Chapter 12 - The Son Nobody Expected.

The rain against the windows became the loudest sound in the room.

Elena stared at Dr. Pierce.

Vanessa stared at him too.

Caleb slowly lowered the pistol.

Daniel did not move at all.

"Say that again," Daniel whispered.

Pierce closed his eyes.

"Nathan is my biological son."

Daniel laughed once.

It was a small, broken sound.

"No."

Pierce looked at him with a grief that seemed decades old.

"Your mother and I were together again briefly after you were born."

"Robert was traveling for months."

"We ended it before Nathan was born."

Daniel's voice rose for the first time.

"No."

Elena understood the cruelty of the revelation.

Daniel had spent years believing Robert's rejection came from doubts about his blood.

Instead, he had been Robert's biological son all along.

Nathan, the brother Daniel believed had been chosen because he was the legitimate heir, was the one who was not biologically Robert's.

Daniel turned toward Elena.

"You knew?"

"No."

"Nathan knew?"

"No."

Pierce spoke.

"Nobody knew until Caleb forced the test."

Caleb gave him a hard look.

"Daniel paid for the test."

"I obtained the samples."

Pierce shook his head.

"You obtained the wrong sample first."

Caleb frowned.

Pierce continued.

"The hairbrush in Margaret's room contained Nathan's hair."

"Not hers."

Elena's pulse quickened.

"So the first report showed Daniel and Nathan were not full brothers."

Pierce nodded.

"Daniel assumed that meant Robert was not his father."

"I ran a second test using an old pathology sample from Robert."

Daniel looked almost sick.

"And Robert was mine."

"Yes."

"Nathan was yours."

Pierce whispered.

"Yes."

Daniel stood slowly.

His entire identity had just inverted in front of them.

For a moment, Elena thought the truth might break him open.

Instead, it made him colder.

"Then Nathan has no right to the company."

Elena saw the trap immediately.

Even now, Daniel reduced truth to ownership.

"That's not how inheritance works," she said.

"Robert legally recognized Nathan as his son."

Daniel glared at her.

"You think paper makes blood irrelevant?"

Elena glanced at the deed in his hand.

"You've spent this entire night proving paper matters to you."

Caleb almost smiled.

Daniel noticed.

"Something funny?"

Caleb's expression hardened.

"Only that the Howard family keeps discovering new ways to argue over things stolen from other people."

He pointed toward the deed.

"That land belongs to my family."

Daniel tightened his grip on it.

"Your grandfather lost it."

"Your grandfather forged the foreclosure."

"And you planned to blackmail me with the DNA report."

"I planned to make sure you didn't bury the deed again."

The alliance was cracking in front of Elena.

Outside, Ruiz and his team were still listening.

Daniel did not know the transmitter remained active.

Elena needed him talking.

"What was the real plan for me?" she asked.

Daniel looked at her.

"Vanessa was supposed to frighten you."

Vanessa snapped.

"You told me to push her."

Daniel shrugged.

"I told you Elena would be protected."

"I also knew you were angry enough to make the scene believable."

Elena felt Vanessa tense beside her.

"So the fall was staged by both sides," Elena said.

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

"You thought you were trapping Vanessa."

"I was using your trap to empty the house."

"Everyone played their part."

Elena shook her head.

Pierce's declaration that Nathan was his biological son detonated every alliance in the room.

Daniel looked at Nathan's absence as though he could somehow see his younger brother through the walls.

His entire grievance had been built around the belief that Robert Howard replaced him with Nathan.

Now Pierce claimed Robert had not fathered Nathan at all.

"You're lying," Daniel said.

Pierce's face remained exhausted but steady.

"I wish I were."

"Mother would never—"

"Your mother didn't know at first."

Daniel's expression changed.

Margaret was not in the room to defend herself.

Pierce continued anyway.

"Robert knew before Nathan was born."

"Then why did he keep him?"

"Because Robert loved your mother more than he hated me."

Daniel laughed with open contempt.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Elena watched Pierce carefully.

"Why tell him now?"

Pierce looked at her.

"Because this is what Daniel has wanted for seven years."

"A paternity secret?"

"A reason to prove Robert was a hypocrite."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

That was confirmation enough.

Vanessa stood near Elena, trembling but attentive.

"You helped fake his death," she said to Pierce.

Pierce did not deny it.

"Yes."

"You drugged Caleb."

"Yes."

"You changed Elena's vitamins."

