Chapter 11 – The Empty Bedroom

Chapter 11 – The Empty Bedroom
Time stopped.
The radio slipped in my hand.
For a single heartbeat, I couldn't breathe.

Then instinct took over.
"I'm on my way."
I sprinted toward my SUV.
Daniel grabbed the passenger door before I could climb inside.
"I'm coming with you."
Nora jumped into the back seat.
Grant ran after us.
"Please!"
"Let me help!"
Daniel pointed toward another FBI vehicle.
"Ride with Agent Collins."
"Don't slow us down."
The engines roared to life.
Tires screamed across the pavement.
The convoy raced back toward the house.
Every second felt like an hour.
I gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white.
My mind replayed Lily's face.
Her smile.
Her laugh.
The promise I had made.
"I'm home."
"I'll protect you."
I had already failed once.
I wasn't going to fail again.
Three minutes later, we skidded into the driveway.
The house was surrounded by flashing red and blue lights.
Agents rushed in every direction.
Crime scene tape had already gone up around the east side of the property.
I jumped out before the SUV had fully stopped.
"Where is she?"
A young agent met me at the front door.
His face was pale.
"I'm sorry."
I pushed past him.
"No."
"Tell me exactly what happened."
We ran upstairs.
Lily's bedroom looked almost untouched.
Except for one thing.
The window.
It stood wide open.
The curtains fluttered in the cool night air.
Bunny lay on the carpet.
One ear had been torn.
I knelt beside the stuffed rabbit.
There was dirt on its fur.
Fresh dirt.
Whoever had taken Lily had stepped on it while climbing through the window.
Daniel examined the windowsill.
"No signs of forced entry."
The young agent swallowed hard.
"We never heard anything."
Nora frowned.
"How is that possible?"
Another agent answered from the hallway.
"We found this."
He held up a small silver cylinder.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
"Compressed aerosol."
The evidence technician nodded.
"Military-grade anesthetic."
"It was dispersed through the air-conditioning vent."
I looked toward the ceiling.
The vent sat directly above Lily's bed.
The realization made my blood run cold.
"The agents guarding her..."
The technician nodded.
"They inhaled it first."
Two paramedics wheeled one unconscious FBI agent past the bedroom door.
His pulse was stable.
But he still hadn't awakened.
Grant stood silently near the hallway.
He looked into Lily's room.
Then at Bunny.
His knees gave out.
He collapsed onto the floor.
"This is my fault."
No one argued.
Because it was.
Daniel continued searching the room.
A flashlight beam swept beneath the bed.
"There's something here."
He reached underneath.
His hand emerged holding a folded piece of paper.
Plain white.
My name written across the front.
EVELYN
I opened it carefully.
Only one sentence was written inside.
YOU CHOSE THE CASE OVER YOUR DAUGHTER AGAIN.
My chest tightened.
Victor.
It had to be Victor.
He wasn't just kidnapping Lily.
He was trying to destroy me.
Emotionally.
Psychologically.
Professionally.
Nora examined the handwriting.
"Printed."
"No fingerprints."
Daniel walked onto the balcony outside Lily's room.
His flashlight swept across the lawn.
"Tracks."
Several agents immediately climbed over the railing.
Within seconds one shouted,
"Vehicle impressions."
Another added,
"Black van."
"Left through the woods."
I joined them.
Fresh tire tracks cut across the grass.
They led toward the abandoned greenhouse.
The same escape route Victor had used.
He had planned everything.
The attack.
The explosion.
The distraction.
Even our response.
He knew we'd chase the tracker to the warehouse.
He wanted us away from Lily.
Daniel suddenly froze.
"Wait."
He pointed toward a nearby oak tree.
A tiny black object was attached to the bark.
An evidence technician carefully removed it.
A miniature camera.
Still recording.
Nora connected it to her tablet.
The final minutes of video began playing.
Everyone watched in silence.
The screen showed Lily's bedroom.
The agents standing guard.
Then...
A woman climbed through the window.
She wore black tactical clothing.
A breathing mask.
Night-vision goggles.
Her movements were flawless.
Professional.
She sprayed the room.
The agents collapsed within seconds.
She walked calmly to Lily's bed.
Lily opened her eyes.
Instead of screaming...
She smiled.
The room fell silent.
The woman removed her mask.
Only for a moment.
Just long enough for Lily to whisper one word.
"Grandma?"
Every person watching the video froze.
The woman smiled gently.
She picked Lily up.
Then looked directly into the hidden camera.
As if she had known it was there all along.
Before leaving through the window...
She spoke six words.
Slowly.
Clearly.
"So nice to see you again... Evelyn."
The screen went black.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Because I knew that face.
I had buried her fifteen years ago.
Or at least...
I thought I had.
May you like
The woman who had just taken my daughter...
Was my mother.
