Chapter 7: Marcus Tells the Truth

Rain continued to fall over the quiet lakeside cabin, drumming against the tin roof. A single lantern cast long shadows across the room as Eleanor Whitmore stared at the man she had believed was dead for three years.
Marcus Hale.
Her former financial advisor.
The man who had vanished without a trace after uncovering millions of dollars in suspicious financial transfers connected to the Whitmore Family Foundation.
Marcus pulled a chair beside the bed and carefully cut the restraints from Eleanor's wrists.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I couldn't risk you fighting me at the hospital."
Eleanor rubbed her sore wrists, never taking her eyes off him.
"You could have simply asked for my help."
Marcus gave a sad smile.
"No, I couldn't."
"Why not?"
"Because I didn't know who I could trust anymore."
He placed the brown leather folder on the table between them.
"I've spent three years collecting evidence."
Eleanor slowly opened the folder.
Inside were bank records, wire transfers, photographs, signed contracts, and copies of emails.
Her eyes widened.
"You found all of this?"
Marcus nodded.
"I found much more than financial fraud."
He slid another photograph across the table.
It showed Vivian meeting secretly with two unfamiliar men outside a warehouse late at night.
Another photograph followed.
Vivian handing over a briefcase.
Another.
Large crates being loaded into a shipping container owned by one of the Whitmore Foundation's overseas partners.
Eleanor looked up.
"This isn't just embezzlement."
"No."
Marcus's voice became grim.
"It's money laundering."
He pointed to several highlighted documents.
"The charity was being used to move illegal money through fake relief projects overseas."
Eleanor felt sick.
"And Vivian was behind it?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Not entirely."
"What do you mean?"
"Vivian isn't the mastermind."
Eleanor frowned.
"Then who is?"
Marcus was silent for several seconds.
Finally, he answered.
"I still don't know."
Across town, Detective Daniel Carter sat inside the incident command center that had been established at the Whitmore mansion.
Photographs covered an entire wall.
Vivian.
Marcus Hale.
Thomas Reed.
James.
Lily.
Financial records.
Security logs.
Hospital surveillance.
Every clue pointed in a different direction.
Officer Ramirez entered carrying a folder.
"We traced the white medical van."
Carter looked up.
"Where did it lead?"
"It was stolen yesterday."
"Of course it was."
"But..."
Ramirez continued.
"We recovered fingerprints from the steering wheel."
Carter stood immediately.
"Whose?"
"They belong to a man named Owen Briggs."
The detective searched his memory.
"I know that name."
Ramirez nodded.
"Former Army medic."
"What does he do now?"
"He works for a private security company."
"Which company?"
Ramirez handed him another file.
Carter's eyes narrowed.
"The same security company that installed the Whitmore mansion cameras."
Nathaniel hadn't slept.
He remained in his grandmother's library, reading every financial document Detective Carter had recovered.
Nothing made sense.
Vivian had always handled the Whitmore Foundation.
He trusted her completely.
If the accusations were true...
How had he missed it?
His thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock.
Lily stepped into the room, holding a worn stuffed rabbit.
"Uncle Nathaniel?"
He smiled gently.
"You should be asleep."
"I can't."
She walked over quietly.
"Are you mad at me?"
Nathaniel looked surprised.
"Why would I be?"
"Because I told everyone what I saw."
Nathaniel knelt beside her.
"Lily."
She looked down.
"I was scared."
"I know."
"What if Aunt Vivian hates me forever?"
Nathaniel wrapped his arms around her.
"You did the right thing."
Lily's voice became barely audible.
"I didn't tell you everything."
Nathaniel pulled back.
"What do you mean?"
She reached into her sweater pocket.
"I found this after Grandma fell."
She opened her small hand.
A gold cufflink rested in her palm.
Nathaniel frowned.
"It isn't mine."
"I know."
"I've never seen it before."
Lily nodded.
"I found it under the staircase."
Nathaniel turned the cufflink over.
Engraved on the back were two initials.
M.H.
His heart skipped a beat.
Marcus Hale.
At that same moment, miles away in the cabin, Marcus stood by the window, watching the rain.
Eleanor joined him.
"You left your cufflink."
Marcus's face changed instantly.
"What?"
She held up the matching cufflink still attached to his sleeve.
"The other one's missing."
Marcus searched his jacket frantically.
His expression darkened.
"No..."
"You dropped it."
"When?"
"The day you took me from the hospital."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"If Detective Carter finds it..."
"He'll think you attacked me."
Marcus nodded.
"And he'll stop looking for the real mastermind."
Before Eleanor could respond, Marcus's satellite phone vibrated.
He answered cautiously.
"This is Marcus."
A distorted electronic voice came through the speaker.
"I warned you not to interfere."
Marcus froze.
"You."
"I know where you are."
Marcus reached for his pistol.
The voice continued.
"You've always been good at finding evidence."
A pause.
"But you've never been very good at staying alive."
The call disconnected.
Marcus rushed to the window.
Far across the lake, barely visible through the rain and darkness...
A tiny red laser sight settled on the cabin window.
May you like
Someone had found them.
And they were already taking aim.
