Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Never Drowned.

Nathan's hand tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned white.

"Daniel."

Silence answered him.

Then the man on the line laughed softly.

"Seven years and that's all I get?"

Margaret stepped closer to the phone.

"Where are you?"

The laughter stopped.

"Still pretending you missed me, Mother?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

Nathan spoke before she could answer.

"If Vanessa hurt Elena for you, this ends now."

"Vanessa does what Vanessa wants."

Daniel sounded almost amused.

"That's why she's useful."

Elena looked toward Ruiz.

He was tracing the call through a device connected to his phone.

Daniel seemed to sense it.

"Detective Ruiz is there, isn't he?"

Ruiz said nothing.

"Tell him the number will be dead before he finds the tower."

Ruiz's expression did not change.

Elena spoke.

"Then why call?"

There was a pause.

"I wanted to hear your voice."

"Why?"

"Because you're the only person in that family who understood the game before it started."

Elena's stomach tightened.

"You broke into my safe."

"No."

"I had someone do it."

Nathan stepped forward.

"Caleb?"

"Caleb is angry."

"Angry men are predictable."

Elena looked at Ruiz again.

Daniel was speaking about Caleb like an employee, not a partner.

"What did you take?" Elena asked.

"Something my father stole from me."

Nathan's face hardened.

"The letter wasn't yours."

"Everything in that house was supposed to be mine."

The old resentment broke through for the first time.

Then Daniel recovered.

"Until our father decided you were the good son."

Nathan's voice lowered.

"You stole from the company."

"I recovered what belonged to me."

"You forged contracts."

"I learned from the family."

Margaret flinched.

Daniel heard the silence.

"Ask Mother about the Mercer land."

"Ask her how many lives paid for that chandelier hanging over your perfect foyer."

Nathan looked toward Margaret.

She stared at the floor.

Daniel continued.

"I found the original foreclosure deed when I was twenty-nine."

"Dad begged me to burn it."

"I told him I would rather own him with it."

Elena heard the truth hidden inside the confession.

Daniel had not been trying to expose injustice.

He had been trying to monetize it.

"You blackmailed your own father," she said.

Daniel laughed once.

"Now I see why Nathan married you."

"You're much smarter than he is."

Nathan did not react.

Elena continued.

"And Vanessa?"

"She thinks she loves my brother."

"I gave her a reason to believe you were the obstacle."

Elena's jaw tightened.

"You convinced her I was stealing the estate."

"I showed her enough documents to make the lie comfortable."

Ruiz wrote quickly.

Elena realized Daniel was talking too much.

Not accidentally.

He wanted them focused on Vanessa.

"What are you doing right now?" Elena asked.

The line went quiet.

Then Daniel said something entirely different.

"Ask the detective how many officers are still at the mansion."

Ruiz's eyes sharpened.

Nathan looked at him.

Ruiz immediately dialed his team.

No answer.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Daniel's voice returned.

"You should have protected the house."

The call ended.

Ruiz was already moving toward the door.

Margaret grabbed his sleeve.

"What's in the house?"

Elena answered before he could.

"The only original proof that can return the Mercer land."

Ruiz stopped.

Elena's blood ran cold.

The document was not in her safe.

It was hidden inside the antique clock above the staircase.

The same clock containing the camera.

And Daniel knew exactly where to look.

For several seconds after Daniel's warning call ended, nobody in the hospital room moved.

Ruiz replayed the final line from the recording.

The only original proof that can return the Mercer land.

He looked at Elena.

"You said the document is in the antique clock."

Elena nodded.

"Behind the pendulum housing."

Margaret stared at her.

"Robert used that compartment."

Elena turned.

"You knew it existed?"

"I knew he hid things there when the boys were young."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Margaret looked genuinely ashamed.

"Because until today, I thought the clock was just another place where Robert hid letters he didn't want to explain."

Nathan rubbed a hand across his face.

"Can Daniel open it without damaging the camera?"

Elena thought about the narrow latch Ruiz's technician had used.

"If he knows exactly where to press, yes."

Ruiz called his team at the mansion and ordered two officers to remain within sight of the foyer clock.

He did not tell them what was hidden inside.

"The fewer people who know, the better," he said.

Elena agreed.

Daniel had already demonstrated that information leaked through the Howard household faster than anyone admitted.

