Chapter 12 – The Woman I Buried

Chapter 12 – The Woman I Buried

No one spoke.

The tablet remained frozen on the last frame.

My mother's face filled the screen.

The same soft smile.

The same green eyes.

The same small scar beneath her left eyebrow.

A scar she got when I was eight.

She had fallen while teaching me to ride a bicycle.

I remembered crying harder than she did.

I remembered her laughing.

"It's only a scratch, Evie."

No one else ever called me Evie.

Not after she died.

Daniel looked at me carefully.

"Evelyn."

"Is that really her?"

My throat felt dry.

"I don't know."

"But she looks exactly like my mother."

Grant stared at the screen.

"I met your mother once."

"At our wedding."

"So did I."

Nora replied quietly.

"I saw her photograph in your personnel file."

She looked back at the frozen image.

"If that's a fake..."

"It's the best one I've ever seen."

An evidence technician zoomed in on the woman's face.

Every detail was sharp.

No digital artifacts.

No obvious signs of manipulation.

Another technician checked the recording metadata.

"No edits."

"No frame replacement."

"This video is authentic."

My heartbeat echoed in my ears.

Authentic.

That meant someone who looked exactly like my mother had entered my home.

Taken Lily.

And spoken my name.

Daniel gently placed a hand on my shoulder.

"We need facts."

I nodded.

He was right.

Emotion could wait.

Evidence couldn't.

"Run facial recognition."

One technician immediately connected the image to the FBI database.

Another searched passport records.

Military records.

Driver's licenses.

International watchlists.

Nothing.

After nearly two minutes, the computer chimed.

MATCH FOUND

Everyone leaned closer.

The profile appeared on the screen.

Name: Margaret Carter

Status: Deceased

Date of Death: Fifteen years earlier

Confirmation: Dental Records Verified

Grant whispered,

"That's impossible."

The technician frowned.

"Wait."

He clicked another file.

A second record appeared beneath the first.

Restricted Access

Level Omega Clearance Required

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

He entered a secure authorization code.

ACCESS DENIED

Nora tried hers.

Again...

Denied.

Daniel slowly looked at me.

"You have higher clearance."

I hesitated.

Then entered my credentials.

The screen flashed.

ACCESS GRANTED

A classified file opened.

The room fell silent.

At the top of the page were words I never expected to read.

OPERATION PHOENIX

Below that...

Subject: Margaret Carter

Status: Protective Death Staging Successful

I stared at the screen.

Protective...

Death...

Staging.

My mother had never died.

She had been declared dead.

On purpose.

I scrolled farther.

Every page made less sense than the one before.

Former intelligence operative.

Deep-cover infiltration specialist.

Embedded within an international trafficking network.

Mission status...

Missing.

Last confirmed contact...

Fourteen years ago.

Nora slowly exhaled.

"My God..."

Daniel looked at me.

"Your mother was one of us."

I barely heard him.

My eyes were fixed on the final paragraph.

If Subject Carter reappears, assume operational compromise.

Do not attempt independent contact.

Consider all communications potentially coerced.

I stepped away from the tablet.

"No."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"My mother didn't kidnap Lily."

Grant looked confused.

"We all saw the video."

"I know what we saw."

"But I also know my mother."

"If she came herself..."

"She had a reason."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Or she's working with Victor."

I shook my head.

"Victor doesn't trust anyone."

"He uses people."

"He doesn't share power."

Nora looked thoughtful.

"Unless..."

She stopped.

"Unless what?"

"Unless Margaret isn't working for Victor."

"She's working against him."

The possibility hung in the air.

No one dismissed it.

Because it made just enough sense.

A radio transmission interrupted the silence.

"Command."

"This is Air One."

Daniel grabbed the microphone.

"Go ahead."

"We've completed thermal scans of Pier Seventeen."

"Warehouse is empty."

"What?"

"The tracker is still transmitting."

"But it's attached to an abandoned cargo container."

"A decoy."

Victor had fooled us again.

Daniel slammed a fist against the table.

"Damn it."

I looked back at the video.

Something suddenly caught my attention.

"Pause."

The technician froze the final frame.

I pointed toward the corner of the screen.

"There."

A reflection.

Tiny.

Barely visible.

Inside the bedroom mirror.

Someone else had been standing outside the window.

Watching.

The technician enhanced the image.

Pixel by pixel.

The reflection became clearer.

A tall man.

Broad shoulders.

Dark coat.

Silver cane.

Grant's breathing stopped.

"I know him."

Daniel turned sharply.

"Who is it?"

Grant swallowed.

"I only met him once."

"He never told me his real name."

"What did he call himself?"

Grant whispered two words.

"The Chairman."

The room became deathly quiet.

Nora slowly closed the laptop.

"I was hoping we'd never hear that name again."

I looked at her.

"You know who he is?"

She nodded.

"No one knows his identity."

"No one has ever photographed him."

"No one has ever arrested him."

She looked toward the frozen reflection.

"If that's really him..."

She paused.

"...then Victor Soren was never the head of the organization."

"He was only taking orders."

At that exact moment, Daniel's secure phone vibrated.

One encrypted message appeared on the screen.

IF YOU WANT LILY ALIVE... COME ALONE.

Beneath the message was a single set of GPS coordinates.

And I recognized them immediately.

May you like

The coordinates pointed to the abandoned military training facility...

Where my mother had taught me how to survive when I was twelve years old.
