Chapter 4 – The Warrant

Chapter 4 – The Warrant
The knock echoed through the foyer.
Once.
Twice.
Then a third time.
No one inside the house spoke.
Grant stood frozen beside the front window.

His hand trembled against the curtain.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
"Tell them to go away."
Grant slowly turned toward her.
"It doesn't work like that."
Outside, another voice rang out.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation."
"We have a lawful search warrant."
"Open the door."
Special Agent Nora Briggs looked at Grant without a trace of emotion.
"You have five seconds."
Grant swallowed hard.
He took one slow step toward the entrance.
Then another.
Finally, he unlocked the door.
Three FBI agents entered first.
Behind them came two forensic specialists carrying black equipment cases.
A sixth agent remained outside, speaking quietly into a radio.
The lead agent displayed his credentials.
"Supervisory Special Agent Daniel Mercer."
He handed Grant a copy of the warrant.
"This authorizes the search of the residence, all electronic devices located on the property, and any records connected to Blackridge Logistics or its affiliated companies."
Grant scanned the first page.
His hands shook.
"There has to be a mistake."
Daniel remained calm.
"If there is, the investigation will show it."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You can't just walk into someone's home."
Daniel looked directly at her.
"We already have."
She immediately fell silent.
Two agents began photographing the living room.
Every broken vase.
Every overturned chair.
Every shattered wine glass.
The camera flashes illuminated the room one after another.
Click.
Click.
Click.
An evidence marker was placed beside the broken crystal decanter.
Another beside Lily's overturned coloring book.
A third beside a child's pink hair clip lying near the fireplace.
My stomach tightened.
Lily's favorite clip.
She had worn it almost every day before I left.
One forensic specialist carefully placed it into a clear evidence bag.
Grant noticed.
"Why are you taking that?"
The specialist answered without looking up.
"It may contain biological evidence."
Grant stared in disbelief.
"It's a hair clip."
"It belonged to a child."
"Exactly."
No one said another word.
Daniel turned toward me.
"Ms. Carter."
"Would you be willing to identify the surveillance system you installed?"
"Of course."
I led him through the house.
I pointed toward the decorative beam in the living room.
"The primary camera."
Then toward the grandfather clock.
"Secondary angle."
Finally, the hallway smoke detector.
"Audio pickup."
Daniel nodded with approval.
"Professional installation."
"It had to be."
He glanced at Nora.
"Your team did excellent work."
Grant looked ready to collapse.
"You've been recording us for months?"
"I've been protecting my daughter."
Vanessa suddenly exploded.
"This is all because of one little accident."
I turned toward her.
"One accident?"
I removed my phone.
I opened one of the archived recordings.
Without saying a word, I pressed play.
Lily's small voice filled the room.
"I'm sorry."
"I didn't mean to spill the juice."
Vanessa's voice answered immediately.
"You're sorry for everything."
"You ruin every room you walk into."
A loud slap echoed through the recording.
Several agents instinctively looked up.
Then Lily whimpered.
"I'll clean it."
Vanessa laughed.
"No."
"You're going to kneel."
The room became painfully quiet.
Grant slowly lowered his head.
The recording continued.
"Stay there until I say you can move."
Minutes passed.
Then Grant's voice entered the recording.
"Is she still crying?"
Vanessa answered.
"Ignore her."
"She'll stop eventually."
Grant chuckled.
"Good."
My heart ached all over again.
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Daniel looked directly at Grant.
"Do you recognize those voices?"
Grant whispered.
"...Yes."
"Are they authentic?"
He closed his eyes.
"...Yes."
Vanessa rushed toward him.
"Say something."
"Tell them I was joking."
Grant remained silent.
She grabbed his shoulders.
"Grant!"
He slowly pulled away from her.
For the first time since I had walked through the front door, he looked genuinely ashamed.
"I should've stopped it."
His voice barely carried across the room.
"I knew it was wrong."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You said discipline was necessary."
"I lied."
"You told me Lily was manipulating you."
"I lied."
"You said Evelyn cared more about her job than her family."
Grant's eyes filled with regret.
"I lied about a lot of things."
Vanessa stepped backward as though she no longer recognized him.
Daniel quietly nodded to another agent.
"Take possession of every electronic device."
The agents moved immediately.
Laptops.
Tablets.
External hard drives.
Desktop computers.
Even smart home hubs were disconnected and tagged.
One agent entered Grant's home office.
Less than a minute later, he called out.
"Sir."
"You need to see this."
Daniel walked inside.
Everyone followed.
Mounted on the wall behind Grant's desk hung an enormous framed certificate celebrating his promotion to equity partner.
It looked ordinary.
Until the agent carefully lifted the frame away from the wall.
Hidden behind it was a steel wall safe.
Daniel looked at Grant.
"Would you like to open it yourself?"
Grant's face turned ghostly white.
He didn't answer.
Daniel gave a small nod.
A forensic locksmith stepped forward with a portable decoding kit.
Within ninety seconds, the safe clicked open.
Inside were stacks of cash.
Three passports under different names.
A satellite phone.
And a black leather ledger stamped with a silver symbol.
Nora took one look at it.
Then her expression hardened.
"I know that emblem."
Daniel looked at her.
"So do I."
I stared at the symbol.
It matched the same insignia my task force had been hunting for during the final weeks of my classified mission.

The investigation I thought was ending...
Had just walked into my own living room.
