Chapter 6 – The Extraction Order

Chapter 6 – The Extraction Order
The room went deathly still.
No one breathed.

No one spoke.
Every eye remained fixed on the satellite phone.
The message still glowed across its screen.
HAS THE PACKAGE BEEN MOVED?
Daniel looked at me.
"What are the odds they're referring to Lily?"
I didn't hesitate.
"High."
"Too high to ignore."
Nora immediately turned to one of the agents.
"Lock this property down."
"Nobody enters."
"Nobody leaves."
The agent spoke into his radio.
Within seconds, voices crackled back.
Outside, more vehicles pulled into the neighborhood.
Black SUVs.
Marked FBI units.
An unmarked ambulance.
Neighbors began peeking through their curtains.
One by one.
Daniel pocketed the satellite phone.
"We're treating this as an active threat."
Grant suddenly stepped forward.
"They wouldn't hurt her."
His voice sounded desperate.
"They need leverage."
"They don't kill leverage."
I stared at him.
"You sound awfully familiar with their methods."
His shoulders slumped.
"I heard things."
"What things?"
He rubbed both hands across his face.
"They called children... insurance."
The words hit me like a punch.
No one in the room spoke.
Grant continued.
"They said families kept people loyal."
"If someone became a problem..."
"They reminded them who would suffer first."
Vanessa slowly backed away.
"You knew this?"
"I didn't know they were serious."
I looked directly at him.
"You gambled with our daughter's life."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I thought I could get out before..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
Daniel interrupted.
"We don't have time."
He pointed toward the staircase.
"Where's Lily?"
"Upstairs."
"Bedroom at the end of the hall."
Daniel motioned to two agents.
"Stay with her."
"They moved quickly."
Both disappeared upstairs.
I started after them.
Daniel stopped me.
"Wait."
He handed me a small communication earpiece.
"Old habit."
I smiled faintly.
"You remembered."
"I remember good operators."
I placed the earpiece in my ear.
The secure channel activated instantly.
Static.
Then voices.
"Alpha Team in position."
"Perimeter secure."
"Rear entrance covered."
Nora looked toward the windows.
"They know where this house is."
"They may already be watching."
Almost on cue...
One agent near the front window stiffened.
"I've got movement."
Everyone turned.
Across the street sat a dark gray sedan.
Engine running.
Tinted windows.
It hadn't been there five minutes earlier.
Daniel quietly approached the window.
"Can you identify the occupants?"
The agent lifted binoculars.
"Negative."
"Two people."
"Both wearing baseball caps."
The sedan remained perfectly still.
Waiting.
Watching.
Daniel spoke softly.
"Do not engage."
"Let's see what they do."
Thirty seconds passed.
Then one minute.
The sedan didn't move.
Neither did the people inside.
My instincts screamed.
They weren't neighbors.
They weren't reporters.
They were conducting surveillance.
Just like the photograph of Lily.
A sharp voice came through my earpiece.
"Second-floor team to command."
Daniel pressed his microphone.
"Go ahead."
"We've located Lily."
"She's safe."
Relief washed over me.
For exactly three seconds.
Then the same agent spoke again.
"Sir..."
"You need to hear this."
Daniel frowned.
"What is it?"
"We found something under her bed."
I didn't wait.
I sprinted toward the staircase.
Daniel followed.
Nora was right behind us.
Grant tried to come too.
An agent blocked his path.
"Stay downstairs."
We reached Lily's bedroom.
She sat on the edge of her bed holding Bunny.
Two agents were kneeling beside a small cardboard box.
One carefully lifted the lid.
Inside sat a brand-new stuffed rabbit.
Identical to Bunny.
Same white fur.
Same blue ribbon.
Same stitched smile.
Except this one carried a tiny red tag.
Daniel picked it up.
His expression changed instantly.
"It's too heavy."
The rabbit should have weighed only a few ounces.
Instead...
It felt solid.
The bomb technician, who had just entered the room, immediately held up a hand.
"No one touch it."
He scanned the toy with a handheld detector.
The screen flashed red.
Electronic components.
A transmitter.
Not explosives.
A tracking device.
Professional grade.
Military quality.
The technician carefully opened the stitching along the rabbit's back.
Hidden inside was a GPS beacon.
A miniature microphone.
And a cellular transmitter capable of broadcasting Lily's location in real time.
My heart sank.
Someone had hidden it in her bedroom.
Someone with access to the house.
Daniel slowly turned toward Grant.
"When did this get here?"
Grant looked genuinely stunned.
"I've never seen it."
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
"I didn't buy that."
"I swear."
Lily looked confused.
"I thought Daddy got me a new Bunny."
The room fell silent.
I knelt beside her.
"When did you get it, sweetheart?"
She thought for a moment.
"A man brought it."
"What man?"
"He wore a brown uniform."
"He said it was a gift."
My pulse quickened.
"What company was on the uniform?"
She frowned.
"I don't know."
"It was a bird."
Daniel and Nora exchanged a look.
I knew exactly what they were thinking.
Not a delivery company.
A disguise.
The same tactic trafficking organizations often used to gain access to homes.
The bomb technician carefully sealed the tracker inside an evidence container.
Before he could stand...
A radio transmission exploded through every agent's earpiece.
"Command!"
"We've lost visual on the gray sedan!"
Another voice immediately followed.
"Negative!"
"Vehicle now accelerating!"
A third transmission came just seconds later.
"They're heading straight toward the residence!"
Outside...
Tires screamed against the pavement.
Then came the deafening roar of an engine.
May you like
And before anyone inside the house could react...
A black armored SUV burst through the front gate at full speed.
