was not his.

He had a deep cut along his scalp and bruising around his wrists.

"Can he talk?" Elena asked.

"Barely."

Ruiz listened to the injured man.

The next words changed every assumption again.

Caleb said Daniel had not attacked him.

The man who struck him, tied him to the chair, and drew his blood into medical bags had been Dr. Pierce.

Caleb was transferred under armed guard while officers photographed every room beneath the mill.

The walls contained years of preparation.

This was not a hideout built after Elena found the letter.

It was infrastructure for a plan that had been waiting long before she entered the Howard family.

Caleb's first coherent statement from the emergency room gave Ruiz a clearer picture of Pierce's role.

Pierce had arrived at the mill claiming Daniel wanted to negotiate.

Caleb recognized him from old Howard legal meetings and allowed him close enough to speak privately.

Pierce injected him without warning.

When Caleb woke, he was tied to the chair while Pierce filled medical bags with purchased blood and spread it through the room.

"He wanted police to think I had been killed there," Caleb said through a split lip.

Ruiz asked why.

"Because dead men can't challenge deeds."

Caleb then described hearing Pierce argue with Daniel by phone.

Daniel wanted Elena brought to the lake house before midnight.

Pierce warned that the pregnancy made another physical attack too risky.

Daniel answered that the baby was exactly why Elena could not be allowed to remain in control of the Howard trust.

Nathan heard the recorded statement and turned away from the screen.

Elena understood the new motive immediately.

Her unborn child was not only family.

Under Robert Howard's trust structure, Nathan's first child would eventually receive voting rights Daniel could never reclaim.

The conspiracy had always been about inheritance as much as land.

"Caleb is conscious."

Elena leaned forward.

"Can he talk?"

"Barely."

Another pause.

"He says Daniel wasn't the person who attacked him."

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Then who was it?"

Ruiz answered with two words.

May you like

"Dr. Pierce."
