Chapter 5: The Intruder

The sound of breaking glass echoed through the mansion like a gunshot.

For a split second, no one moved.

Then emergency lights flickered on, bathing the grand foyer in a dim red glow.

"Nobody leave this room!" Detective Daniel Carter ordered.

Two officers immediately drew their weapons.

Another rushed to the electrical panel while Eric Sloan, the security technician, struggled to keep his laptop powered by its backup battery.

Nathaniel's pulse raced.

"What was that?"

James looked toward the west wing.

"It came from the study."

Carter pointed at two officers.

"With me."

The three men hurried down the dark hallway, their flashlights slicing through the darkness. The beam from Carter's light landed on shattered glass scattered across the polished hardwood floor.

A window had been smashed from the inside.

Cold rain blew through the opening.

But something was wrong.

The mud beneath the window was untouched.

"No footprints," one officer observed.

Carter nodded.

"Our intruder didn't come in."

"He went out."

Back in the foyer, Vivian stood surrounded by two officers.

Although her hands trembled, her mind raced even faster.

Someone else knows about the folder.

It wasn't possible.

She had never told anyone.

Unless...

Her eyes widened.

Marcus.

Three years earlier, Marcus Hale had worked as Eleanor Whitmore's personal financial advisor before quietly disappearing after questioning several suspicious transfers. Vivian had believed he had simply accepted a payoff and vanished.

What if he hadn't?

What if he had been watching all along?

Meanwhile, Detective Carter entered the study.

Books covered the floor.

Desk drawers had been ripped open.

Picture frames lay shattered.

Someone had searched the room in a hurry.

One officer pointed toward the fireplace.

"Detective."

Carter walked over.

Inside the ashes was the burned corner of a brown leather folder.

His expression hardened.

The folder.

Someone had tried to destroy it.

Using gloved hands, Carter carefully lifted the charred fragment into an evidence bag.

Only a few words remained visible.

Whitmore Family Foundation

And beneath it...

Transfer Authorization

Nathaniel stared at the burned paper.

"My grandmother's charity records."

James nodded grimly.

"She was reviewing those this morning."

"But someone interrupted her," Carter said.

The mansion's electricity returned moments later.

Eric Sloan hurried into the study carrying his laptop.

"Detective."

"What is it?"

"I found something."

He opened the recovered security archive.

"The main recordings were deleted..."

"...but whoever erased them forgot about the motion logs."

"What do they show?"

Eric enlarged a digital floor plan of the estate.

Small blue dots marked every motion sensor activation.

Nathaniel leaned closer.

"I don't understand."

Eric pointed to the timeline.

"At 4:06 PM, only Mrs. Eleanor and Vivian were on the staircase."

He moved to another timestamp.

"At 4:08 PM, Eleanor falls."

Another.

"At 4:10 PM..."

Everyone leaned in.

"...someone enters the study."

Nathaniel frowned.

"Who?"

Eric shook his head.

"The cameras were deleted, but the motion sensor recorded the movement."

He clicked again.

"At 4:12 PM, the security server was accessed."

Another click.

"At 4:13 PM..."

Silence filled the room.

"...a second person entered the mansion through the service hallway."

Nathaniel looked confused.

"There was someone else here?"

"Yes."

Detective Carter's eyes narrowed.

"And that person never checked in with security."

James suddenly cleared his throat.

"There is one person who still has access to the service entrance."

Everyone turned toward him.

"Who?"

"The grounds manager."

"What's his name?"

"Thomas Reed."

Nathaniel frowned.

"He resigned six months ago."

James nodded slowly.

"He resigned..."

"...but Mrs. Eleanor never changed his security access."

An officer hurried into the room.

"Detective."

"What is it?"

"We found a vehicle leaving the estate on one of the exterior cameras."

"Can you identify it?"

The officer handed him a tablet.

The grainy image showed a dark SUV speeding through the rear gate.

Its license plate was partially visible.

Carter zoomed in.

Only four characters could be read.

7K19

"Run every black SUV matching those numbers," he instructed.

"Yes, Detective."

Across the room, Vivian lowered her eyes.

She recognized that SUV immediately.

Marcus Hale drove a black SUV.

Had he broken into the mansion?

Had he taken the folder?

Or...

Had Eleanor given it to him before confronting Vivian?

For the first time that evening, Vivian realized the truth.

She wasn't the only person hiding secrets.

Someone else had been preparing for this day.

Just then, Nathaniel's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed the hospital.

He answered immediately.

"This is Nathaniel."

A frightened nurse spoke on the other end.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

His stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

"There was an incident."

Nathaniel's voice dropped.

"My grandmother..."

The nurse interrupted him.

"Mrs. Whitmore is alive."

He exhaled in relief.

"But when officers went to check on her room..."

She hesitated.

"...they found her bed empty."

Nathaniel's face turned pale.

"What do you mean empty?"

The nurse's voice shook.

"Someone took your grandmother."

The call ended.

A stunned silence settled over the room.

Detective Carter slowly looked at Vivian.

Then at the burned folder.

Then back at Nathaniel.

This was no longer an attempted murder investigation.

It had just become a kidnapping.