Nathan paced beside the window.

"If the deed is still there, we move it."

Ruiz shook his head.

"Not yet."

"Why not?"

"Because Daniel thinks he knows where it is."

Nathan stared at him.

"You want to use it as bait?"

"I want to see who comes for it."

Elena understood the logic and hated it.

The mansion had already become a trap once that day.

Turning it into another felt reckless.

But moving the deed could tell Daniel that his information was still reaching them.

Margaret sat beside Elena.

"What exactly does the deed restore?"

"Legal title to the Mercer family, if the signatures and recording history hold up."

"And the mining rights?"

"That depends on what happened after the fraudulent transfer."

Nathan stopped pacing.

"Which could mean hundreds of millions."

Ruiz looked at him.

"Enough for a dead man to come home?"

Nathan gave no answer.

Elena touched the edge of her blanket.

Daniel had framed his return as revenge against the family.

Money alone did not explain the years of surveillance, the fake death, or the obsession with Robert's papers.

He wanted something larger than ownership.

He wanted the power to decide which version of the Howard past survived.

Ruiz's phone vibrated.

His team reported that the antique clock had not been opened since the blackout.

The deed was still inside.

For the first time in hours, Elena felt they were one move ahead.

Then hospital security called from downstairs.

Vanessa Cole had just entered the building.

She was asking to see Elena.

And she was carrying a brass key.

Ruiz ordered officers to the mansion before he left the hospital room.

Elena tried to get out of bed.

Nathan stopped her.

"Absolutely not."

"Daniel is going after the deed."

"And you were pushed down a staircase two hours ago."

Elena swung her feet toward the floor anyway.

A nurse appeared in the doorway as though summoned by Nathan's panic.

"Mrs. Howard."

Her tone ended the argument.

"You are staying in that bed until the obstetrician clears you."

Elena stared at Nathan.

"Then you go."

He hesitated.

"I'm not leaving you."

"Nathan."

She lowered her voice.

"If Daniel destroys that deed, Caleb's family loses the only clean path to restitution."

"And Daniel keeps the leverage that started all of this."

Nathan looked toward Margaret.

She nodded reluctantly.

"Go."

Nathan kissed Elena's forehead and left with Ruiz.

Margaret remained behind.

For several minutes, neither woman spoke.

Then Margaret sat beside the bed.

"You hid the deed in the clock."

Elena nodded.

"Ruiz wanted the original somewhere Vanessa would never search."

Margaret gave a tired smile.

"She hates that clock."

"She says it makes the foyer look like a funeral home."

The brief humor vanished quickly.

Margaret folded her hands.

"I should have told Nathan everything years ago."

Elena watched her.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because shame can feel like protection when you've carried it long enough."

She looked toward the fetal monitor.

"I told myself the fraud belonged to the generation before us."

"Then Daniel found it."

"And suddenly the past was alive again."

Elena thought of Vanessa at the top of the staircase.

"The past always collects interest."

Margaret looked at her with surprise.

Then she nodded.

A message appeared on Elena's phone.

It came from Nathan.

CLOCK OPEN. DEED GONE.

Elena's chest tightened.

A second message arrived.

CAMERA REMOVED.

Then a third.

ONE OFFICER INJURED. CALEB MISSING.

Margaret read Elena's face.

"What happened?"

Elena handed her the phone.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Before either could speak, the hospital room door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

She had changed clothes.

The burgundy dress was gone.

She now wore a plain gray sweater and black trousers.

Her makeup had been wiped away.

Without the performance, she looked exhausted.

Margaret rose.

"How did you get in here?"

Vanessa ignored her.

She looked directly at Elena.

"I need five minutes."

Elena's hand moved toward the nurse call button.

Vanessa lifted both palms.

"If I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn't have come alone."

Margaret stepped between them.

"You already hurt her."

Vanessa's eyes filled, but this time the tears looked real.

"I know."

The admission surprised Elena more than denial would have.

Vanessa reached slowly into her sweater pocket.

Margaret tensed.

Vanessa pulled out a small brass key.

"Daniel doesn't have the deed."

Elena stared at her.

"What?"

"Caleb does."

"And Daniel is going to kill him for it."

She placed the key on the bedside table.

May you like

"I know where Caleb is going."
