Chapter 8 - Blood in the Walls.

Vanessa stopped breathing for a second.
Elena watched the reaction closely.
It was not the outrage of someone falsely accused.
It was fear.
"Where did you find the car?" Vanessa asked.
Ruiz heard her voice through the phone.
His tone changed immediately.
"She's with you?"
"Yes."
"Get security in that room now."
Vanessa stood.
"I didn't hurt Caleb."
Margaret moved between her and Elena again.
"Sit down."
Vanessa ignored her.
"Detective, I drove his car yesterday."
Ruiz paused.
"Why?"
"He said someone was following him."
"He asked me to move it from a garage downtown to the north station."
"I left it there."
Ruiz's silence carried suspicion.
Elena pressed the phone closer.
"How much blood?"
"Enough to concern me."
"Not enough to prove someone died."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Daniel found him."
Ruiz responded quickly.
"How do you know?"
"Because Daniel always said Caleb was temporary."
"He hated him."
"He called him a man with a grievance and no discipline."
Margaret's jaw tightened.
"That sounds like Daniel."
A hospital security officer appeared at the door.
Elena raised one hand.
"Wait outside, please."
The officer hesitated, then obeyed after Margaret nodded.
Ruiz continued.
"Vanessa, where were you between four and six this morning?"
"At my apartment."
"Alone?"
Vanessa looked toward Elena.
"Yes."
Ruiz exhaled quietly.
"Then you have no alibi."
Vanessa's frustration broke through.
"Because I didn't know I would need one."
Elena studied her.
The answer sounded genuine.
That did not make Vanessa innocent.
It only meant she might be innocent of this particular crime.
"What was Caleb carrying?" Elena asked.
Vanessa frowned.
"When?"
"When you last saw him."
"A canvas messenger bag."
"Brown."
"He never let it out of his sight."
Elena remembered the missing red folder and original deed.
"Could both documents fit inside?"
"Easily."
Ruiz spoke.
"We didn't find a bag in the car."
That meant Caleb had either escaped with the evidence or someone had taken it from him.
Elena looked at the brass key.
"We need to search the textile mill."
Ruiz answered immediately.
"My team is heading there."
Vanessa stepped closer to the phone.
"Don't use the front entrance."
"Why?"
"Daniel knows the security system."
"He used the mill after he disappeared."
Margaret stared at her.
"How could you possibly know that?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with shame.
"Because I've been there with him."
Nathan walked into the room at that exact moment.
He stopped in the doorway.
"You've been where with Daniel?"
Vanessa turned slowly.
Nathan's face had lost every trace of softness.
"How long have you known my brother was alive?"
Vanessa did not answer.
"How long?"
"Four months."
The confession struck Nathan like a physical blow.
"You sat at my table."
"You looked my mother in the eye."
"You watched us mourn him for seven years."
Vanessa whispered.
"He told me he would explain everything when it was over."
Nathan laughed once without humor.
"And you believed him?"
Vanessa looked at Elena.
"I believed what I wanted to believe."
Nathan stepped into the room.
"Ruiz found something else at the mansion."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"What?"
Nathan held up a printed photograph.
It showed Elena asleep in her own bedroom.
The image had been taken from inside the room.
On the back, someone had written six words.
SHE NEVER KNEW WHO WAS WATCHING.
Elena stared at the photograph until the room seemed to narrow around it.
She recognized the nightgown.
She recognized the book lying open beside her pillow.
She even recognized the half-empty glass of water on the nightstand.
The photograph had been taken three nights earlier.
After Ruiz's team began watching the house.
"Where did you find it?" Elena asked.
Nathan's voice was quiet.
"Inside the wall behind our headboard."
Margaret sat down slowly.
"Someone was inside the walls?"
Nathan shook his head.
"There is an old service passage."
"It was sealed when we renovated."
Vanessa looked toward the floor.
Nathan noticed.
"You know about it."
She hesitated.
"Daniel showed me blueprints."
Elena's anger sharpened.
"Why would he need photographs of me sleeping?"
Vanessa looked genuinely disturbed.
"He never told me about that."
Nathan stepped closer.
"What else didn't he tell you?"
Vanessa's voice broke.
"A lot, apparently."
Detective Ruiz remained on speakerphone.
"Nathan, did you secure the passage?"
"Officers are checking it now."
Ruiz replied.
"Nobody enters without body cameras."
Elena looked at Nathan.
"The hidden camera in the clock was installed after this photo."
"If Daniel had access to the service passages, he could have watched the installation."
Ruiz went silent.
The implication was brutal.
