Chapter 2 - The Doctor Who Knew Too Much.

Dr. Pierce covered the phone with his hand as though he were checking Elena's ribs.
His face remained professionally calm.
His voice did not.
"Can you hear me?"
Elena gave the smallest possible movement of her fingers.
Yes.
Pierce leaned closer.
"Don't speak."
Vanessa watched him from the third stair.
"Is she conscious?"
Pierce ignored her.
He checked Elena's pupils, then placed one hand carefully against the protective padding beneath her cardigan.
His fingertips found its edge.
His eyes sharpened.
He knew Elena had prepared for the fall.
The question was how.
Nathan knelt opposite him.
"Is the baby okay?"
Pierce's voice softened.
"I need imaging and fetal monitoring before I promise anything."
Nathan closed his eyes for a moment.
Vanessa descended another step.
"She shouldn't have attacked me."
Pierce looked up.
"A pregnant woman attacked you at the edge of a staircase?"
The skepticism was unmistakable.
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
"You weren't here."
"No."
Pierce glanced at the antique clock above the landing.
"Apparently I wasn't."
Elena noticed where he looked.
The hidden camera.
Her pulse quickened.
Only three people knew that camera existed.
Elena.
Detective Ruiz.
And the technician Ruiz had brought in after midnight two days earlier.
Dr. Pierce was not one of them.
The ambulance siren finally sounded beyond the front gates.
Nathan exhaled in relief.
Vanessa did not.
She stepped away from the staircase and reached into her purse.
Margaret noticed.
"Who are you calling?"
Vanessa quickly lowered the purse.
"My lawyer."
"Why would you need a lawyer if this was an accident?"
Vanessa stared at the older woman.
Margaret had asked the question gently.
That made it worse.
"Because Nathan will blame me no matter what happened."
Nathan rose halfway to his feet.
"My wife is on the floor and you're already thinking about blame?"
Vanessa's tears returned.
"I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
"From her."
Elena listened as the words spilled faster.
Vanessa was losing control.
That was supposed to help the case.
Instead, Elena found herself watching Dr. Pierce.
He had moved one hand beneath his medical bag.
A tiny metal object appeared between his fingers.
It looked like a key.
He slipped it beneath Elena's palm.
Then he whispered without moving his lips.
"Your bedroom safe."
Elena's confusion must have shown.
Pierce leaned closer.
"Someone opened it last night."
Cold spread through her faster than the pain.
The safe contained copies of every piece of evidence Elena had gathered before contacting Ruiz.
It also contained a sealed letter from Nathan's late father.
A letter that changed the ownership of the Howard estate.
Elena had never told Vanessa it existed.
She had barely told Nathan.
Paramedics entered with a stretcher.
Pierce stepped aside.
Dr. Pierce's awareness of the hidden phone changed the danger immediately.
Elena had met him dozens of times during family dinners and charity galas.
He was the physician Margaret trusted when she refused to visit a hospital.
He had delivered Nathan's younger cousin.
He had signed Robert Howard's death certificate.
Until that afternoon, Elena had placed him in the category of people who knew too much because wealthy families paid them to know too much.
Now his hand concealed her phone with the precision of a man protecting evidence.
That meant he either knew about Ruiz's operation or knew enough about the threat to recognize one.
Neither possibility made Elena feel safer.
Pierce checked her pupils while speaking in a voice meant for the room.
"She needs imaging and fetal monitoring."
Vanessa came down one more step.
"Can she hear us?"
Pierce did not look at her.
"I am more concerned with whether the baby is stable."
The sentence struck the room harder than an accusation.
Nathan went pale.
Margaret closed her eyes briefly.
Vanessa pressed a hand to her mouth, but Elena saw no genuine shock in the gesture.
She had threatened the pregnancy before.
She understood exactly what the fall could have done.
That knowledge made Elena's anger colder.
The paramedics arrived with practiced efficiency.
One cut away the sleeve of Elena's cardigan to place a blood-pressure cuff.
The other asked Nathan how far along she was.
"Twenty-one weeks," Nathan answered.
His voice cracked on the number.
Elena wanted to reach for him.
She did not dare break the performance yet.
Pierce leaned close as the paramedic adjusted the stretcher.
"The detective is not the only person listening," he murmured.
