Chapter 12: The Hidden Traitor

For a moment, no one in the foyer spoke.

Rainwater dripped from Marcus's jacket onto the polished marble floor. Eleanor, though exhausted and bruised, stood with remarkable strength beside him. Behind them, Special Agent Rebecca Mills held up her FBI credentials.

Detective Daniel Carter stepped forward first.

"You’re really with the FBI?"

Rebecca handed him her badge.

"You can verify the serial number."

Carter examined it carefully before nodding.

"It's authentic."

Nathaniel rushed to his grandmother.

"Grandma!"

He wrapped his arms around Eleanor, relief washing over his face.

"I thought I'd lost you."

Eleanor gently held his face.

"I'm still here."

She glanced toward Vivian, who stood frozen near the staircase.

"And now it's time for the truth."

Rebecca Mills turned to Marcus.

"Did anyone follow you?"

Marcus shook his head.

"We lost them after the tunnel collapsed."

"The tunnel collapsed?"

Marcus nodded.

"Someone detonated explosives to destroy the evidence."

Rebecca wasn't surprised.

"That's exactly what we expected."

Nathaniel frowned.

"You knew about the tunnels?"

"For almost a year."

She opened a slim briefcase and spread several classified photographs across the dining table.

Satellite images.

Shipping manifests.

Bank records.

Maps.

"The FBI has been investigating an international criminal organization that launders money through charitable foundations."

Nathaniel stared at the documents.

"The Whitmore Foundation..."

"...was only one of several organizations they infiltrated."

Vivian listened in silence.

Every word tightened the knot in her stomach.

She had stolen money.

She had pushed Eleanor.

But she had never known about international weapons smuggling.

Someone had been using her crimes to hide even larger ones.

Rebecca continued.

"The organization has operated for nearly fifteen years."

Marcus added quietly,

"They recruit people with financial access."

"Like Vivian."

Rebecca nodded.

"Exactly."

Nathaniel looked at his wife.

"Did you know?"

Vivian's voice trembled.

"I thought..."

She stopped.

"What?"

"I thought I was only moving money between accounts."

Marcus stared at her.

"You never questioned where it came from?"

"I didn't want to."

Her shoulders slumped.

"I told myself everyone in wealthy families played financial games."

Nathaniel looked at her with disbelief.

"You stole from my grandmother."

Tears filled Vivian's eyes.

"Yes."

"You tried to kill her."

Vivian lowered her head.

"...Yes."

"But I never wanted this."

She gestured toward the FBI files.

"I didn't know they were using the foundation to move weapons."

Rebecca watched her carefully.

"For once..."

"I believe you."

Detective Carter folded his arms.

"So Vivian isn't the mastermind."

"No," Rebecca replied.

"But she's guilty of attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."

Two uniformed officers stepped forward.

Vivian didn't resist.

She simply held out her hands.

The handcuffs clicked into place.

Nathaniel watched silently.

There had been a time when he imagined growing old with her.

Now she couldn't even meet his eyes.

As officers escorted her toward the front door, she suddenly stopped.

"There’s something you need to know."

Rebecca looked at her.

"What?"

Vivian turned toward Eleanor.

"The person running everything..."

"...has access to every room in this house."

James frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Vivian slowly looked around the foyer.

"They've been inside this mansion for years."

Nathaniel's heart began to race.

"Who?"

Vivian shook her head.

"I don't know their name."

"But I know one thing."

Everyone waited.

"They always wore gloves."

Just then, Special Agent Mills' phone vibrated.

She answered immediately.

After only a few seconds, her expression changed.

"Repeat that."

Silence.

Then she ended the call.

"What happened?" Carter asked.

Rebecca looked around the room.

"Our cyber team just decrypted one of the servers Ryan was using."

"And?"

"They traced every encrypted message."

Marcus stepped closer.

"To whom?"

Rebecca's voice became almost a whisper.

"The messages didn't come from another country."

Nathaniel frowned.

"They came from here?"

She nodded slowly.

"They originated..."

"...inside the Whitmore mansion."

A heavy silence settled over everyone.

Someone inside the estate had been sending orders to Ryan for years.

Rebecca looked toward Carter.

"We need to search every room."

The FBI agents immediately spread throughout the mansion.

One team searched the offices.

Another searched the basement.

A third inspected the attic.

Forty minutes passed.

Nothing.

Then an agent called over the radio.

"Agent Mills!"

She grabbed her radio.

"Go ahead."

"We found something."

"Where?"

"The servants' quarters."

James looked stunned.

"My quarters?"

The team hurried upstairs.

Inside James' modest room, everything appeared ordinary.

A neatly made bed.

Old books.

Family photographs.

Simple furniture.

Rebecca carefully examined the room.

Nothing.

Then Carter noticed one loose floorboard beneath the bed.

He knelt and lifted it.

Everyone held their breath.

Inside the hidden compartment...

...was a sophisticated encrypted satellite transmitter.

Alongside it lay dozens of disposable encrypted phones.

James stared in complete disbelief.

"I've never seen those before."

Rebecca slowly looked at him.

"Maybe you haven't."

"But someone wanted us to."

Marcus's expression darkened.

"A planted evidence cache."

Rebecca nodded.

"They're trying to frame James."

Before anyone could respond, the mansion's security alarm suddenly blared.

Every light flashed red.

An electronic voice echoed through the house.

Security lockdown activated.

All doors automatically slammed shut.

Every window sealed with reinforced steel shutters.

The Whitmore mansion had become a prison.

Then the home's intercom crackled to life.

A calm, distorted voice filled every room.

"Good evening, everyone."

Marcus froze.

Ryan had played recordings of that voice for years.

It was unmistakable.

The mastermind.

May you like

After fifteen years...

...they were finally speaking directly.