Their trap had never been secret.
Daniel had known Elena intended to record Vanessa.
He had allowed it because the distraction benefited him.
Elena felt foolish for the first time.
Then she rejected the feeling.
Daniel had information.
That did not mean he controlled the outcome.
"He thinks he's ahead," she said.
Nathan looked at her.
"He probably is."
"No."
Elena touched the small rise of her stomach.
"He knew our plan."
"He did not know how Vanessa would behave once the plan broke."
Vanessa stared at her.
Elena continued.
"He expected you to run."
"Instead, you came here."
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because I finally understood he would let me take the blame for everything."
"Exactly."
Elena picked up the brass key.
"What else did he say about the mill?"
Vanessa thought for a moment.
"There are two underground rooms."
"One was an old boiler chamber."
"The other was used to store payroll records."
"Daniel turned it into an office."
Ruiz's voice sharpened.
"Any cameras?"
"Yes."
"Old wired ones."
"He didn't trust cloud systems."
Elena looked toward the phone.
"Then if Caleb went there, the cameras may show who followed him."
Ruiz agreed.
"Assuming Daniel hasn't destroyed the recordings."
Vanessa shook her head.
"He wouldn't."
Everyone looked at her.
"Daniel keeps everything."
"Calls, photographs, contracts, threats."
"He says memory is weak but leverage lasts forever."
Elena felt the first genuine opening in the case.
"Then his archive is there."
Vanessa nodded.
Nathan sat on the edge of the empty chair.
"Why did you help him?"
Vanessa looked at him for a long time.
"Because he promised that when Elena was gone, you would need someone."
Nathan's face hardened.
"You thought pushing my pregnant wife down the stairs would bring me back to you?"
Vanessa began crying silently.
No performance remained.
"I wasn't thinking like a sane person."
Elena answered coldly.
"That does not make what you did smaller."
Vanessa nodded.
"I know."
The possibility of Daniel's private archive changed Ruiz's priorities immediately.
He ordered the officers searching the Howard mansion to photograph the service passage before touching anything inside it.
The first images arrived on Elena's phone minutes later.
A narrow corridor ran behind the bedroom walls.
Fresh footprints crossed decades of dust.
A folding chair had been placed opposite the opening behind Elena's headboard.
On the floor beside it lay two empty coffee cups and a pair of disposable gloves.
Someone had not simply passed through.
Someone had sat there and watched.
Nathan looked away from the photographs.
"I slept six feet from that wall."
Elena did not answer.
"I was there," he continued.
"How did I not hear anything?"
Vanessa spoke quietly.
"The passage is insulated."
Nathan turned toward her.
"You knew that too?"
"Daniel showed me the renovation drawings."
"You keep remembering useful details after they become evidence."
Vanessa flinched.
Elena intervened before the room returned to blame instead of facts.
"What else was on those drawings?"
Vanessa thought for a moment.
"A utility chase from the west basement to the attic."
"Could someone reach the security room through it?"
"Maybe."
Ruiz relayed the detail to his team.
An officer found a removable panel behind the security rack.
The wiring to the camera system had been cut and reconnected more than once.
That explained why the mansion's recordings had failed unpredictably for months.
Daniel had been testing access long before Elena installed the hidden camera in the clock.
Ruiz asked for fingerprints.
The officer found only wiped surfaces.
Then he noticed a small strip of medical tape caught on a screw head.
The tape carried a partial blue ink mark.
Pierce's clinic used blue inventory stamps on every roll of medical tape.
Nathan stared at the photograph.
"That could be coincidence."
Elena looked at him.
"It could."
Neither of them believed it.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"Daniel said there was a doctor who owed him."
Elena's attention snapped toward her.
"When did he say that?"
"Months ago."
"Why didn't you mention it?"
"Because I thought he meant someone helping him stay hidden."
Ruiz's voice hardened over the speaker.
"From now on, you tell us every sentence Daniel ever said that sounded strange, whether you understood it or not."
Vanessa nodded.
The case was no longer a collection of separate threats.
The hidden passage, the altered security system, Pierce's access, and Daniel's archive were beginning to form one structure.
Elena could finally see its shape.
Someone had prepared the Howard mansion to be watched, entered, and manipulated from the inside.
The only question was how many people had helped build the doors.
A notification sounded from Ruiz's side of the call.
He stopped speaking.
Then his voice changed.
"My team reached the mill."
Elena sat straighter.
"And?"
"The service door is open."
"There's a trail of blood leading downstairs."
A second pause followed.
May you like
"And someone just locked my officers inside."