Elena's eyes moved toward him.
Pierce's jaw tightened.
"Your bedroom was searched before dawn."
Elena felt a fresh wave of fear.
Only Helen and Nathan knew she had moved Robert's sealed letter into the bedroom safe.
Ruiz knew because she had photographed it for the case file.
If someone had searched that room, the threat extended beyond Vanessa.
Pierce straightened before she could signal a question.
Vanessa immediately moved closer.
"What did she say?"
"Nothing," Pierce replied.
"Then why were you whispering?"
"Because injured patients do not need a room full of people shouting over them."
Vanessa stared at him.
Pierce stared back until she looked away.
Nathan walked beside the stretcher as the paramedics lifted Elena.
His hand hovered near hers without touching.
"I'm coming with you."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Nathan, the police will need someone here."
"Then you stay."
"This is my house."
"She is my wife."
For the first time since the fall, Elena heard certainty in his voice.
It should have comforted her.
Instead, she wondered why certainty had required the sight of her on a stretcher.
Outside, the ambulance doors stood open beneath a white afternoon sky.
Elena finally allowed herself to breathe more deeply.
Pain radiated across her shoulder and lower back.
The baby had not moved since the fall.
That terrified her more than Vanessa, the missing letter, or Dr. Pierce's warning.
As the stretcher crossed the threshold, Elena felt the faintest flutter beneath her palm.
Once.
Then again.
Her eyes burned with relief.
Nathan saw the change in her face.
"What is it?"
Elena risked the smallest whisper.
"The baby moved."
Nathan bent his head until his forehead nearly touched hers.
For one second, the mansion, Vanessa, the cameras, and the investigation disappeared.
Then Pierce's hand closed around Nathan's shoulder.
"Go with her."
Nathan looked back.
Pierce's expression was grave.
"I need to check something upstairs before the police arrive."
Elena remembered the searched bedroom.
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the stretcher.
She wanted to stop him.
But Vanessa was watching.
So Elena said nothing.
The ambulance doors began to close.
Through the narrowing gap, she saw Pierce turn toward the staircase.
Vanessa watched him go.
And for the first time that afternoon, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
Elena watched the hospital clock move while every minute made the unanswered questions heavier.
She understood now that the case would not be solved by one confession.
It would be solved by tracing who had known what, and when they had known it.
That meant every familiar face had to be treated as evidence until trust could be earned again.
The first hospital scan showed no fracture, but the doctor warned Elena that bruising and stress could still trigger complications later.
That warning gave Nathan another reason to stay beside her bed even when Ruiz asked him to step outside.
Elena finally told him to go.
"If you hover over me while the evidence disappears, I will recover just to be angry at you."
Nathan did not smile.
"That's not funny."
"It wasn't meant to be."
He squeezed her hand once and left with Ruiz.
For the next twenty minutes, Elena lay alone except for the monitor and the nurse checking her blood pressure.
The quiet allowed fear to surface without an audience.
She imagined the baby's heartbeat slowing.
She imagined waking to another person standing beside her bed.
She imagined Vanessa rewriting the entire story while Elena was sedated.
Then Helen appeared at the doorway carrying Elena's overnight bag.
"Mr. Nathan asked me to bring this."
Elena studied the housekeeper.
"Did you see anyone near my room before the blackout?"
Helen hesitated.
"I saw Dr. Pierce in the west corridor this morning."
"Why was he there?"
"He said Mrs. Margaret had called him."
Elena's stomach tightened.
Margaret had been at a charity breakfast across town that morning.
Helen understood the implication at the same moment.
"I should tell the detective."
"Yes."
Helen turned to go, then stopped.
"Mrs. Howard, there is something else."
"What?"
"Dr. Pierce asked me last week whether the antique clock still worked."
Elena stared at her.
The clock contained Ruiz's camera.
Pierce had noticed the one object Elena most needed him not to notice.
As they prepared Elena for transport, Vanessa moved closer to Nathan.
"I can come to the hospital."
Nathan turned toward her.
"No."
The word stopped everyone.
Vanessa's face hardened.
Then the mansion lights went out.
The foyer plunged into darkness.
A second later, glass shattered upstairs.
May you like
And somebody ran toward Elena's bedroom.