A long pause followed.

"I prepared the capsules."

Nathan's voice suddenly came through Elena's earpiece from the command vehicle.

Ruiz had routed the audio.

"Ask him who ordered it."

Elena looked directly at Pierce.

"Who told you to poison me?"

Daniel smiled as though the answer bored him.

Pierce looked at the floor.

"Daniel."

Daniel's smile vanished.

"Careful."

Pierce raised his head.

"I am finished being careful."

The confession changed the room.

Aaron Mercer lowered the pistol slightly.

"You said nobody would get hurt."

Daniel turned on him.

"People were already hurt before you were born."

Aaron's grip tightened.

Elena understood that Aaron was not simply an armed accomplice.

He was another person Daniel had recruited through inherited anger.

"Your brother is alive," Elena told him.

Aaron stared at her.

"Caleb?"

"Police found him at the mill."

Daniel snapped.

"She's lying."

Elena kept her eyes on Aaron.

"He told Detective Ruiz that Pierce attacked him."

Aaron looked toward Pierce.

Pierce nodded once.

Daniel moved between them.

"You think they will give the land back because Caleb survived?"

Elena answered.

"The land was already supposed to be returned."

"That deed is worthless without the mineral surveys."

"Then why are you willing to kill for it?"

Daniel's nostrils flared.

For the first time, his calm slipped.

Vanessa noticed too.

"Because the shell company owns the mining rights," she said.

Daniel turned toward her.

Vanessa's fear remained, but so did a new understanding.

"You bought the subsurface rights after everyone thought you were dead."

Daniel said nothing.

"That's why you need the deed destroyed," Elena continued.

"If the Mercer title is restored retroactively, your shell company's claim collapses."

Aaron looked at Daniel.

"You told me recovering the deed would return the property to my family."

Daniel's silence answered him.

Aaron lowered the pistol another inch.

Elena spoke gently.

"He didn't bring you here to restore anything."

"He brought you here to destroy the document that could restore it."

Daniel lunged for Aaron's gun.

The struggle lasted less than a second.

A shot tore into the window frame.

The lake house went dark.

Elena dropped behind the sofa as glass scattered across the floor.

Vanessa landed beside her.

Outside, Ruiz shouted commands.

Inside, Daniel cursed in the darkness.

Aaron shouted that he no longer had the weapon.

Elena heard someone running toward the rear hall.

Then Pierce whispered from somewhere near the overturned chair.

"Elena."

She crawled toward his voice.

"What?"

"Daniel doesn't know about the second executed deed."

Her heart pounded.

"You told us there were two."

"I told you there were two copies."

Pierce's breath shook.

"I never told Daniel where the surviving original is."

A flashlight beam swept past the doorway.

Pierce leaned closer.

"Robert gave it to Margaret the night Daniel disappeared."

Elena froze.

Margaret had insisted she did not know where it was.

If Pierce was telling the truth, Nathan's mother had been holding the most dangerous document in the entire case for seven years.

Outside the dark lake house, Ruiz heard enough of Pierce's confession to order immediate warrants for every account linked to the doctor.

The financial trail began freezing while the people inside were still fighting over the gun.

For the first time, Daniel's money started losing its ability to move faster than the truth.

In the darkness after the gunshot, Nathan could hear the confrontation through Elena's transmitter but could not see her.

Those twenty seconds became the longest of his life.

He tried to leave the command vehicle twice.

An officer physically blocked the door.

"Detective's order."

"My wife is in there."

"And running into a dark house with an unsecured gun makes her safer how?"

Nathan stopped because there was no answer that did not come from panic.

Margaret sat beside him, white-faced and silent.

Then Pierce's paternity confession reached the speaker.

Nathan turned toward his mother.

She did not deny it.

"You knew," he whispered.

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Since you were three months old."

"And Dad?"

"From before you were born."

Nathan laughed once without humor.

"Another secret everyone thought was protecting me."

Margaret reached for him.

He moved his hand away.

Inside the house, Elena was trying to survive Daniel's conspiracy.

Outside, Nathan realized the family structure he had spent his life defending had never been as simple as the name he carried.

"Not everyone."

Daniel frowned.

Elena looked toward Caleb.

"He has been recording you too."

Daniel turned.

Caleb's face revealed the truth before he could deny it.

A tiny red light blinked from the breast pocket of his jacket.

Daniel lunged.

The pistol fired.

May you like

And the lake house went dark.
